Mike Leach interested in Ole Miss job

In his post on Houston Nutt's firing at Ole Miss on Monday, our own Jerry Hinnen said that Mike Leach will "be along any minute to mention how much he'd love a shot at coaching in the SEC." Well, that minute is now.

On Tuesday Mike Leach told The Commercial Appeal that if Ole Miss is interested in hiring him to replace Nutt, he isn't hard to find.

“I haven’t heard from anybody, but I’m not too hard to find,” Leach told the paper. “It’s a great job. I’m sure the (Ole Miss) administration has a certain individual it is looking for, and I’m sure they’ll find the right guy.”

As for whether or not Leach will be a target or get the job, nobody knows.

The fact of the matter is that anytime an opening is created at a program these days, Leach's name is mentioned as a replacement. Just recently he was mentioned as a candidate at Tulane, his name has come up in rumors about Arizona, and he was mentioned at places like Miami and Maryland last season as well.

He's yet to be hired anywhere, and as long as he has his current lawsuit against his former employer Texas Tech, the odds are he won't be on the sidelines anywhere. Which is a shame. Leach is one of my favorite coaches in the sport, along with one of the best, and this sport is just better off when he's a part of it.

"Leach is a good coach. He made a mistake." - JustinC47

But it doesn't seem he's anywhere close to admitting he made any mistake: he's proceeding with his lawsuit against his former employer for doing what they were entitled to do under the terms of the agreement h emade with them.

Mike Leach is an arrogant cry-baby dope.

You mean like Tech's most recently matriculated starting QB, Graham Harrell? Last I heard he was warming a bench in Canada; he'll be saying "Would you like paper or plastic?" before you know it.

And what's "ironic" about firing him the day before he was to earn $500K?

His  agreement with Texas Tech was that he'd be entitled to that money if Tech still wanted him to be the coach going forward from the thirtieth; apparently Tech didn't want him around after that date so they fired him the day before, obviating the obligation to pay him anything further. That money was a kind of bonus for him to work in the future. What's so difficult for him or anyone else to understand that he's not entitled to any money he hasn't already been paid? Apparently he thought he was the only one who could decide if he would be free to find other employment after the thirtieth. Looks like he thought wrong.

His lawsuit's a waste of time and money - with Leach's being a lawyer you'd think he'd've figured that out by now. And it's not like he has a lot of money to throw at this - he hasn't worked since he was fired. It's not like new schools are falling over themselves to hire him.

Rosey Bowl, Leach didn't file the lawsuit against Tech before they fired him he filed an injunction that would allow him to coach in the Alamo Bowl. Tech wanted Leach to apologize in writing to James by the 28th of December which Leach refused to do so Tech fired him on the 30th for insubordination and ironically this was the day before they were to pay him the 800k.

Duke, good post, however, given enough time Coach Leach will attract the really good QB's and WR's., even at Ole Miss.... I would venture to say that he would be successful just about anywhere he went, as I said, the QB's and WR's would be lining up to sign..  I hope he finds something soon, I really love to see his teams play... If he, June Jones, and Halgorsen were to coach a team together as OC's,  hooo, they would score 120 points per game, of course they would give up 119...  Come on Coach, put away the legal crappie and get back to coaching...

Mike Leach...I had to think for a minute to place the name.  Whatever happened to all that hoopla?  It just died away after the media quit covering it.  As did Leach.  He need to take the "Bobby Knight" route back.  Go to New Mexico (a good fit) and forget about the SEC for now.  He would not go over well in Oxford anyway.  They are much too refined in that neighborhood to put up with such a crass fellow.  Tech was lucky to get a good coach after Auburn messed up and let him go, but certain coaches fit in better in certain conferences.  Tommy belongs in the SEC and Mike belong in a mid-major Mountain West-type school.  I don't think anyone is happy with where they are now.Tech is lucky they beat Oklahoma or they might be getting replaced by Louisville the way these conferences are being shuffled around.  I supported Leach all the way against TT and Adam James IS a cry baby wuss.  But the question here I think is not whether Leach deserves a job, but whether the right fit is Ole Miss.  It is not a good fit.

ANY employee (that would be Mike Leach) that brings suit against their employer (that would be Texas Tech) should expect to get fired.  Leach brought suit against Tech BEFORE he was fired (remember during the week before his termination, he refused to follow TT's directive re: Adam James treatment and filed an injunction).

He may be a good coach, but he's poison.  He thought he was bigger than Tech.  Who need that?

He should hold out for the Georgia job when Richt is fired. More talent, better chance to win and run his wide open offense.

Hmm, maybe he should hold out for the Florida job...

It would be nice to see Coach Leach get the Ole Miss job.  It would bring the SEC into the 21st Century and out of caveman football.  Would be nice to see some exciting offense instead of "Bore of the Century" games....  Bring it on Ole Miss, get some footballs and make your program something for a change...

I doubt it, but I read the article anyway

I bet that if he went away qietly, instead of filing a lawsuit against Tech, he'd have a job already.  It's odd that players are given second chances after major mistakes (Donte Stallworth, Maurice Clarett, etc.) but a very good coach, after a much lesser infraction, is left to wonder whether he will get another shot.  I'm sure there's an AD out there willing to take a chance, someday. If it's Ole Miss, then they will earn at least one more fan.
