A report by Joe Schad of ESPN today indicated that North Carolina defensive end Quinton Coples is gaining unwanted attention from the NCAA after he was seen in online pictures from a post-draft party earlier this month. Coples is with former North Carolina players Marvin Austin and Robert Quinn in the pictures, and a man the NCAA has investigated as a possible runner for agents is also visible in some pictures.

The issue here is that the party was held in Washington D.C., and that Austin and Quinn were both barred from playing in 2010 after having taken illegal benefits from agents. That Coples would show up at such a party is enough to garner the NCAA's attention, though there's no indication as yet that his eligibility is in doubt. Still, he's got some questions to answer:

Photographs of Coples with Austin and Quinn that appeared on Facebook and the web site EliteDCMag.com prompted the inquiry. The party is labeled as taking place at "Ultrabar" nightclub. Also seen in photos with players is at least one alleged runner the NCAA has investigated.

The NCAA wants to know how Coples paid for his travel to the party, who paid for his admission and his hotel, and if he accepted any free food or drink.

This sort of controversy is the last thing North Carolina needs after the massive scandal of illegal benefits cost 13 players (mostly high-profile starters) their eligibility, UNC assistant John Blake his job, and agent Gary Wichard his license. Head coach Butch Davis saved his job by acting swiftly once the illegal benefits were discovered and not participating in any objectionable behavior, but if this type of problem continues to cost North Carolina's top players their eligibility, UNC administration officials may have significantly less patience for Davis this time around.

NCAA are a bunch of hypocrits.  Ok, the players get scholarships and housing allowances, but compared to what the NCAA makes off these kids, the tuition and boarding is so small it is almost laughable.  I think all the players on the team should get tuition and boarding and then even a small monthly allowance.

Ineligible for having free food or drinks?  Is this crap over the top or what?  Coples was teammates and probably friends with Austin and Quinn.  Can't he celebrate with them?  Maybe if an NCAA player goes to a wedding reception and has some free food and drink, they should be ineligible also.  The NCAA is so hypocritical.  There has to be a better way.

The NCAA looks into this but turns a blind eey to so much else?

The sad fact is that if UNC were a powerhouse player for the NCAA, nothing would have been done to these players. The SEC continually stocks the "best players money can buy" and gets a free pass. USC thumbs its nose at the NCAA for years before anything is ever done. Hell, I live in a major college town and I can point out dozens of "violations" by players. But luckily, we make too much money for this insanely corrupt association for them to really look into anything.

Was it the smartest thing to go to the party when you know the NCAA can use you as a showing of authority... no. Was it anywhere as bad as Newton being paid close to $200,000 to attend Auburn? Not even close. But you've got to know your place in this world. If you wanted to live the good life with a huge NCAA safety net, you've got to go to the moneymakers.

Can this guy be any dumber?  I don't care if he can prove down to the penny that he paid for everything.  You just don't do it, very poor judgement on his part.  This is the type of uncontrollable behavior and decision making that shortens coaches life spans.

UNC, you guys aren't Ohio State; the NCAA won't let you get away with it.

Skreffty, Ohio St hasn't gotten away with jack-sh*t.  The NCAA has not yet made it's ruling on OSU, but will do so this Fall.  No doubt additional punishment will follow.  Every OSU related issue before the NCAA right now was self-reported by OSU...including Tressels e-mails which have caused a major sh*tstorm.  The University's policy is to be transparent and turn everything over to the NCAA, which is exactly what the NCAA wants.  It also serves up all of OSU's dirty laundry on a silver platter for the press and critics to have a field day with.  So despite making every effort to police itself and keep it clean, butt-munches like you continue to look upon OSU like it is the dirtiest program in America.  I have news for you, the dirtiest program in the land is someone most people think is clean, as it doesn't report every speck of dirt it finds over to the NCAA.  As for OSU, they would have to try to get away with something before they actually will get away with something.

Miami admitted to the Pell Grant problem in 1994, with falsified applications dating back to 1989.  Davis started in 1995.  Davis is also credited for cleaning up the program after their probation years.  Just thought you should know the facts.  Not saying the guy is totally honest (I still hate the way he left for the Browns), but he was not the problem at Miami.

Man, I'm actually starting to feel sorry for you UNC guys.  Maybe you should have an orientation for your student athletes and tell them what they can and cant do, oh wait, they do that.  Nevermind, I dont feel sorry for you anymore....

Butch Davis coached Miami U when they were thugs and got a heck of a lot of Pell Grant money.  He isn't going to change a thing.
