Spurrier says Garcia has 'changed'

The status of South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia has been unclear for the last few months. After being suspended for the umpteenth time -- give or take an umpteen -- this spring, there had been some questions about whether or not Garcia had run out of chances in Columbia. Well, for the last few weeks, the signs have been that Garcia would be returning to the Gamecocks for the 2011 season. On Thursday head coach Steve Spurrier gave perhaps the biggest indication of what will happen with Garcia this fall, as the Ol' Ball Coach said that his quarterback has "changed."

"It seems like he's changed his ways," Spurrier told The Post and Courier. "I hope the university lets him back on the team."

Spurrier also went on to say that Garcia "should" get a partial reinstatement as early as next week that would allow him to workout with the team, though it would not guarantee that he'll be cleared to play in the fall. Still, the fact that Spurrier seems to be on his side can only help Garcia's chances as Spurrier along with school president Harris Pastides and athletic director Eric Hyman will have the ultimate say in Garcia's fate.

Garcia still has a list of requirements that the school wants to see him complete and maintain, and he also has receive clearance from medical professionals who oversee Garcia's involvement in an alcohol abuse program. So it seems that as long as Garcia doesn't step out of line or cause more trouble at South Carolina, he'll be playing football again this fall.

That being said, this is still Stephen Garcia, and given his history of behavior since coming to South Carolina, you can't just assume he's going to be a perfect citizen.

Spurrier says Garcia has 'changed'

Spurrier has gotten soft in his old age.........When he was at Florida he'd throw your a s s out of the game in a heartbeat for something minor and didn't mind sending a player down the road. But he had a lot more talent at his disposal then too, now he doesn't have much choice but to keep some guys on because he just can't get top prospects at every position in SC

Nice direct shot....maybe you should read the comment before the post about Garcia...lets get facts stright Garcia isn't that great of QB...his mental errors cause a ton of issues for the team...look what happened at the South Carolina VS FSU....yes a huge game changer was loosing Litemore but Garcia muffed up a ton...all in all Gamecocks have a solid program and should be even better...but could be even better if Garcia wasn't there....

McElroy was a freak of nature.  You can't use him to compare a majority of the other college QBs.  Wasn't he the first college quarterback to ever when a Rhoades Scholar? or whatever it is he won....

Garcia had and has great grades

Try being a QB in the SEC!! 4-1/2 years is NOT long to graduate from a Superior coached team!! As for his "run ins" ?? only one wasn't about beer! Wake up ,get off ur highhorse and go get a 12 pack and relax! Sorry ,but we have no more room in the SEC right now!! :-))

Everyone wants to bash the SEC! Why,because wr are the best in the NCAA,PERIOD!! Get your facts straight! He attended the USC for 4-1/2 year, not long for an SEC QB to get a degree when you realize all the work it takes to play in the SEC . Has anyone making a comment actually been to college?? I did and I also drank a few brewskis! except for his redshirt freshman year all he has done is key a proffesor's car! Everything else has been blown out of proportion about BEER! BEER,peo pl e. Get off you highhorse and join the real world ! Had it not been for a real media coverup ,Garcia would have led the SEC in QB ratings not Cash Newton! And Lattimore,Jeffery and soon to prove Clowney are no "flukes" Wake up ball fans,it's 2011 !

Garcia to take care of the Florida Gators Again

I want to thank Stephen Garcia for leading the Gamecocks to a 36-14 spanking of the Gators in Gainesville last year.  Please do it again in Columbia this year.

Looks like "winning is everything" in college football.  Coaches play those they think can win games and insure their job and their ego.  As for Garcia, time will tell but don't bet too much on his "Changing!"
