Kelly: Notre Dame needs to 'beat an SEC team'

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly was in Huntsville, Alabama on Tuesday to give a speech to the Notre Dame Club of Northern Alabama, and while he was there he also made a $5,000 donation from his Kelly Cares Foundation to be used for tornado relief in Alabama. Of course, while visiting tornado-ravaged parts of the state and making a donation was incredibly kind of Kelly, it wouldn't be a Notre Dame Club meeting if talk didn't turn to Notre Dame football.

Which Kelly made clear that, while he was pleased about his team's direction following a four game win streak to finish the 2010 season, there's still plenty of room for improvement. He also went on to say that for the Fighting Irish to once again be taken seriously on a national level, there's only one thing it can do: beat a team from the SEC.

"Clearly, if I'm one of those average college football fans, I think I'm asking the same question," Kelly told the group. "Notre Dame will be taken serious when they beat an SEC team."

Of course, at the moment, Notre Dame does not have a game scheduled against an SEC oppoenent in any of its upcoming schedules. Something Kelly hinted at by saying that he hoped that win over an SEC opponent would come in a BCS bowl game. Also, while the talk of beating an SEC team is nice, what Notre Dame fans really care about is winning a national championship, be it against an SEC school or a Big 12 school, the Golden Domers don't care. Kelly addressed that situation as well.

"I don't mind listening about the past. I think that's great and I don't mind being reminded about it. I don't like to mortgage my future. I like to live in the present. And in the present, we need to win at Notre Dame. We need to win right now."

Kelly: Notre Dame needs to 'beat an SEC team'

BigdaddyQH,

I did make a mistake.  UGA did play Colorado a few years ago, I believe.  And they have a home and home with OSU.  But prior to that they hadn't been North since 1965.  So the point stands.  It's not that ND is refusing to play SEC teams.  It's largely that SEC schools typically don't want to come north AND given the problems with when the SEC wants to play OOC games and that ND probably needs some of those games to be played in Oct and Nov, it's difficult to get on the same page.

BigdaddyQH,

Notre Dame does not refuse to schedule any SEC teams.  That's BS.  The problem is more with the SEC than ND.  SEC teams typically like to play their OOC games early in the season save for a few examples.  ND's schedules tend to be mostly filled in September because that's when they play their Big Ten games.  Also, some of the SEC schools rarely want to go north in October or November.  For example, when was the last time UGA played a northern school in the regular season?  How about UF?  Someone said the last time UF went north was to play Cuse in 1991.  That's 20 years ago.

It makes no sense to make a claim that ND refuses to schedule SEC teams but then has played FSU and Tennessee (an SEC school) in recent memory and will play Miami, OU, Texas in the future (and yes, the road games are slated year wise, if not date wise at this point).  I always love how SEC fans talk about how ND is ducking them.  It's not very logical.  In fact, in some cases, it seems like it's some SEC schools who refuse to talk to ND because their history shows they just don't want to go north and play anyone.

I'm a Bama fan, and would love to see the Fighting Irish on our schedule. And not just to get rid of the pathetic nonconference games like Georgia State. ND and Bama played some great games (even regular season...) back in the 70's, and if memory serves me, the Irish prevented Bama from winning at least two nat'l championships. Maybe we'll get lucky and have a bowl game match-up at least.

Sui Generis -  It appears that you have experienced a number of years diagramming sentence structure under a Nun's tutelage.

When the Irish put a massive hurt on some unfortunate SEC team, all the Nuns will rejoice. Innocent

People in glass houses . . . "pompus" is spelled pompous, you don't need a comma after the words "refund" or "arrogant", "win a season" should be hyphenated because it modifies "school", and you may want to add a conjunction, e.g., "and", after pompous -- it's not necessary to the sentence's structure, but it helps with the sentence's flow.  Chief.

It should be noted that the Irish have games scheduled against Miami, Oklahoma, and Texas, all at home, in the near future.  Notre Dame will have to play those teams on the road eventually.

And they are, it just happens the first game is in South Bend, or at a designated venue where Notre Dame is the home team: Soldier Field, Chicago - Miami; FedEx Field- Maryland; Yankee Stadium - First football game played - Army; Dublin, Ireland - Navy. By scheduling these games it brings the beloved Irish to markets that haven't been able to see them play in person.  As always, the Irish sell out early...so purchase your tickets as soon as possible!

Hoke jokester - thanks for monitoring grammar/spelling on the internet.  Al Gore is proud of you son.  Keep up the good work!

The problem is that Notre Dame refuses to schedule any SEC Teams.  They are too busy playing a schedule largely made up of the Big 10 and the Big East, USC and Stnaford.  Many of Notre Dames games are rivalries, such as USC, Michigan, Michigan State, and Purdue.  Stanford is on the schedule because the Irish always want to end the year on the West Coast for recruiting pruposes, be it in Southern California against USC, or in Northern California against Stanford.  Having said this, Notre Dame has all kinds of openings starting in 2013 if they want to schedule an SEC team.  Hint to the Irish.  We are talking about a legitimate SEC team, NOT Vanderbilt.  It should be noted that the Irish have games scheduled against Miami, Oklahoma, and Texas, all at home, in the near future.  Notre Dame will have to play those teams on the road eventually.

Based on Notre Dame's record against SEC schools (42-32-5) that win should come shortly.

Let the unbridled hate poor forth....
