Garrett Gilbert is leaving Texas

This news does not come as much of a surprise considering that Garrett Gilbert lost his job as the starting quarterback job at Texas, and his season is now over thanks to shoulder surgery, but according to Suzanne Halliburton of the Austin American-Statesman, Gilbert is leaving Texas.



As I said already, this is one of the least surprising developments of all time. It's obvious that Gilbert is out of chances at Texas, as he's behind both David Ash and Case McCoy on the depth chart, and if he were to stay at Texas he'd spend the rest of his career on the sidelines. Instead he's decided he'd rather look elsewhere so he can get a chance to play and live up the the expectations that accompanied him when he first came to Austin.

A possible destination for Gilbert would be at SMU, as PonyPride.com reported on Wednesday that Gilbert was spotted at SMU practice.

Envy foments resentments and internal stresses, my friend.  I recommend against it. You can thank me later for my advisory benevolence.

As for Gilbert Grape, yes, he should go to a school whose program better fits his capabilities.  Unfortunately, KinderCare won't admit him, given his size and physiological age.  Meanwhile, for the betterment of the Whorns as a team, Mackie-poo should make a firm commitment either to David Ash-whipped or McBoy the Younger.  Indecisiveness always get him in trouble, sooner or later.  Where is Will Muschamp anyway?

He could be a god if he went out west somewhere like Nevada, Fresno State, Hawaii, UCLA, Arizona, etc.  Why not be an immediate starter and be worshiped at the same time?

I always thought UT was a bad fit for this kid from the beginning.  He played at Lake Travis and like Graham Harrell at Ennis broke all sorts of passing records in a pass-happy spread offense.  I always thought he should've gone to a place like Tech, or better yet SMU now with June Jones (since Mike Leach is not at Tech anymore). 

This kid still has a lot of potential, he just picked the wrong school.

Finally, some sanity. Maybe this kid isnt up to UT football QB standards, but damn, he's what 18-20 yrs old. Doesnt mean hes a freakin serial killer. Give the kid a break. I hope he does well and develops.

Gilbert, Texas Tech is just down the road (ok, all the way across the state) and they have a pretty good history of taking average quarterbacks and putting them in an opportunity to succeed.
