The preseason media poll for the Big 12 was released on Wednesday afternoon, and for the most part, it looks exactly like you'd expect it to. Though it definitely doesn't look like something that Texas fans will enjoy or approve of. Forty-three members of the media voted in the poll, and Oklahoma was the runaway favorite as the Sooners garnered 41 of the 43 first-place votes.

Here's how the entire poll looked.

  1. Oklahoma (41) - 428 points
  2. Texas A&M (1) - 362 points
  3. Oklahoma State (1) - 360 points
  4. Missouri - 281 points
  5. Texas - 265 points
  6. Baylor - 194 points
  7. Texas Tech - 191 points
  8. Kansas State - 140 points
  9. Iowa State - 93 points
  10. Kansas - 51 points
Obviously, the thing that sticks out more than anything is the fact that Texas -- Texas -- comes in ranked fifth. Even though Nebraska has left the conference, the Big 12 media still feels that there are four teams in the conference better than the Longhorns.

Now, personally, I think preseason polls of any kind are silly. How any of us are supposed to pretend we know how good a football team will be without seeing it run a single play against another team is trivial.

Still, Texas is fifth! Only one spot ahead of Baylor! Think about that.

It's amazing how one bad season can have such an impact on a school's reputation. I can't see ranking the Longhorns any lower than fourth in the conference, and I'd have them above Missouri. I just can't help but feel that even though Garrett Gilbert struggled last year, coming into 2011 with that experience will only help him, and the Longhorns offense can't be much worse than it was in 2010. Meanwhile, Missouri has lost Blaine Gabbert to the NFL, and that's not an easy person to replace on offense.

Agreed.  Oklahoma vs. Nebraska should be a law.  It should be a non-conference rivalry in late September.  Now that it's possible to make it happen again, it should happen.

I agree a Oklahoma vs Nebraska NC game would be one of the coolest games ever played. The media would play that story line to death. I still think a OU vs Nebraska game should be a law, it is unamerican not to have this game at least to those of us who grew up watching these games.

Sooners are a class organization with a damn solid team.  They should be in the race to the end.  Good luck to the Sooner Nation.

Sooners should win it, especially with the absence of the CCG and no trip to Mizzou or A&M this year. Sooners still go to Okie State, but that hasn't been too much of a problem the last several trips, albeit still always close games there. Texas will be better than people think. Fifth in the conference is a tad absurd. UT does have a tough schedule, though, but I can't see UT players being content with what happened last year and should translate into inspired play. Some of those late-season losses last year were after the Horns had simply packed it in and called it a season IMO. Mizzou will be good, but must come to Normantown. Pinkel is a great coach who perennially does more with less.

Hats off to our Nebraska poster, Black9495. Most of us Sooners will miss you Huskers as well and wish you guys success in the Big 10. We do need to meet in a big NCG game or any bowl game just to swap the great stories from the past. Sadly, the battle of the big reds is no more.

Good luck to the Oklahoma Sooners this year. I'm a Husker fan and want to wish the Sooners luck as they play in a New Big 12 conf. this year. I have always had the upmost respect for the Sooners and their program. I hope some how the Huskers and the Sooners will play for the NC this year and many years to come.

Do you see how much talent Missouri has coming back this year from a 10 win team?  Give me a break

The deepest and most talented team Pinkel has ever had

I completely agree.  And this isn't a knock against Mizzou, but with all the talent Texas has, and the new coaching staff that's certain to bring energy and a new look, I don't see Texas being mediocre in the conference, let along the entire country.

It's funny how fair weather the media is.  OU has a horrible 2009 campaign, and the media (except for Phil Steele) puts them out of the top 10 during the pre-season, yet they finished up in typical OU fashion.  I don't expect Texas to have anything close to the year they had last year, and see them winning a lot of games, and being in contention for the Big 12, along with A&M, OSU and Missouri.
