The Trojan career of USC sophomore running back Dillon Baxter is hanging by a thread--if it's not finished already.

Lane Kiffin finally addressed Baxter's absence from the traveling roster for the team's win over Notre Dame Tuesday morning, confirming in a statement on the Trojan website that Baxter "will not be part of our football program" for at least the remainder of the season.

"The decision has been made for Dillon Baxter to focus on his academics," Kiffin said. "[W]e will continue to support him with our academic services department. There will be no further comment regarding this from me or any member of our program."

Though the statement would seem to leave the door open for Baxter's potential return, few seem to expect it after the former blue-chip recruit struggled mightily to find playing time in the Trojans' first seven games. For the season, Baxter has only nine carries for 29 yards and is well behind Marc Tyler and Curtis McNeal on the depth chart.

Baxter has also been something of an off-field distraction during the 2011 season, with his parents requesting (and receiving) a meeting with Kiffin to discuss his lack of playing time in the season opener and his absence from the Notre Dame game reportedly due to his decision to remain with his girlfriend as she gave birth.

Whatever the issues between Kiffin and Baxter -- or Baxter and his grades -- it seems highly likely that if the San Diego product is to ever fulfill his ample recruiting hype, he'll have to do it somewhere other than USC. The consensus five-star seemed poised for stardom after Kiffin offered him rave reviews in spring camp 2010, a camp in which he did this just days after graduating high school:

But barring an impressive career rehabilitation, that play will be as close as Baxter ever gets to stardom for the Trojans.

USC's booted Baxter to 'focus on academics'

Doesn't go to class; fathers a bastard child; recruited by an alleged institution of higher learning as a ringer for the football team but can't even manage that much masquerade, parents run interference for their spoiled brat.  This guy is a poster child for what's wrong with college athletics in the US of A.

Men of Troy - Lucky for you Dillon Baxter is over 18 because they have laws against grown men (I assume you are grown) penning open love letters to boys on the internet. Isn't it time for your NAMBLA meeting, Chickenhawk?

Are you smoking that Cali medical mary jane?

You think UCLA has cornered the market on guys "graduating" who cannot read or write? Granted, UCLA does stand for the University of California for Lower Achievers, but seriously? Look in South Central. One of their most famous "graduates" cannor read nor write either. He's currently sitting in a Nevada prison...

Apparently you have the same mentality!

Are you freaking kidding me.  If you were a coach, PARENT or a teacher, you would be bad for them.  You need to teach thesde kids that being mature, and that they need to be accountable for what they do is vwry important.

Again...don't put yourself in the profile I've seen so many times of Black kids who waste their talent.  There are are white kids, and hispanics...sure.  Dude get your head out of your butt!!!!

Dillon Baxter, if you look at these blogs read this.  You are blowing it.  You have the opportunity to play for one of the greatest football schools ever.  They use to call SC' runningback U'.  Get you head out of your backside, wake up and stop being a child.  It's time to be a man.  Lane Kiffin wants players who LOVE USC...Trojan ball, who want only to play at SC.

If you have personal stuff going on, they are there for you.  Teammates coaches....they want you to succeed.  Usc them all for what they can offer you.  You have no idea.  Don't pay attenion to the morons on this blog, who say go to UCLA, don't do it.  They don't deserve you.  Now, don't head to arrogant...oyu have all the talent, but don't ever forget this the rest of your life.  What youput into it, youwill get out of it.

You are in the dog house,  Deal with it, get out of it and help SC...Marc Tyler is leaving next year, take the challenge and beat out whoever is in your way.  You have the talent to be a legend...I will say you have the moves of number 33..Marcus Allen.  I'm sure he would say the same thing.  Do you have the drive?  That's up to you.

If you fail it's your fault.  I say this because you have the talent...I have witnessed so ,many times freinds of mine who habt the talent and got scholaships, but they didn't make it because they didn't want to.  They didn't want to do what was necessary.  Sure, you might go somewhere else, and do ok.  Then you get drafted, but not as a top guy.  You go from place to place, not as a fixture, like Marcus Allen at the Raiders...they missed him when he left.

Go to Lane and beg for the chance to fight for your job!!!!

Fight on!!!!!

Baxter should have gone to UCLA because they have the special classes that would let a guy like this succeed. UCLA have had a bunch of guys that graduate that can't read or write.

seems like a lot of kids arent able to wait for things.  wait til after you have a good job to have a baby for instance.  wait to earn playing time on a team.  i know 1 sound like a square old conservative fuddy duddy.  i am actually pretty open minded and young and my politics are all over the place.   in terms of personal values though i am kinda the old school type.  seems a lot kids are just not getting much in the way of good values from their folks.  some of the world revolves around me b/c i am superstar attitude i suspect also comes from shows like mtv cribs, pimp my ride, entourage, and all that baloney.

sounds like his parents should be more concerned with his grades than lack of p.t.   good for kiffin.  coaches are supposed to prepare boys to becomes adults, not just to prepare players for the pros.  dissapointing his folks seem to be feading into his prima dona mentality.

SC needs scholarships for student-athletes that can contribute on the football field now. With the scholarship reduction penalty getting ready to kick in SC can not waste one single scholarship. All 15 student-athletes coming in the next 3 years must be able to play right away. Now we know that's not going to happen with every kid coming in but for the next 3 years no more bringing in a kid with the thought process of him sitting on the bench for a couple years, learning and then playing. Baxter was behind a converted WR at running back and not playing at all. Time to free up the scholarship for kid and position of need.
