The man who has worked so furiously to hold the Big 12 together says he's taking reports of Texas A&M to the SEC "very seriously." Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe spoke to the American-Statesman on Wednesday night about the issue. He said he has not been in contact with any Texas A&M administration members, Beebe has been preoccupied with Mark Emmert's presidential retreat in Indianapolis.

"I've been doing that and dealing with this firestorm at the same time," Beebe said. "I'll put it this way, I'm taking it very seriously. I've been talking to a number of people. Obviously, there are a significant number of Aggie supporters who are interested in going in that direction."

One reason Aggie supporters are reportedly so adamant about the move is in response to the conference's handling of Texas and the ESPN-supported Longhorn Network. Texas president William Powers was also at the NCAA summit, and reportedly also discussed the issue with Beebe.  What many dismissed as internet rumors took on new life when Texas A&M president R. Bowen Loftin released this statement on Wednesday:

President Loftin is committed to doing what is best for Texas A&M not only now, but also in the future. We continue to have wide-ranging conversations regarding all aspects of the university, including both academics and athletics.

The timing and wording of that message made it appear awfully cryptic considering the circumstances. All of the Big 12 athletic directors met a week ago to discuss the Longhorn Network, and they voted unanimously to postpone the broadcasting of high school games for one year. At the time, it seemed as though the weakened conference was once again on the same page.

"We had a tremendous meeting with the athletic directors," Beebe told the American-Statesman. "My view was everybody was comfortable with it."

It seems Texas A&M is either uncomfortable with the current conditions in the Big 12, or just exploring their options. Either way all signs point to these conversations with the SEC appear to be happening. But we can only wait to see if anything comes from them.

My math may be a little sketchy, but that still looks like a losing record for A&M.

15-15 (UT's record vs. A&M last 30 years; 1981-2011)
21-19 (UT's record vs A&M last 40 years)
30-20 (UT's record vs A&M last 50 years)

Most of UT's win all-time win advantage happened in the horse and buggy era.

You are exactly correct.  The SEC only needs one team from Texas to expand all the other schools' in the conference into Texas HS recruiting.  Likewise, for the ACC area.  Say goodbye to Uof Texas dominance.

The SEC will look east to Virginia Tech to balance out its divisions.  The Hokies bring a new, huge market; great fan base; great football program; and will be a great fit.

Oklahoma has a better tradition, but comes from a smaller market and is probably tethered to Oklahome State whom the SEC doesn't want.  The other problem with OU or any other Big 12 school is that adding either of them would require a realignment of SEC divisions with Alabama or Auburn going to the East, and therefore the SEC losing an annual rivalry game between either Alabama and Tennessee or Auburn and Georgia (to say nothing of the lost annual LSU and Ole Miss rivalries for team that goes east).

Here's the problem folks - A&M isn't going to go alone. The SEC isn't dumb enough to have unbalanced divisions. The bigger question is this - who is the REAL fish the SEC is after? Oklahoma? Texas?

All this smoke is implying a much bigger fire. Wonder where it will end...

That post is filled with ignorance.

1. The Big 10 LOVED getting Nebraska.  Great historic program and fan base.  Adds a lot to the Big 10.
2. A&M would actually fair well since were already a TOP 10 TEAM.  Recruiting would improve as well as the only school that can allow people to stay in Texas and play in the SEC.
3. Real Texas Football... 5-7??? Wondering what that definition is???

JEEZ! How many more crybabies do we have to deal with before TEXAS says kiss our ass, we are out of here! Let A&M go to the SEC and watch them get thier butt kicked year in and year out, we were glad that those red-headed Nebraska crybabies went to the BIG10 (like they really wanted them, the BIG 10 wanted them like a bad case of herpes)! What a bunch of whinners, co'mon aggies pull your big boy panties(yes panties) and play ball, like real TEXAS FOOTBALL!

Well well well Dan......the other day you gave an interview saying most Aggie alums and directors prefer the big twelve.....where are they now? You are a moron and we need to fire you and bring back the old SWC. So blind that you could not see this coming? Why can't you do the right thing and get rid of Texas? Invite TCU or get Nebraska back.....not to hard to kick 1 school to save the rest. But then again you do not live in reality do you?
