It's been a rough week for Notre Dame and Brian Kelly. Following Notre Dame's loss to USC last weekend, amidst a barrage of USC players saying that the Irish quit, Kelly promised that this week would not be fun for his players. The Irish held long practices all week, but on Thursday Kelly made some comments that bothered his players more than the extra work.

"You can see the players that I recruited here," Kelly said on Thursday after practice. "You know who they are. We've had one class … that I've had my hand on. The other guys here are coming along. But it's a process. It can't happen overnight. They're getting there. We're making good progress."

As you'd expect, the players on the Notre Dame roster who Kelly didn't recruit didn't exactly enjoy hearing these comments, and even took to Twitter to vent. All of the tweets have since been deleted, but players like Trevor Robinson, Kapron Lewis-Moore and Manti Te'o tweeted about Kelly's remarks.

Te'o tweeted "playin for my bros and that's it!!!"

Well, on Friday players reportedly addressed Kelly about his comments in an effort to clear the air, and Kelly apologized to his players for the remarks.

Whether there are still some tension between the players and their coach remains to be seen, but the best way to heal any divide in the locker room would probably be a win against Navy on Saturday afternoon.

Brian Kelly apologizes to his players

Kelly's performance during the last quarter against USC was not becoming of a big time coach. He needs to apologize for his actions in this game but also for his words to the players. He is a coach with a great deal of success but his demand last year that the young man who died because he insisted that a practice get filmed is a tragedy that Kelly's ego should have prevented. I am surprised he was not charged with manslaughter. This year he started off rough with turnovers in the first game but he was unable to impress upon his players the need to take care of the ball. Perhaps he should have the players concentrate on the play at hand and quit beiing so demanding they follow his dictates. Maybe if they were told to enjoy themselves they would improve.

Gem of a coach.

Brian "If I'm Down By Two Scores With Three Minutes Left I Won't Even Try To Win" Kelly is sure to return ND to glory.

Brian Kelly apologizes to his players

This is a man who is partially responsible for the death of a student!!!  Do you really think he cares about hurting players' feelings???  Notre Dame took him because he matched the arrogant "Holyier than thou" attitidue of the university and fans, they just didn't think he'd turn that attitude towards the institution.

PeteND: Concur. Michaelcollins apparently does not realize USC has not erelied on "student body left/student body right" since John Robinson's second HC period.

Brian Kelly apologizes to his players

Well Brian Kelly I'm sure was disappointed with their performance against USC. Let's not kid ourselves here, USC is a big game on Notre Dame's schedule, and they were beaten after being on a four game winning streak. USC players say they quit, and it shows in the score. I'm sorry, I've read all of what Kelly said, and he they weren't out of line. You want to see out of line just look up Jim Mora and then look to what Kelly said, and you'll see he said pretty tame stuff. He only apologized to players for merely not mentioning them. It was resolved though because they came back and destroyed Navy. Their scehdule is pretty smooth up until the end against Stanford.

Brian Kelly apologizes to his players

Good grief after a off week, Kelly gets out coached, badly, by Lane Kiflin and he blames the players. His defense was not in position on student body left or right and on counter treys, USC's bread and butter for ever. The coach blamed the players, and he did not do this to fire them up, it was an excuse for why his team was out performed, because I don't have my players. Kelly's comments were out of line for an NFL coach not to mention a college coach who is at the University of Notre Dame where we don't just win, we win with dignity and style and we don't have to cheat to win like, well name names if you think Kelly was right.

Brian Kelly apologizes to his players

I don't have a dog in this fight, but what's with all the people on here claiming these comments are justified for ND losing against USC last weekend.  Nowhere is that comment did it even hint that last weekend was a problem.  Anyone who reads that comment is going to think exactly what I thought, except for the Irish fans both loving and hating Kelly on these boards.  Kelly is basically saying all of his FRESHMAN recruits, which are primarily redshirted, are better than all of the seniors, juniors, and sophmores that he didn't recruit.  You can think what you want but that's exactly what his comment said and unless you know the guy personally, don't get on here and justify what he said by claiming he meant this or that.  All of his players knew what he said just like the rest of us.

Brian Kelly apologizes to his players

People keep getting the panties in a wad because Kelly says what he is thinking instead of the BS coach talk. I think this team needed to get called out in public because nothing else was working. They were making bush league mistakes over and over again and needed a slap across the face to get them fired up and motived.

After today's performance againts Navy I would say they got the message. (except for Reese who is just apparently addicted to turnovers.)

I am glad he is the coach at Notre Dame is is changing the attitude within the program.

Character is built by family well before they attend college to play football.  Just recruiting athletes doesn't mean they have the aptitude to be good upstanding citizens or human beings.  That stuff starts at home early in life; not the coaches fault these kids feel entitled or need to be told how great they are.  High School - big fish small pond.  College - just another fish.
