Report: San Diego State looking for Big 12 invite

Memphis has been looking for an invitation to the SEC (really) but they're not the only program looking to take a big step up in competition.

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, San Diego State is all but begging for an invite to the Big 12. Athletic director Jim Sterk has passed information about the school and surrounding television market to Big 12 officials, including interim commissioner Chuck Neinas.

“We’ve been proactive as far as getting information out and just making sure their folks know what a valuable commodity San Diego State is,” Sterk told the Union-Tribune. “We’ve been able to show how well we capture the San Diego television market in the last couple of years and have a program that’s really on the rise and have a lot of things going for it. We’re a member of the Mountain West Conference, and we think it’s a very good conference. But if things realign, you never know how the sands are moving.”

The Big 12 officially welcomed TCU to the league on Monday, adding the school in the wake of Texas A&M's departure to the SEC in 2012. The league may continue to expand, possibly back to 12 members, or choose to remain at 10. Leaders are still waiting on a decision from Missouri, which is mulling their conference affiliation options and could choose to follow the Aggies to the SEC.

BYU, Louisville and West Virginia are the schools frequently brought up if the Big 12 is to expand again but Sterk wanted to make officials aware that San Diego State is just as close geographically to schools such as Texas as BYU is.

“If they look west, who knows what happens?” Sterk said.

Neinas is familiar with the school, having advised former athletic director Jeff Schemmel to hire football coach Rocky Long in 2006 as part of his consulting business.

I think San Diego State to the Big 12 is nothing more than a pipe dream.

To nordic07:

Come on, man. You can reply to a post without all the personal stereotypes and insults. What's with the moooo moooo? I live in Florida now, by way of Georgia and Arizona. But I grew up in Oklahoma and I did/do have relative that live on a farm. And I have helped with harvests. But I would suggest to you that most Oklahomans have probably never even touched a cow, so why are you stereotyping them with moooo moooo, sheep, and making allusions to the Grapes of Wrath? Come on, amateur, you are only showing your ignorance there. Make your point without the insults.

I am an Oklahoma State fan and I have been supporting San Diego State admission in many of my blogs for some time. I think they would make a great fit, especially considering their past affiliation with the conference. But being a native Oklahoman, I did not appreciate your ignorance-based stereotypes.

SDSU had almost 58,000 people at the Washington State game. We had over 44,000 at the TCU game. San Diego does have professional football and baseball but they are coming out for this team....

It is amazing....people like you that so love Oklahoma now live in San Diego? Why? You can't go out and support the Division 1 college football team of the town you now live in. As a native San Diegan, why is always people like you moving to our city. You sound like a real classy guy. The stadium just doesn't meet your standards? Yeah, I just bet you are making a million dollars a year and living on the beach in La Jolla. Hey dolt, we beat the only PAC 12 team we played this year. In case you haven't noticed this is not the same team of 3-4 years ago. If Ryan had even an average game, we beat both Michigan and TCU. Isn't it time for you to go ride some sheep? Baaaaaa Baaaaaaa.  Grapes of Wrath? Try going to a game before you open your ignorant yap! SDSU will be 9-3 at the end of the regular season. You are the kind of clown that thinks the MWC can't hang with the rest of the country. Let's see....TCU took the Rose Bowl and should have been the National Champions last year. Boise State is number 4 or 5 in the country and would kick OU's butt given the opportunity. Kellen Moore is the best QB in the country. Luck is not even close to being the passer or leader Kellen has become. When you know learn something about football then come on back. I am willing to wager a lot of money, you have NEVER played a down of Division 1 football...probably not even high school football. Let me make you feel at home....MOOOO MOOOOOO

I have to concur.  I live in the Boise Area but periodically visit family in San Diego and I certainly don't see people running around with SDSU attire all over the place down there.  You see some but it's definitely not like it is up here when Boise State has a game on, all the cars with pennants flying, every other person decked out in blue and orange.  I definitely see more chargers attire down in San Diego than anything else (as far as football is concerned).

Of course people run around Boise wearing Broncos gear. Thats the only team you got up there. If I take a day trip up to LA I'll see more Raider gear than UCLA or USC and the Raiders dont even play there. But that still doesnt mean that the college teams dont have local fan support.

"that would never work, i live in san diego and am a OU fan, unfortunately san diego state gets no love, can't remember the last time i watched a state game on TV or at the old stadium we have here. Most people are charger fans and padres fans, unless they build a new stadium and new facilities and getting the word out there with advertising and all this would never work."

Pac 10 (12?) especially UCLA and USC will never allow SDSU to join.  Those schools recruit in San Diego and the only edge they have is to tell recruits they will have more TV time.  What 18 year old kid wants to live in downtown LA when he can live in the San Diego paradise?  In spite of that SDSU has had competitive teams and has sent many many players to the NFL.  The Big 12 would give them a recruiting boost and they would become a competitive team in the Big 12.

San Diego fans just need a little hope to lend their support.  We saw it in basketball last year.  SDSU regularly drew 40K plus to football games 40 years ago in the years of Air Coryell.  They drew 44K to the TCU game last week.  Keeping a few more of the top San Diego recruits in town will be all that it takes.

"split the country up into the 4 time zone's with 4 conferencs and let the best team win!"

Wouldn't work .... it makes to much sense, and if there is anything the NCAA will fight with all of its might, it is common sense.
