Attorney: Harvey Updyke attacked after hearing

The sordid tale of Harvey Updyke, the Alabama enthusiast currently accused of poisoning the Toomer's Corner oak trees at Auburn, has taken a rather disturbing turn. According to Glennon Threatt, Updyke's attorney, Updyke was attacked behind a nearby gas station after his hearing today, and he was briefly hospitalized with a head injury.

According to al.com, Updyke received a split brow, facial bruises, and a possible concussion; there's also some concern that Updyke may have lost consciousness at some point. Threatt announced the attack on Paul Finebaum's radio show shortly after it occurred, and if that sounds odd, let's keep in mind that Updyke is only facing trial because he himself confessed to the poisoning on Finebaum's show back in January.

Details on the attack are still thin; there's no video of the attack, much less a suspect or a name or anything, but Jay Tate of the Montgomery Advertiser is confirming that the attack did occur, and that Updyke is currently meeting with the Opelika Police Department.

It's a shame, but not a surprise, that a rivalry so inflamed with passion and consequence has turned so, so ugly. Neither Updyke's alleged poisoning of the oaks nor his subsequent attack have any place in American society, much less the day-to-day travails of college fandom. It's infantile savagery, the type of loutish behavior that debases the entire state of Alabama in one fell swoop. The choice is clear: Alabama and Auburn fans must either grow up or resign themselves to being the hysterical, bloodthirsty manbabies of college football.

Hey Dereckloss; are you kidding me? All of what I've heard is the American public poking fun @ the gang-influenced crowd in Chavez Ravine. By the way fool; MLB has stepped in.

I read on ESPN that Updyke has two kids.  One is named Crimson Tyde and the other's name is Bear.  The guy was a diehard.

It reminds me of the Okie that tore off the Longhorn fans sack a couple years back.  Neither of them went to college either.

That "Okie" didn't rip off that guy's nutsack because that guy was a "Longhorn".   That Okie was an old man who was being brutally assaulted by a much younger and more physically fit thug who also happened to be a Longhorn fan.   It was self defense but the media played it up as some football rivalry that got to the point of some person ripping off a dude's nutz for the sole purpose of him being a Texas fan.   I guess the ball rip made for a much more tantalizing article than the real truth of the situation.

As far as this tree killing looney tune goes, its not an Alabama thing anymore than it is just a normal idiot on the loose thing.

The one question that comes to mind for me in this latest event is, what the hell is he doing behind the gas station in the first place?

Of course not everyone in Alabama is crazy, but you have to admit that more stories of deaths, beatings, and general lunacy resulting from football loyalties come out of the state than any other.  Again, just because it happens more often in Alabama (and it does, you know that to be true) does not make everyone crazy.  Having a larger, albeit still small piece of the whole, crazy section is just the way it is.  Look at how many from both schools justify cheating (Newton, Bama replay booth officials, etc.), and the number of major infractions each school has, etc.  Winning comes first, everything else is secondary.

The story forgot to include the other detritus of Bammy' with the scene. A pickup truck, Pabst Blue Ribbon beer, Lynard Skynard, NASCAR, a mobile home, and a Klan outfit.
Are you describing Alabama or the Republican Party?

I wish the story of him getting a beating was true.  I want to believe it.  He deserves a beatting every day and twice on Sunday for what he did.  I just can't belive Updyke.

I'm not an Auburn or SEC fan.  In fact I'm a Texas Aggie fan (Insert Jokes Here).  Pranks between schools have a long tradition, but this is crazy when someone destroys landmarks from a rival team.  Steal a mascot hold it for a couple of days and release it.  Thats fine. A while back the Rice Owls blew whistles to disrupt the Aggie band.  Now that was funny, I don't care who you are.

Its a game and yes I hate it when the Aggies loose to the longhorns, but noone I know is going to destroy part of the t.u. campus or kill Bevo.  How can anyone be so wrapped up in a college team that they didn't even attend that college?

The scariest thing about this Updyle character is that he ISN'T some fringe loon; he much closer to the Alabama fanbase mainstream than many realize.  Remember when that young man who had the integrity to turn Bama in for cheating was BOOED at graduation?  I'm not picking on Bama as many other schools have crazies as well, its just that Bama seems to have more of them.  All in all, Alabama is a very violent place.

I'd never wish a beating on someone, but if Updyke got slapped around for bragging how he vandalized the Auburn trees, he has no one but himself to blame, and he got what he so richly deserved. Let's just say I won't be sending him flowers and a get well card.

It's all a hoax. This man is obviously mental to do the things he has done. Sadly it has made it seem that everyone from Bama is this way. The only reason it's national news is because Bama and Auburn are your last two NC winners.

If no one cared, it would only be side news, like the guys who attacked that dad out at the Dodger-Giants game. But no one makes fun of people from Cali for that...
