As the fourth-oldest college football award, the Walter Camp Player of the Year award is considered one of the most prestigious individual honors in the game. The award is named for Walter Camp, who is considered by many to be "The Father of American Football." Although the criteria for the Player of the Year award is similar to the Heisman Trophy, the races have had different winners for three of the last four seasons. Only Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith and last year's winner, Cam Newton, have pulled in both honors in the last half decade.

On Wednesday, the Walter Camp Football Foundation announced the 15 "Semifinalists" for the 2011 Player of the Year Award. The group is headlined by Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck and Oregon running back LaMichael James, both finalists for the 2010 award.

The list of fifteen will be narrowed to five finalists on Wednesday, November 30. The award will be presented on Thursday, December 6.

2011 Walter Camp Player of the Year Semifinalists

Matt Barkley, Junior, QB, USC
Justin Blackmon, Junior, WR, Oklahoma State
Morris Claiborne, Junior, DB, LSU
LaMichael James, Junior, RB, Oregon
Robert Griffin III, Senior, QB, Baylor

I wish someone with clout would pick up Klein's cause. The guy is amazing. Okie State and Texas A&M both new who was going to carry the ball and neither one could stop him. When you think you have him figured out he "throws" it for TD's.

I never said James shouldnt be on it....I simply said Wilson who is the leading rusher in FBS and Klein who sould be (if not for his team) a heisman finalist!! He has more rushing Tds than anyone and hes a QB!!

Nobody cares about this stupid "Heisman Trophy Runner-Up" Award ~ Chip Patterson, once again, writing nothing about something.

Lamichael deserves it.  The guy bounced back from a devastating injury, in which before it happened he was so far of ahead of the field in nearly all rushing statistics, he would have most certainly repeated as the Doak Walker Award for the nation's best back.  Since he missed 2.5 games, the rest caught up and Trent Richardson is easily the only competition, but LaMike is a game changer and a home run threat litterally EVERY TIME HE TOUCHES THE BALL.

I cannot believe that Collin Klein of Kansas State is left off the list. "MY GOSH"!!  The kid is the second leading scorer in the nation, having a great year both running and throwing, carrying the Cats on his back and probably a better person than football player. Eric Crouch won the Heisman with less.

Its great to see Chandler Harnish of NIU get to the semi-final list. He is the MAC Player of the year in my book. Most likely one of the most importnat player on his team on and off the field.

He holds almost all of NIUs offensive records and will break one of 2 more before the season is over. Truly one of the NCAAs best all around QBs in this year.

Wilson has 50 more carries then Lamichael James and Klein has over hundred. Give James just 20 more carries and he'll absolutely crush the leaders Wilson and Klein. Because that is why you mentioned both of the runningbacks because their both leading in their respective catagories.

I have alot of problems with this list...Montee Ball is the 1st mistake followed by David Wilson. Im a WVU fan and im confused why these 2 guys arent on the list. I dont even like VT but if u play like that and get left out someone should say something. Colin Klein as well!!! David Wilson leads the country in rushing and Klein has anyone that made this list even watched the guy play???? Disgusted

" Only Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith and last year's winner, Cam Newton, have pulled in both honors in the last half decade."

Okay, so 2 out of 5 have won both awards.  That is 40%.  That isn't exactly rare.
