Big Ten suspends MSU DE Gholston for one game

In the third quarter of Michigan State's 28-14 victory over Michigan last Saturday, MSU star defensive end Will Gholston was seen throwing a punch at Michigan lineman Taylor Lewan, connecting somewhere around Lewan's neck or lower face mask. The incident drew a 15-yard penalty against Gholston, but he wasn't ejected, and Mark Dantonio left him in the game for the rest of the afternoon. Similarly, Dantonio left Gholston atop the Spartan depth chart this week heading into a critical battle with Wisconsin.

The Big Ten wasn't exactly impressed with Dantonio's approach to discipline, it seems, because the conference announced today that Gholston would be suspended for one game after the incident:

The Big Ten determined that Gholston’s actions at the end of the third quarter of the Michigan contest violated Big Ten Conference Agreement 10.01.1.A.1 - “Striking or attempting to strike or otherwise physically abusing an official, opposing coach, spectator or athlete.” The conference office also publicly reprimanded Gholston for his actions.

The Big Ten Sportslike Conduct Agreement states that “It shall be the responsibility of each member university to ensure that all of its students and all individuals employed by or directly associated with it comport themselves in a sportslike manner when representing their university, especially at intercollegiate athletic contests.”

After the Michigan-MSU game, we groused that Mark Dantonio's reputation as a disciplinarian didn't match his record, and that his stated policy of "zero tolerance" has now become more of a running gag than an actual aspect of Dantonio's approach to running his team. This latest move by Dantonio -- to figuratively punt on suspending a player who punched an opponent on the field of play, and make the Big Ten take care of it -- sounds much more like a coach concerned with winning the next game than one willing to take discipline seriously.

And hey, if Dantonio wants to leave player suspensions up to the conference, that's fine; that's exactly why the Big Ten has this policy in place. But it still doesn't paint MSU's program in a positive light when it comes to keeping the Spartans on the straight and narrow path.

Dantonio doesn't care

Dantonio has to be extremely happy that his team got lucky against Wiscy.  It gets him that much closer to his dream job in Columbus.  MSU is in a no-win situation.  If they are mediocre, they are unmasked as Same Ol Sparty.  If they continue their almost two-season stretch of every possible break going their way, they will lose their coach because he will look like a good hire in Columbus.

Sparty: NOOOOOO.

Dantonio truly embraces the win at all costs mantra he learned during his days in Columbus. If Gholston hadn't have been caught so red handed on camera the most he would have gotten from Dantonio is a pat on the back. As long as the facade of discipline is maintained the rest doesn't really matter; that seems to be the philosophy of Mr Dantonio. Regardless of the words that come out of his mouth, he has a very documented track record of levying little to no punishment for players offenses. I still don't understand how Glenn Winston was ever allowed back on the Michigan State campus, much less suit up and touch a football.

I was a little surprised that Dantonio didn't suspend the kid himself, until I learned that Dantonio is a friend and disciple of Tressell.  Birds of a feather.  If the Big Ten really wanted to do something, they should have suspended this hoodlum for 3-4 games and said something like, next time MSU and other B10 schools, take care of your problems yourself so we don't have to.  Otherwise, the punishments will be worse.  I don't really care for Wisconsin either, but I hope they roll Sparty by 40 after this incident.

Congrats to MSU for their win last Saturday. They are a very good team and proved they were better.

However, MSU fans need to take it easy and calm down. You should be proud of your team for winning 4 in a row. It is both a testiment to the quality program MSU has built and the poor play at Michigan these past four years. But, remember before that when Michigan won something like 10 of 12? To say that you will enjoy beating us for another decade is short sighted. Michigan will be back to a powerhouse in this conference. Why? Because its Michigan and the Big 10 needs it to happen. We've been down, but that will change and we will be back. So, enjoy the victories, guys, because it is deserved, but easy on the claims of world dominance.

Remember:

Michigan: 42 Big 10 championships, last championship 2004, last national championship 1997, Paul Bunyan Trophy: 67-31-5. All-Time Record: 890–309–36

Michigan State: 7 Big 10 championships, last championship 2010 (last outright...1987), last national championship 1966. Paul Bunyan Trophy: 31-67-5. All-Time Record: 627–426–44

Amen to the above comment. MSU says "all the right things" after the suspension was announced but MarkDan does not set a good example of sportsmanship. His players can do about anything & allows them back on the field as if playing is a right. I do like how UM took the high road on this. Not making comments about Gholston's play. UM was in-deed the lesser of the two teams but MSU took it to a new low--they could have easily won without being out of control.

As far as what is "really happening", Michigan was terrible under Rich Rodriguez, that's no secret.  So MSU fans get to hang their hat on beating three very bad Michigan squads, and maybe one good one, depending on how UM finished this season.
Who cares why you are bad? Michigan hired RichRod and now you want to blame him for the condition you're in. State has mean thugs and they took our lunch money. Everyone is at fault except Michigan. Get tough, get better or go home and cry. I'll enjoy whipping your asses for the next ten years, whether you're good bad or indifferent!

Big Ten suspends MSU DE Gholston for one game

This character Mark Dantonio is nothing more then a disciple of Ohio State who sat back did nothing about the unsportmen like conduct of his players waited for the Big 10 to step in. His reason he verbally says he hates Michigan. it tells you something about what MSU has for a football coach. My daughter is a graduate of MSU but im ashamed to say it. it appears Dantonio is putting alot of low-lifes on that team. Im surprised Brady Hoke didn't go over and punch Dantonio right in the face!

You crack me up. I would have guessed you were no older than 13 based on you grammer and punctuation.

Not sure who a punch on the field and be compared with players taking, money, cars and benefits...but your entitled to an opinion. Coach D should have suspended Gholston before the Big Ten did, but making this out to be more than a personal foul is laughable. People are acting like this is something that never happens on the field of play, but it actually happens in just about every game. During this same contest a Michigan player kicked an MSU defender in the head (intentionally) after the play when he was on the ground, but on penalty was called and nobody seems the think he (Hemingway) did anything wrong. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and sometimes so is reason.
