Northwestern wants to keep playing at Wrigley

The game played between Northwestern and Illinois at Wrigley Field last November was panned critically, and for good reason. Due to a lack of space behind the east zone, the game was played with the offense continually moving towards the west end zone where there was more space between the back of the end zone and a brick wall. Which made the game an easy target of jokes, but the fact is, the game was quite successful for Northwestern both in the financial sense and in a marketing sense.

So much so that according to a report in the Chicago Tribune this weekend, Northwestern would like to make its date at Wrigley Field an annual affair.

The Nov. 20 game was such a financial and marketing success that Cubs and Northwestern officials have talked about putting an annual Wrigley Field game on the calendar, sources told the Tribune.

But that won't happen until the Cubs renovate their ballpark. Once it secures funding, the team hopes to create space for a regulation 100-yard field by manipulating walls in at least one dugout area.

I was at the game in November, and while only one end zone being in play took a few minutes to get used to, it did not really hinder the game. The fact was that the atmosphere of the game at Wrigley easily surpassed any atmosphere you'll come across at Northwestern's Dyche Stadium in Evanston. The biggest difference being that the stands were packed, which just doesn't happen at Northwestern home games in Evanston. I said following the game that I'd like to see more football played at Wrigley Field, and that opinion still stands today.

If a way to include both end zones can be found, even better.

If Wrigley can succesfully host a game using both end zones, I think ND would be hosting their own games there. Maybe even anually. Though I would hate to see hallowed Wrigley tainted by the presence of So Cal Trojans.

I personally think that seeing Northwestern play Notre Dame at Wrigley would be a cool experience.  Find a way to make that happen.  There is a big ND fan base in Chicago anyways.  I bet that would sell out faster than you could print the tickets.

Wow, Tom. "Dyche Stadium?" Really? It's been Ryan Field since 1997.

Here's a better idea: If Northwestern wants to play a game on a neutral field, USE SOLDIER FIELD! USE A FRICKIN STADIUM THAT WAS ACTUALLY DESIGNED FOR FRICKIN FOOTBALL!

Northwestern wants to keep playing at Wrigley

I for one loved the game.  Who cares if both teams go the same way.  Then one team can't whine that the wind was worse in the 4th quarter going north than it was in the 3rd quarter going the same way. Its a spectacular venue for baseball and football.  Besides, its college football and a field like that fits the charm of college football.

Whatt?!?!  Who will be responsible for shrinking down the field size so that the game isn't one way again?  It's a poor idea!!  Just like Chicago hosting the 2016 Olympics (without any real facilities) was a bad idea!!  Please, keep playing in Evanston!

Northwestern wants to keep playing at Wrigley

For all the people bad mouthing Northwestern ....the Cats have put quality football teams on the field for most part for years now and they have true student athletes,I think it is pretty neat that they play a game at the old ball park and it looks as though the fans that attended had a good time...isn't that what it is all about? It's nice to see teams like Northwestern have high academics and still compete.

Northwestern wants to keep playing at Wrigley

At least Northwestern is putting the game where their loyal fans can easily attend, unlike the a$$hole at my beloved 'Cuse who is putting the cream of the home games at the new Meadowlands.

I was at that game, and I would say it was 70/30 NU fans. Love the fact that you guys love to travel to the big city, since there isn't a whole lot to do back home other than tend to the pigs, but facts are facts. But other than quibbling about crowds, when are you guys actually going to win a big game?  Looks like the Cats own you

I'd like to make one factual correction to your comment. I was at the Iowa vs. NW game at NW and there is no chance you could get away with saying there were more NW fans than Iowa fans at the game. In fact, I would say it was 70/30 Iowa fans. Sadly, it was NW's Senior Day which makes things even more laughable. Will NW ever actually have a home field advantage?
