Arizona St., Wazzu get new looks

Last Friday we mentioned that Arizona State was prepping for the unveiling of a new set of uniforms. As it turns out, what Nike cooked up for the Sun Devils wasn't only a new look but an entire "re-branding" of the entire athletic department. Behold:

Our first question: has Nike found a way to make the uniforms smoke like that even when they're on the field? Some sort of tiny dry ice machine hidden in the shoulder pads? Because, dude, that would be intimidating.

And isn't that intimidation sort of the point of this overhaul? You'll notice that when it comes to the helmet logo, "Sparky" -- the mischievous devil who's adorned ASU helmets since 1980 -- has been exiled to a sticker on the rear of the helmet, with only a souped-up version of his pitchfork remaining. It's a bit of a shame, really; charming cartoons and decades of tradition are out, Jerry Glanville- esque monoblack alternates are in. (And about the logo, guys, Maserati called ... )

Then again, those new road whites do look pretty sweet, and the home look isn't bad if the Sun Devils keep the gold pants and stay away from the corporate-looking mono-red.

But nonetheless, our choice for the best new uniform of the week belongs to Washington State, who also picked this week to unveil a set of new Nike-designed looks. Check out the new gray alternates, complete with all-gray helmet:

It's the little tocuhes -- the crimson Pac-12 logo, the gray Wazzu helmet logo -- that make this intriguing. (You can see the standard home-and-away uniforms here, which have both been more tweaked than overhauled.) Now if Phil Knight and Co. would get rid of the Oregon number font that looks like 2004's idea of numbers from the year 2034, we'll really be in business.

You can tell which school really spent money and hired a good firm to assist them with this process simply by the pormotional pics above.  ASU - they publish publicity photos and send them to all of the media outlets.  WSU - they have a gathering at a local hotel and when the media asks for a photo to include in their stories, they get some kid to pose in front of the press conference table and "smile real big for the camera now".  Of course it took 3 or 4 takes b/c people kept walking back and forth behind the player.  In fact, you can see someone's arm on the left.  Didn't even splurge on the photoshop license.

Oh, and by the way, the school that spent more got better unis too.  WSU - gray on gray - huh?

While there are a couple of good teams, as a conference, the Pac 10, now Pac 12, sucks in football.  New uniforms are just a distraction from the lousy play on the field.

I agree that the gray logo on the gray helmet for WSU does not look every good. But I have to say that I really like the whole look for ASU. I think their uniforms look different and stand out

I think the new Washington State helmet looks stupid.  You have a grey helmet with a grey logo which means that if you aren't within 10-15 yards of the person wearing the helmet you aren't going to even notice the logo on the side of it.

So, to the author of this article . . . I completely disagree with what you would call "sweet".

Also, the Oregon number font is what you would call . . . "sweet" . . .  at least to me it is.  But hey, this is afterall an opinion column and not a sports story so . . . there's my opinion.

I think Nebraska should be included with Bama and Penn State for classic simple looks as well.

Alabama and Penn State ... simply the best; both in style and tradition on and off the field.

I have no idea who Washington State is trying to fool.  Maybe they think that if they come to a game dressed as the Confederate Army, they can play like some of the teams from the South do.  The good news is that they can.  The bad news is that the teams they will be p-laying like are Vanderbilt and Wake Forest.

Arizona State's uniforms are O.K, but this business about "rebranding" the entire athletic department has to be some kind of joke.  If ASU fails to qualify for a bowl game again, Dennis Erickson will be looking for a new job, and ASU a new Head coach.  That is the "rebranding" that ASU should be concerned with.

I'll take the two uniforms individually:

First Arizona State. I like the pitchfork logo on the helmet, but it would have been better if the handle wrapped around the helmet a-la the Florida State spear. The way it is now, the handle is just too dinky. The red and white uniforms are nice. I just wish that instead of the ASU on the sleeve, they would put TV numbers. I'd also like to see an updated Sparky logo on the hip. The ASU website doesn't feature the old Sparky logo at all. I do know that it is on the back of the helmets as a small decal. One thing I absolutely HATE is the black. ASU's colors are burgundy and gold, NOT black. Stick to your team colors, please. Overall, though, I'd say the ASU uniforms are above-average.

The WSU uniforms are very good. There are a handful things I'd change. I don't like the two shades of gray. I also don't like the charcoal pants. Make 'em crimson or white. I also don't like the gray helmets with the dark gray facemask. That just looks tacky. Speaking of helmets, I really can't stand the third helmet: the gray with the chrome-ish WSU logo. Those are really nit-picky things with it, but the uniforms overall are fantastic.
