In the latest headline of what's been a solid week of scandal in college football, reports broke last night that now-notorious trainer/scout Will Lyles -- already under investigation for receiving a $25,000 payment from Oregon for his services -- had told assistant coach Van Malone of Texas A&M that the Aggies would need to "beat" $80,000 if they wanted a commitment from eventual LSU All-American Patrick Peterson, then one of the country's hottest high school prospects.

Today, Peterson responded to those allegations by speaking to a Baton Rouge radio station , calling them "baloney" and claiming that he had never even visited Texas A&M. "Why would I jeopardize my future over going to Texas A&M and $80,000 when I knew that my future was playing football," Peterson reportedly said.

There are two problems with these denials, though. First, no one has publicly accused Peterson of asking for any amount of money, much less accepting any; Malone's statements refer to Lyles and Lyles alone, and in the report Peterson's father (while calling businesses like Lyles' "escort services") specifically denies the family having ever requesting money in exchange for Peterson's signature. Peterson appears to responding to implications drawn from the report rather than the report itself, which doesn't claim he had done anything wrong.

Second, Peterson almost certainly did visit College Station; this Rivals article offer multiple details on Peterson's surprise visit (from the days he was using the last name Johnson) and his father himself said Peterson had enjoyed a "good visit" to A&M (one that included meeting up with Malone).

Neither of those issues mean that Peterson's denials aren't perfectly valid; the only real thing they probably indicate is that the interview was more off-the-cuff than carefully planned out.

But it also shows that it's an issue that Peterson and his family are taking seriously, and that despite his and his father's responses, it's one we haven't heard the last of yet by a long shot.

UPDATE: LSU has released an official statement from Peterson, which reads:
“I have never had any type of relationship with Willie Lyles and he had no influence on my decision to attend LSU, or any other school for that matter. He had no involvement with my recruiting process and I resent the fact that my name has come up in these allegations. I chose LSU because it’s a great school with a great football program. I never received nor was I offered anything to go to LSU and anyone saying otherwise is being dishonest.”
Unlike Peterson's previous statements on the radio, there's nothing much confusing or contradictory about that. Assuming Peterson is being truthful, expect the NCAA's microscope to focus even more intensely on Lyles than it already is.

Peterson calls pay-for-play allegations 'baloney'

Seriously people, lets get real, its the SEC!!!  They all pay their players down there and they also take players who cant read.
Katzenmoyer, who can't read, is Big 10.  What is funnier than a Big 10 complaining about other conferences cheating?  That's like OJ Simpson complaining about murder lol.

patrick peterson was one of two players scoring in single digits on his wonderlic.
florida OT carl johnson produced the worst score among this draft class registering a 6.
that pretty much says it all.

patrick peterson is dumb.    he was covering his a$$ on his supposed "no clue" on any of the knowings of texas a&m or the agent. its one thing to act stupid in his denials. but hes both.

He isn't dumb enough to let his "coaches" juice him up with God knows to the point where he almost dies - that stupidity is reserved for the Iowa Cheateyes.  I can't believe that Iowa is allowed to still even play football after almost killing half their team.  Yikes.  Iowa = no concern for player safety, rules, or common decency.  Petersoon may be dumb, but he isn;t dumb enough to play for Iowa.

Didn't you make this remark in the paragraph before the one above?  "Today, Peterson responded to those allegations by speaking to a Baton Rouge radio station"? How can you say no one's publicly accused him if he's "responding to allegations", your words?  Every LSU hater on this site will be claiming he took $80,000.

Peterson appears to responding to implications drawn from the report rather than the report itself, which doesn't claim he had done anything wrong
Why do you suppose anyone would expect Lyles to make such a comment to a Texas A&M assistant, if he did, without specific knowledge?  He did collect $25,000 from Oregon, didn't he?  Peterson has every right to respond to these remarks because, as you should know, implication is a basic method politicians and propaganda outfits, such as CBS and the press use to make people believe things that arent true.

"Why would I jeopardize my future over going to Texas A&M and $80,000 when I knew that my future was playing football," Peterson reportedly said.

bad english (grammar) maybe  but I "hear this as "why would I go to Texas A&M for $80,000, when my future is pro football and I will make millions?"
It's as simple as that. This POS writer jumps from that to Peterson saying "he never went"?? How? He is saying he wouldn't wreck his future to go to A&M for $80k, when he knows he's gonna make millions. It really isn't that difficult.

Then the ESPN local reporter asked point blank "you saying you never went to Texas A&M?"

He then said he visited the school.
Why didn't this garbage hack of a writer, who has horrible grammar, not mention this part?? Oh, because he wouldn't have anything to write about.
And any of you Buckeyes fans trying to compare this to Tressel are fools. Sweater came out and admitted it and more is being found out everyday. So far, there is only speculation and rumor, and Peterson adamantly denied any wrongdoing.

Before you crucify this kid or the LSU Tigers, wait to see if it is real.

"It is better to be silent and thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt." Nice quote. I'll have to remember that!

Peterson calls pay-for-play allegations 'baloney'

ah the morning after and reality....

1st-  The ESPN / local BR radio guy did a telephone interview
2nd- Peterson never said "I didn't go to aTm"
3rd- Peterson did say "I never took an 'official visit' to aTm"

so get the facts straight

an Official visit and a visit are 2 different things according to NCAA rule
Peterson was being NCAA correct in describing his visit

++++

I have heard people say this kid is dumb...

what???

he said yesterday

"why would I go to aTm for $80,000, when I can go to LSU and play for 1 of the finest schools and turn pro in 3 years and make millions!"

does that sound like a dummy??

++++

I heard somebody say Peterson was a Miami recruit before actually heading to LSU and questioning that.

listen to this...

Peterson said,  "yeah I could play for any ACC school and I looked at Big 12 schools, but at LSU I could play against the best and be ready for next step"

"pat, when did you know you would sign with LSU?"

"Man I was there when Matt threw the ball to beat Auburn.  That place erupted and I swear the stadium moved.  I just knew right then."

It looks like OSU fans have been mentoring LSU fans on how to whine about everything and to keep your head in the sand.
