The recent slew of NCAA investigations and scandal has brought the Southern Methodist narrative from the late 1970's - early 1980's back to the forefront. The dominance of Eric Dickerson and Craig James has now been re-told to a new generation of college football fans, as the many would consider the pair the greatest duo in college football.

So Dickerson and James have created a recognition to award the greatest pair in college football each year. The Pony Express Award "will look at two- and three-player tandems from across the nation, ultimately honoring the combination whose work ethic, desire, on- and off-field leadership and playmaking ability best fuel their team."

The award will be voted on by a blue ribbon panel of experts that will form the award's board of directors, and awarded at the completion of the 2011 regular season. The watch list for the inaugural award was released this week.

Inaugural Pony Express Award watch list released

I agree whole heartedly, is their a WORSE example of college atheletes than these two?!?!?  I am really glad James passed down his work ethic and teamwork to his son.  I am not sure but I think Bo Jackson and Lionel James may have been a better running back tandem than those two.  If nothing else they would certainly represent the award much better.

Inaugural Pony Express Award watch list released

It is hard to conceive of a tandem producing more than Oregon's - QB Darron Thomas, RB LaMichael James, RB Kenjon Barner. The offense has proven itself to be tops in the country with all three returning after Heisman-worthy campaigns last year. It is intriguing to see some really good defenders listed here but what post-season award pitting offense and defense ever goes to the defense?

But do we really need another award? The Heisman will continue to get all the focus, so much that almost all the others are now wrapped up in a single ceremony.

Sorry, I thought the award was for players who got their universities in trouble (like Dickerson and James).  Terrelle Pryor would win hands down.

Inaugural Pony Express Award watch list released

This seems a bit ridiculous to me.  With all the negativity going on in college football now, do we really want to act like the pony express from their SMU days is really the group to be recognizing players.  Plus, Craig James is one of the most pathetic people associated with college football.  This is a bad idea all the way around.
