Vontaze Burfict's brand of leadership

To a man, all of us here at the Eye On College Football blog had a bit of a chuckle when we came across a headline we saw in the Arizona Republic on Friday morning. That headline was "ASU's Vontaze Burfict embracing leadership role." Don't get us wrong, it's not as if any of us don't think Burfict is a very good football player; we know he is. It was just, given his penchant for personal foul penalties, we wondered if having Burfict as your defensive leader on the field is really the smartest decision for Arizona State to make.

I mean, is this really the kind of example you want your team to follow?

And that's just one incident, head on over to YouTube and watch all the others for yourself if you like. Just know that Dennis Erickson benched Burfict for his behavior on the field last season. And now he's going to be the leader on defense? So, eventually, the discussion amongst us turned to possible headlines we may see about Arizona State next season, and they were too good not so share with the rest of you.

Just remember that it's all in good fun. So, here you go.

Week 4: "Arizona State falls to USC; Matt Barkley unsure whether he'll press charges"

Week 6: "Utah announces its return to Mountain West after victory over Arizona State"

Week 7: "Devils embracing Burfect leadership; Oregon assistant to be released from hospital tonight"

Week 8: "Chicago gang decides to stop wearing Arizona State merchandise following visit from Vontaze Burfict on Devils' bye week"

Week 10: "Sun Devils stand behind Burfict, say hospitalized umpire 'had it coming'"

Week 12: "Devils refuse to give up hostages, ATF says cafeteria 'impregnable" for time being"

January 2012: "NCAA unanimously approves 'Burfict Rule'"

So, as you can see, it should be an interesting season at Arizona State.

Vontaze Burfict's brand of leadership

He is a talent but I'm glad he decided to go to ASU over USC now. I'm not going to call him a criminal like all these other people but he definately has conduct issues. I would hate to see this guy on a winning team he would be taunting every play.

Calling Vontaze a criminal when he's never had any of the field incidents at ASU?  You are truly a d-bag for throwing out the criminal label as an anonymous poster.  No way you'd throw that insult to VB's face. You'd run off like a frightened girl like your kicker Zendejas.  Remember two seasons ago when Z chased down VB after the game to talk smack and Burfict turned and threw a fake punch?  Z ran off like a frightened girl.
As for Fornelli ... what a garbage article.  You probably have never spoken a word with VB, but got your information from sources like ZonaCat00.

The guy is nothing but a criminal. Can't wait to see Dan Buckner put the guy on his ass.

I don't see the problem here.  So he has a few personal fouls to his credit for what appears to be aggressive, emotional play.  I watched the so called "incidents" on youtube of Burfict's play, and outside of the smack-talk headbutt on the AU QB, none of that seems anymore substantial than an aggressive LB trying to make plays.  The "punch" that is shown in another clip is a move numerous defensive players use in college and the NFL to break a block.  Legal or not, he's not the only player in college football that uses it.  To single him out as some sort of thug is complete B.S.  Feel free to watch tapes of other LB's and DL and I am betting you'll see much of the same.

He may have a bit of a temper when he plays, but to classify the kid as a thug on the field, which is what your "future headlines" do is out-of-line.  Another "funny" report from CBS that completely misses the mark.  Try remembering that the website you write for is CBSSports and not CBSComedy Central.  You are not funny.

Arizona State is terrible anyways. It will make me feel better seeing this guy's mugshot on the news in a few years.
