Pitt, Penn State to renew rivalry in 2016

One of college football's classic rivalries is back.

Well, it'll be back five years from now. But whatever the timeframe, that old archrivals Pitt and Penn State have reached an agreement to renew their series with a home-and-home arrangement in 2016 and 2017 is welcome news indeed.

Because it wasn't that long ago that the Panthers and Nittany Lions were playing one of the biggest annual games in Division I, as both Joe Paterno's Penn State teams and Johnny Majors' Pitt squads ranked among the best teams in the country in the late '70s and early '80s. But with both formerly-independent teams finding conferences and Pitt's fortunes (in particular) on the national level in decline, the rivalry waned, and was last played in 2000 when Pitt won a 12-0 slugfest.

The Panthers are scheduled play host to the first game of the home-and-home Sept. 10, 2016, at Heinz Field. The return date in Happy Valley is set for Sept. 16 of the following year.

And PSU started up a home and away with SU.  I find it interesting PSU starting up...well lets say starting back up with these teams from the Big East.

Both SU and Pitt have good programs.  Now they just have to prove it on the field.

Congratulations to two AD's with enough balls to schedule this matchup.   With the BCS system providing no real incentive for a league winning team to play a tough out of conference schedule they two are doing it.      I hope they keep it going and I hope the college football lords figure out a way to reward the few teams that schedule more than one BCS conference game.

Now if they would only bring back the Pitt script logo, all would be right with the world.  That and two straight victories over PSU.

Sorry PSU doesn't play Alabama every week (only once this yr...) before Big 10 play.  These cupcakes fill over 100,000 seats every time.  A PSU home game is a special event that draws people from hundreds of miles away, regardless of the opponent.  It's something that someone who is not a PSU grad/fan can never understand.  Certainly not fans from schools who struggle to draw 20,000 for conference games.

Pitt can count on at least one home sell-out in the next 6 years.  I'm sure we will be held hostage to purchase the full season (like in 2000) to get a ticket from Pitt, and be stuck with garbage that can't be given away...  Pitt/Temple anyone? - with nearly 9,000 of your closest freinds..

This game should be played every year.  Bring back the rivalry with Pitt instead of filling the schedule with cupcakes before beginning BIG 10 conference games.  PSU and Paterno have been forcing season ticket holders to pay top dollar for tickets to games against garbage teams who will gladly make the trip to Happy Valley to absorb a sound beating along with the hefty check.

Id rather Pitt play someone or somewhere easier to get to or with a higher profile like Ohio St. or Michigan.

Pitt, Penn State to renew rivalry in 2016

; Some of my fondest memories were the  games against Pitt and Alabama.I am thrilled to see them both renewed.  I suspect a number of posters don't have a clue  how big the rivalry was betweeen Pitt and PSU.  Today it no longer exist ( refuse to get into debate as to why) but look forward to the instate rivalry reborn.
