As reported earlier, Penn State head coach Joe Paterno is currently not honoring the scholarship release request of freshman quarterback Rob Bolden. Paterno already lost quarterback Kevin Newsome to transfer earlier this season, and he couldn't have enjoyed seeing putative 2011 starter (and former walk-on) Matt McGloin struggle against Florida in the Outback Bowl last weekend.

Nonetheless, "I won't have enough quarterbacks if you leave" isn't going to placate a kid who wants to transfer, and Bolden and his family have been unusually open to the press while they've dealt with the matter. To that end, the Altoona Mirror spoke to Bolden on the phone tonight, and here's an excerpt from the interview:

Q: How disappointed are you that Joe denied the scholarship release?:

A: I'm pretty upset. I didn't understand why he would want me to stay if I didn't want to be there. I was looking to get out and get a release, but he thinks otherwise.

Q: What is your plan now? Are you coming back to PSU for school?:

A: I'm not sure yet. If I can figure out a way to get out of there with the release or whatever before Monday, then I'll do that. But if not, then we'll see what happens.

Q: If Joe does not release you, do you plan to come back?:

A: We'll see what happens. I'm not sure yet.

Bolden also mentions that "pretty much all" of his teammates have voiced their sympathy and support to him, so assuming that's true, JoePa's not doing much to get his locker room on his side. That's never a recipe for success, so Paterno needs to think carefully about how he's handling this situation.

Bolden has an agreement with Penn State until June.  There is no reason Paterno should let him out of his obligation.

Add to this his mother stated she was "happy" that Paterno denied the trasnfer request because she believes that Paterno (unlike his idiot of a father) actually is trying to do what is best for the kid.  By all accounts this is all the work of the father.  Read the quotes--it's not Rob that's truly upset--it's his daddy.

Nathan Stupar (Penn State LB) is on record as saying that Bolden has made it clear that it's his father's decision for him to leave--not his.  So, the kid doesn't WANT to leave as you're assuming.  You're also taking "daddy's word" on what Paterno said--he's less than credible.

Also, stop acting like this is the first time a HC ever denied a request to leave.  It's done every year by virtually every HC.

PSU QB Rob Bolden speaks: 'I'm pretty upset'

As a football alumni, this little kid can stick the scholarship where the sun does not shine.  I would not want this little whine baby in my huddle.  I was not sunshine and roses my first two season and switch positions.  I moved to defense and continued to enjoy my times.  Not only did I see the field more, I earned a great deal of respect from my coaches and teammates for sticking with them without complaining.

Every situation is different, but geez the world is not handed to him on a silver platter in a gold house.  Sometimes you have to test your mettle through the worst of times and comeback even a stronger individual.

Read between the lines.  The Bolden's parents are not together.  The father has been very vocal about his son transferring.  The mom on the other hand has been quoted saying that she wants her son to stay and that she supports Coach Paterno.  Read between the lines.  Joe has always looked out for the best interest of the kids.  If Bolden stays he will have a very good chance of winning back his job.  Bolden should have a talk w/ Michael Robinson.  If anyone had a reason to transfer it was him.  But he stuck out it out and his senior year he was a Big Ten and Orange bowl champion.

What's wrong with the old man?

Sorry JoePa but if the kid wants to leave let him leave. So you're not gonna have enough quarterbacks for next year go out and recruit enough one for God's sake!

Equating a college scholarship with all that it entails with the institution of slavery is cliche and, to put it bluntly, demonstrative of historical ignorance or worse, misrepresentation. Furthermore, the not so veiled implication of the link between a young African-American athlete and a white coach in this case is despicable. You don't have to like Joe Paterno, that's fine, but the equation doesn't add up. Just ask the scores of African-American athletes who have come through the Penn State program and see if the believe Coach paterno is "slavemaster" you suggest. The facts are that the kid had an opportunity and in the opinion of those who make the decisions, his play didn't measure up to what was believed was needed. Now the player wants to leave and go somehwere else. I have another suggestion. Stay, honor the commitment you made to the Penn State football program in exchange for a first-class education which if utilized will provide you with a lifetime of opportunities and work hard to win back your starting position after you have had an entire Spring and Summer to do so. But let's get beyond the slavery analogies because they are vacuous and historically bankrupt.

"Ole Abe issued the prolamation some time back."

The Emancipation Proclamation only outlawed slavery in nations/states at war with the US, not technically in the US all together.  The 14th amendmant did that

Let the kid go, it just shows how petty the old man is. Paterno is a piece of excrement.
