Kansas' Berglund charged with assault

One of Kansas' top recruits from its 2011 class has some legal issues to deal with. Brock Berglund, a three-star quarterback from Colorado, has been charged with third-degree assault for an incident that took place in April.

Berglund allegedly punched a man who had been harrassing his girlfriend, though a complaint wasn't filed until June 24. Coach Turner Gill is aware of the issue.

"We are going to let the legal process run its course," Gill said in a statement. "We will also handle it appropriately internally here at KU."

This is just the latest twist in what has been a confusing story since Berglund committed to Kansas. He graduated from high school early and enrolled at Kansas in January, but he hasn't been around campus all that much since then.

Berglund missed spring practice and hasn't been participating in the team's summer workout sessions, and while you might think that this legal issue definitely has something to do with it, as the Lawrence Journal-World points out, the alleged incident didn't take place until the sixth day of spring practice.

Making things a bit stranger, Gill announced that Berglund wouldn't be participating in spring practice due to "personal circumstances" in March, a full month before the alleged assault even took place.

All of this led to a lot of speculation that Berglund was reconsidering his decision to attend Kansas, which Berglund put to rest last week. Still, considering that Berglund was being considered a candidate to start for the Jayhawks at quarterback this season, he hasn't done much to help make that a reality the last few months.

Oh, golly, let it go, Missouri fans.  You started the Big Ten skirt-hiking, and we finished it.  Every one of you Mizzou fans that crucify the Huskers for leaving are giant hypocrites.  The fan punching incident was years ago and no--I repeat, NO--Husker fan has ever advocated that terrible behavior.  So get over it.  And the KU fans that want to see Turner Gill fail because he's a Nebraska guy, well.....you have to ask yourself what kind of fans you really are?  Cheering for your coach to fail?  The man made the University of Buffalo relevant.  BUFFALO!  So the least you can do is give the guy your support and 3 years to get everything in place.  I'm used to Mizzou giving Husker fans potshots and low-blows, but this is ridiculous.

Figures you're a Nuhbraska fan.  A little history (not so distant):

Nebraska's football coach says he's reviewing an ugly incident caught on videotape after Saturday's loss to Missouri.   A Nebraska player is seen hitting and knocking down a Missouri fan when the two crossed paths on the field in Columbia, Mo. Fans swarmed the field after the Tigers beat the Cornhuskers 41-24.

The Nebraska player, Kellen Huston, ran on toward the lockerroom, while the Missouri quarterback, Brad Smith, helped the fan off the turf.  Nebraska coach Frank Solich says he has spoken with Huston but no disciplinary action has been taken. He says he regrets it if a fan was hurt.

That's the Nuhbraska way.

Good luck Big Ten, you've invited a "university" that recently was kicked out of the Association of American Universities because its academics just wasn't up to snuff.  Delaney forced through an invitation because of the name, and what he got was a cheap replica of what once was (before the elimination of partial and non-qualifiers that Tom Osborne loaded the Huskers' ranks with).  When Nuhbraska has had to play on an even turf, they've found the tredding to be much tougher - not to mention luring great atheletes to that desolate, frozen wasteland.

figures you're a Husker fan ... you can have Turner - oh wait, you had a chance and hired Coach Pelini instead.

That should've been a HUGE red flag that if Doc Tom passed on this joker, then Kansas should have as well.

seems like the only people who like this idiot are from Nebraska.

lol because yall have had a long outsanding college football program that has won alot of conference and national titles.....oh wait sorry i was confusing school. THIS IS KU FOOTBALL.....your not gonna get the top name coach plus Gill took a risk coming for this job anyways with the big12 being a round robin yall will get a unhealthy dose of the big12 south every year.

wake up and realize you wont get the urban meyers of the coaching world and be happy they still talk about you since you have done much since that miracle year in 07

Wrong. Coach Gill should NOT let him start - at least not in the early going of the season - because he hasn't participated in any of the workouts or bonded together with the other KU players. If Gill lets him play, it sends the wrong message to the other players that there is a different set of rules for certain players depending on whether or not you were a blue chip or a bottom-of-the-barrel recruit and will negatively affect the respect he receives from the players. Gill CANNOT afford to be a softie like Terry Allen was.

Our legal system is a joke.  Idiot harasses Berglund's girlfriend, gets his butt kicked, finds out later he is a star recruit, then presses charges.  Must have been raised by his mother.

Kansas' Berglund charged with assault

So the guy's girlfriend is getting harrassed, he gives him a little "encouragement" to stop acting like a jerk, and gets charged with assault?

Where's justice?  I guess the lesson is that if some guy is being a creep, we can't touch him or do anything to stop him lest we be get a lawsuit filed against us for standing up for girl?  Seems fair.  Turner should let this guy play regardless.  This just sounds like a frivelous lawsuit from a jerk who got called out for his crude behavior.
