Scary news coming out of Reno that Nevada wide receiver Brandon Wimberly was shot in the abdomen early Saturday morning. According to the Reno Gazette Journal, Reno Police Lt. Keith Brown said the injuries are not "life-threatening, but they're probably life-changing." Wimberly was reportedly shot near the Reno Aces ballpark, and nearby police responded when they heard people arguing and gunfire.

“We know the Reno Police Department is conducting a complete investigation and have instructed our student-athletes to cooperate fully with the police." said Nevada athletic director Cary Groth on Saturday afternoon. "It is an unfortunate situation and we wish Brandon a speedy recovery from his injuries.”

Wimberly and other members of the football team reportedly got into a fight with another group. When the other group got into a car, Wimberly approached the car and was then shot in the abdomen before the car sped away. Lt. Brown also went on to say that the police aren't getting a lot of cooperation from the witnesses, and that includes Wimberly's teammates.

Wimberly was the WAC Freshman of the Year in 2009 and has caught 94 passes for 1,215 yards and 6 touchdowns in his first two seasons with Nevada.

UPDATE: According to Nevada head coach Chris Ault, Wimberly is not expected to be able to play football again. He had damage to his intestines and colon from the gunshot.

Nevada's Wimberly shot in abdomen

I echo Jim Rome's list, but having visited Reno for many years, I am distressed by how bad the city has become over the last 5 or 10 years.  Years ago, it was a friendly place, and one could walk around pretty much anywhere.  My wife and I were married there, and returned to play cards, listen to music, and just hang out often.  Now, even in the middle of the day, big sections of the town make me nervous.  The poverty, evidence of drug use, gang activity, and so on, is too prevalent to ignore.  I even went inside some casinos and felt threatened.  Of course, city leaders will never admit that their city is not safe anymore, but sadly, it's true.

And by the way, it isn't a black/white issue.  I saw people of all races and colors overcome by poverty and engaging in dangerous or suspicious activites.  A bullet doesn't ask what color you are, nor what color the person pulling the trigger is.  Get a clue.

Meanwhile, I won't be visiting Reno any time soon.

"Early Saturday morning"....

To paraphrase Jim Rome, here's a list of places it's OK to be at two o'clock in the morning.

1. In your bed.

End of list.

I feel for this guy, but when you lie down with dogs...

I hate to say it and I hope the kid recovers as best he can, but I'm really not surprised any more when something like this is reported.  It's almost like saying, "okay, here's another one ... who's next?"

First of all I hope for a full recovery.  Second..can we go one day without a black football getting in trouble, arrested. stabbed, shot or have an altercation with wife or girlfriend?? As all other cultures are on the rise the black culture is regressing in terms of education, parenting and following the basic rules of society.

Hm...witnesses not cooperating with the police...where have I heard this before?

Oh, yeah, that one convicted killer in ... Seattle, was it? whose conviction was thrown out because the prosecutor had dared to suggest that black people don't cooperate with the police?

How dare *this* article state that witnesses aren't cooperating with the police!  Even if its true, dont' they know it's racist to say that!????

Okay, maybe he shouldn't have gone up to the car after the altercation, but to say "he deserved it," or that he's automatically a "thug" because he got shot is ridiculous. If some guy pisses me off and I walk towards his car to argue with him, I don't deserve to get shot in the guts.

The problem I see with this situation is the lack of co-operation from the "witnesses" who are supposed to be his friends and teammates. They must be fearing some kind of serious retribution or something, which says to me that this is likely gang-related. While I agree that these kids need to get away from this element, that's not as easy as some people seem to think, and to say that someone deserves this is ignorant.

Get better, kid, and hopefully you can take advantage of your free education (if you still get one) and make something of yourself outside of football.

Yeah, I am sure he was begging for it.  Very nice that you have absolutely no compasion for a 20 year old kid, that may have just made a mistake.  I guess if every time you have made a mistake in your life you should have been shot?  That I would applaude!!!!
