Bubba Starling may be one of Nebraska's prized commitments in its latest recruiting class, and he may have been working out with the team this summer, but that doesn't mean he'll still be on the Cornhuskers' roster this fall. The quarterback is also a pretty good baseball player, good enough to have been drafted fifth overall by his hometown Kansas City Royals in June's MLB amateur draft.

Still, until he signs a contract with the Royals, there's a chance that Starling will stay in Lincoln and at the moment there's a bit of a gap between what the Royals have offered Starling and what he and his agent are looking for. According to Nebraska beat reporter Sean Callahan, that gap is $2.5 million.

It's a big difference, but let's be realistic. Starling grew up a Royals fan and he's not been offered $7.5 million to play for them. Whether he wants $10 million and gets it or not, he's still got $7.5 million sitting on the table. Put yourself in his position for a second. Would you pass on that kind of money knowing that if your baseball career didn't pan out you could still come back to football in the future as so many others have?

No, I wouldn't either.

Starling's name may not be on the contract yet, but it will be soon enough.

I agree for the most part, I'm just not convinced Martinez is that good. He trys to do too much on his own without thinking.  I feel he needs the competition to get better.  Without Starling, I see Martinez getting complacent.

It doesn't work that way.  If he leaves after a year he will have to give back a pro-rated portion of the signing bonus, so he would make more than the average person, but not enough to set him up for life.

dk13beso - This kid hasn't taken a snap in college so nobody can predict this guy is going to come in and be a star and beat out Martinez, NOBODY!! He might even redshirt

NU doesn't need this guy to be successful and if he wants to go to pro ball then more power to him. I am totally fine with the QB talent NU has and that they are pursuing. Even if Martinez gets hurt I like what is behind him in Carnes. not worried one bit.

My point - If he goes pro - BIG FRICKIN DEAL!! Good luck to him.

$7.5 million is more than most of us make in a lifetime.

Take the money and go 1 year. If it doesn't work out, no biggie. He will not have to work another day ever unless he wants to.

"he will get even better playing baseball at nu"

He was the #5 overall pick in the MLB draft. If he really wants to make it in baseball, he needs to go to the pros. He might improve in college but I doubt college ball would be a huge challenge to him when he's getting drafted that high, especially playing in the Big Ten, a notoriously weak baseball conference. He should take the money at this point, even if the Royals don't budge from 7.5 million. As has already been stated, he can always come back to college and play football, so might as well take the guaranteed money at this point and not leave your future to chance.
