When Oregon's All-American cornerback Cliff Harris was cited for driving 118 mph on Sunday night, most of the chatter was in regard to the triple digit speed. But a report by a local television station has drawn attention to possible NCAA violations that may have led to the incident.

The car Harris was driving at the time of the when he was clocked was rented by a university employee, KEZI in Eugene reported Monday. Police said that Harris was pulled over with two other unnamed Oregon football players and one other friend in a car that was rented from Hertz. KEZI learned from Hertz the name of the woman who rented the car. The woman's identity was not revealed, though she insists she can prove no wrongdoing.
"So, I rented the car for my own purposes on Friday. Cliff Harris and his licensed friend, who showed me his license, asked to borrow it and paid me the full amount in cash that I paid for the rental," said the woman, who agreed to speak to KEZI on the condition of anonymity.

The woman, who describes herself as a friend of Harris over the past few months, said she was unaware he would be driving and also said she has proof that the amount she paid for the rental car matches two separte deposits she made into her bank account Friday.

"I do have a copy of my bank statement, showing two deposits Friday of $180 and $120."
As long as Harris and the unidentified friend can prove no extra benefits were provided in the transaction, Oregon might be able to dodge a bullet this time. Still, it's not a good look for a national contender heading into the season to face potential violations when it comes to university employees. You have to imagine there will be skeptics here. But if the school and NCAA agree that the woman has done no wrong, the Ducks only suffer the publicity blow of their recklessly driving football players.

It was a joke, not an argument. Perhaps I should've added two WinkWink's.

Oops, missed the Wink to begin with.  Sorry.

Someone should talk to Hertz about their rental policies.  I cannot believe that one could rent a car under their name and then have others drive it.  Who would be liable for any accidents?  Did the university employee purchase insurance from Hertz?  Did she use her own and would the students have been covered (doubtful).  This is a serious lack of judgement on several people's parts.  While this does not appear to be that big of a deal, there are other issues related to this that needs to be answered.

This is precisely why we should pay college players a monthly stipend. You think Cliff would've been trying to break the land speed record in his OWN vehicle?

This is a dumb argument to try to make as your point of a stipend has nothing to do with the issue mentioned borrowing a car and speeding.  Please explain how you get that 1+1=3.

Report: Cliff Harris' car rented by UO employee

This seems like an improper benefits issue similar to tOSU.  University employee rents car that would not be otherwise obtainable by the students and gives car to Football players for their own personal use.

Look at the facts that we currently have:  1) employee rents car for personal use on Friday.  The same day she gives the car to Football players for thier personal use.  Football players are under 25 and as such can not rent car on their own.  2) Employee claims Harris and friends pay her for the entire amount of the rental and it is verified by two deposits totallying $300.  Why 2 deposits?  Why so much money?  A weekend rental typically costs under $100.  A quick search on expedia shows that a Nissan Altima type care would cost about $23.99 per day.  Speculation:  There is a per day premium charged by Hertz to add additional drivers under the age of 25 to the renal contract and as such the original purpose of the car rental was to give the Football players a car that they could not otherwise get on their own....improper benefit?

NCAA rule 16.12.2.3c states: An institutional employee or representative of the institution's athletics interests may not provide a student-athlete with extra benefits or services, including, but not limited to: The use of an automobile.

What is not mentioned here is that he was driving with a suspended license. I would argue simply getting a speeding ticket, even if at such a dangerous speed, is not worth of getting suspended from games, but driving with a suspended license is blatently breaking the law and shows continued poor judgement. That infraction I believe deserves a one game suspension. (But Chip Kelly loves this guy and I will bet he does not suspend him.)

Nothing will come of this.  If Auburn can shop for players and nothing happen then this will pass as well.  Just because a player gets in trouble off the field doesn't mean automatic suspension.  That is ridiculous.  Bad PR, yes.  Suspension, no way.

He sould be suspended for a couple of games no questions asked. It would be very difficult for Oregon to beat LSU with out their starting CB and all american punt returner. This would in all likleyhood knock the Ducks out of any NCG picture. Really dumb mistake on Harris's part.
