Heath Shuler won't address Tennessee AD job

Former Tennessee quarterback Heath Shuler is currently a North Carolina congressman, but earlier this week a radio host in Knoxville, Tony Basilio, reported that Shuler was interested in the open athletic director's spot at his alma mater.

Shuler addressed the report Thursday during a visit to a local Boys and Girls Club for breakfast in Union City, Tenn.

“Right now I’m focused on the job at hand and the issues that our nation is facing,” Shuler told The (Union City) Messenger. “It’s very flattering that my name has been mentioned, but today I’m focused on talking to these kids.

“My blood runs orange. There is a family atmosphere at the university that is special. It’s something that you don’t see at a lot of other places. I’ll always be a part of the UT family, and that’s something the good Lord has blessed me with.”

This is the part where Tennessee fans and alumni in favor of Shuler taking the job will point out that "he didn't say he doesn't want the job!" Still, what will matter more than whether Shuler has legitimate interest in the gig is whether Tennessee is interested in Shuler.

While Shuler may have attended Tennessee and played football there, that doesn't change the fact he has no experience as an athletic director. Given the current situation in Knoxville with the NCAA snooping around both the football and basketball programs, the school will likely be more inclined to hire somebody who has a lot of experience running an athletic department.

Something that Shuler's former coach Phil Fulmer seemed to understand when he expressed his interest in the job but also acknowledged that he wasn't likely to get it

Let me see if the choice of selecting an Athletic Director is between Heath Shuler and Fulmer, which would I select, if I had the power to do so?

Heath Shuler, democratic congressman, from North Carolina, assisted in voting in Obama Care. Have not tried to lower the debt of the United States even though we are currently over spent by a huge margin. Is in favor of spending more money. This person in my opinion is not a budget type individual that would keep the athletic department within the required budget.

He has no experience in being a head coach, nor as an athletic director. The only experience is sports is that of playing quarterback.

He really might not have Tennessee in his heart as he now reside in the state of North Carolina. It could be that he would be using Tennessee as a stepping stone to another position.

Now on the other hand, Fulmer has head coaching experience, was the former head coach at the school. He still reside in the state of Tennessee and would have the university at heart as this would probably be his last paying position, except that of a sport consultant for a pro or college team

He is well respected in the college sports profession. He currently know the ins and outs of recruiting. He could establish a very good compliance department and know what to look for in the hiring of a the necessary compliance officers.

Coaches he would hire could not blow smoke up his arse, because he has been where they are and would want to go.

So if it boiled down to an experienced politician and an ex head coach, I am going with Coach Fulmer all day and every day.

ih8stupidfanz--That's a very good idea IMO.  The school needs someone who knows the territory and who can walk the "tough love" tightrope, and she seems to be just the type.

Lets be honest here UT needs a guy who will be a leader and set a tone of compliance. Also some one that will help create an atmosphere for recruiting. Need the whole campus behind all the major sports. Hell Pat Summit would be the best choice.

Blues and DBT, I prefer the TOS and the extra's on CBs, but the format is not quite as user friendly. Its a hybrid between Rivals.com and ESPN.

All in all, not to bad.

WIth all the trouble the UT sports programs have been in the past few years, along with the GREAT job that's been done in the hireing of Coach's, I would hope to spit that they would MAKE SURE they hired someone with experience in the AD position.  Shuler may be able to make it to Congress but he sure as hell couldn't do it in the NFL - stay in Congress.  Fulmer, stay retired they don't need you with all of your inexperience in the AD role.

DBT - I read the rules and TOS - very lax as long as you aren't profane or attack someone personally.
