Report: Oklahoma wants Beebe removed from Big 12

The Big 12 soap opera may have hit its soapy apex today when Oklahoma, fresh off a regents meeting that authorized president David Boren to take action regarding conference realignment, reportedly issued an ultimatum to the conference: either commissioner Dan Beebe goes or Oklahoma does.

Citing an unnamed source, NewsOK.com's Berry Tramel broke the news on Tuesday afternoon:

“It's going to take major, major reforms” for OU, and thus Oklahoma State, to consider remaining in the Big 12, the source said. “We'd have to have an interim commissioner.”

The source said the league presidents do not believe Beebe responded with adequate leadership to Nebraska's and Texas A&M's frustration. The Big 12 has lost three members in the last 15 months, and “the relationships were so bad (with) the commissioner,” the source said.

The frustrations on the part of Nebraska and Texas A&M alluded to here stem largely from Texas and its Longhorn Network, the Texas-only channel that had planned to feature high school games involving Texas recruits and at least one Big 12 conference football game. The high school programming plan was walked back after an outpouring of concern about the idea, but the damage was already done.

If the report is true, Dan Beebe is in a world of trouble. While the Big 12 could probably survive without the four teams rumored to be en route to the theoretical Pac-16 -- most likely in a merger with the suddenly fractured Big East -- it probably doesn't need to continue keeping a commissioner that such a high-profile member wanted gone. Anybody who ever said "no news is bad news" never had to keep a conference together, after all, and there aren't too many BCS-level schools that would be interested in joining up with a commissioner with such a poisoned reputation.

On the other hand, Beebe now has the opportunity to save the Big 12 a second time, this time by martyring his office in the name of the greater good of the conference. Of course, the downside to that plan is it leaves Beebe without a job at the Big 12, which would substantially reduce his interest in the welfare of the embattled conference.

Oklahoma has not confirmed Tramel's report at this point, and Beebe has not issued a comment about the situation yet either. In lieu of either, then, we advise that you start up "End of the Road" by Boyz II Men for the background, load up the Fake Dan Beebe twitter feed, and enjoy both simultaneously.

LOL,,,,, storybook program?!?!?!?! I love it!  I suppose when you look up storybook program in the dictionary it shows a picture of Texas and all their blue chip players and those SWC championships beating the likes of SMU, Baylor, Houston, A&M, TCU, Tech and Arkansas and their 3 Big 12 Championships and their 4 total national championships,,,,, All those resources ad only 4 national titles,,, really?!?  Texas has a good run in the 60's and again, right before they started to fire mack Brown in 2005 they got hot again,,, dont think we forgot that you almost fired your winningest coach ever in late 2004.  If other conferences want the horns at all it only stems from the amount of TV's that they bring to the equasion because it certainly isnt because they are easy to get along with or they storybook program...  If its a storybook program they want they can can just go get OU

OU and OSU will always have the Pac 12 in thier back pocket,,,, lets face it,,, with all the conferences going to 14 or 16 teams,,, who is the PAc 12 going to get unless they get the Oklahoma or Texas schools???? who?  there is no one else. Boise, Colorado St, San Jose St, San Diego St,, no ,,,,, BYU cant play in the Pac 12 because Cal would never vote for them.  Its their only option for expansion.  OU wants to keep the big 12 because they like to beat Texas, and they would prefer a conference that is geographically centered around them,,,, we get the conference tournaments almost every year due to our location,,, that generates millions of tax dollars for OKC, but when push comes to shove we can go to the PAC 14 with or without the horns, and once more if the horns do go west with us,,, they will have to do so with their hats in their hands, because Larry Scott is not Dan Beebe,, he will not allow texas to act like an imbecile like they have in the past.

It must really suck to be a member of the Big Tex league right now, especially if you're a fan of a team located outside of Austin. Texas is not going to share revenue and you're not going to be able to do anything about it lest they threaten to leave and relegate you to the MWC or Sunbelt. You might as well begin to practice genuflection because Texas will have you on your knees on a regular basis!

Everything is in flux right now.  Missouri (maybe) to the SEC, the Pac-12 is staying pat and don't want the drama of OU-UT (and who can blame them?), the Big East is floundering, the ACC expanding - it's all crazy.

But what about Kansas, Kansas State and Iowa State?  Where will they end up after this season?

If OU stays in the Big XII, thereby bringing Okie State with them, they take KU, KSU and ISU, the Big XII could revert back to the Big 8 and bring in Baylor, Texas Tech and maybe one or two of the Dakota schools.  Talk about a Midwest conference!  All in the same time zone!

I'm tired of hearing saying it's Texas' fault because of their network.A&M was asked to be a part of the net work and turned it down.So they went crying like a whipped dog with their tail between their logs and want to blame it on Texas.Texas is who they are because they have a story book program  that was placed upon them by the media. Its not their fault that people are naieve and believe what the media says.Just put down the hateraide and see what plays out in the conference re-alignment game.

Typical, OU has to clean up another Texas mess.  If you gave every Texan an enema you could hide the entire state in a shoe box.  The Pac 12 is in close dealings with OU and I believe that while OU would like to preserve the Big 12, they have the ability to go to the Pac12 at their convienence but it sure would be nice to go as a 4some but if they do it would be even better if the horns could get knocked down a peg or 2,,,, thats where Larry Scott comes in and says no to the bunch for reasons of the LHN,,,, The ulimatum is on the horns to compromise or go their own way.  OU (and OSU on a smaller scale) is a known comoddity, anyone who says different is just talking to hear their head rattle.  We are not concerned about conference realignment currently, we are concerned with winning an 8th national title and an 8th big 12 title, 2 subjects the horns know nothing about.  Mayby if the horns go independent they can win thier own conference 8 out of 13 years,,,,mayby.
