UPDATE: The suspension and Shepard's eligibility for the West Virginia game were confirmed by Michael Bonnette, LSU's SID, on Thursday.

After uncertain compliance issues held LSU wide receiver Russell Shepard out of the Tigers' opener against Oregon, local reports suggest the talented wide receiver is serving a three-game suspension and will return for the Tigers Sept. 24 matchup with West Virginia.

Sources have confirmed to both The Times Picayune and the Associated Press that Shepard's punishment for violation of an NCAA rule will be three games, including the opener against the Ducks. Shepard jeopardized his eligibility by discussing the details of an NCAA investigation with teammate Craig Loston. The investigation was centered around the infamous Will Lyles, who was paid by LSU - along with Oregon, Cal, and others - for recruiting services.

The touted junior will be an immediate upgrade to the Tigers' offense, which currently lacks that big-play threat that you would want on a National Championship contender. Everything else about the Tigers' performance on Saturday suggested that they deserve to be in that discussion, but there was not evidence that the offense is prepared to put up points quickly. Getting him back for the trip to Morgantown to face Dana Holgorsen and the high-powered West Virginia offense could end up being a difference-maker in an otherwise trap-game scenario.

Report: LSU WR Shepard serving 3-game suspension

Trap game? Are you serious? LSU was every bit as big and nasty last season, and needed a punt return TD to edge West Virginia 20-14 on a Saturday night in Baton Rouge. Last season WVU was coached by the dumbest head coach in the NCAA last season, and the worst offensive co-ordinator in history. They are an entirely different animal offensively with Dana Holgorsen as new head coach. On paper, it would seem that LSU would be a huge favorite in this game, but if both teams are unbeaten going in, it's on. Morgantown isn't Baton Rouge by any stretch of the imagination, but it's a really tough place to win. It will be interesting to see what Vegas says if both teams are unbeaten. Of course, that is a big if. LSU will no doubt be undefeated, but WVU must face a Maryland team on the road that has a full two weeks to prepare. You want to talk "trap game". Maryland is the quintessential trap game. WVU will have a tough time getting by Maryland, if at all. Hopefully for the sake of college football fans nationwide, both team will be unblemished and it will be huge game.

I just want to pile on the "trap-game" comment too. There is no way LSU will be overlooking or disrespecting West Virginia for that one. The game in BR was close last year; and all of us who know and love LSU football have had this game circled for a long time as one of their biggest tests of 2011. I'm hoping the extra 2 days LSU gets to prepare will equal out the home field/travel disadvantage. I suspect we'll see one hard arse-kicking performance from both sides.

I'm sure that Shepard will boost the offense some, but the defense is where teams win and lose. LSU has a nasty stingy defense, while WVU has a pretty solid one themselves. It will be interesting to see which team is able to create the most turnovers, because I believe that is where the game will be won/lost.

The NCAA has lost all integrity that they did have. It will be great if they go away and bring in the playoffs.

Absolutely agree with JoMtneer that the game against WVU is not a trap game for LSU. For the benefit of Chris Patterson, a trap game is playing a sneaky good but underrated opponent the week before a game against a highly anticipated (usually highly ranked) opponent on the schedule. The concern obvioulsy being that the team may overlook (and possibly lose to) the underrated opponent because they're looking ahead to the big game the next week. LSU plays unranked Kentucky the week after they visit Morgantown, not Bama or Florida. Even if you wanted to call WVU a sneaky good, underrated opponent (which makes no sense since they're a nationally ranked team), Kentucky is by no means a big game on LSU's schedule. Every SEC opponent can be tough, but LSU will definitely not be looking past WVU because they're focusing on a mediocre Kentucky team.  Calling the game against WVU a trap game scenario makes not sense at all.

I for one am just glad to hear that he can return for this game.  Always better to face an opponent that has their full roster of players (not sure what will transpire with the others which were in the bar brawl).  Last year was a very interesting game at LSU... I am hoping for another close and physical contest in Morgantown this year.  Let's Go Mountaineers!

Trap game scenario? How is playing another ranked opponent a "trap game"? And the NCAA is a sham organization, I'll be glad when the superconferences are formed and they all show the NCAA the door.

I can't wait until all the schools break away from the ncaa, all they are is a bunch of blood suckers and bottom feeders. they let things go for some schools and hammer the schools that try to do the right thing, I know a guy that works for the ncaa and he's a dirt bag.
