Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel was arrested for drunk driving on Wednesday night, and now his future at Missouri is in question. Whether or not he survives this mistake in Columbia is up to the school, and we can't be sure how Missouri athletic director Mike Alden will respond. Though we do know Alden is taking this seriously.

"We hold ourselves to very high standards, and this is a very serious breach of those responsibilities," said Alden in a statement on the arrest Thursday. "We are gathering facts and will take action appropriately, and when those actions are determined, we will communicate them publicly.”

While he waits to find out what the school will do, I know what Pinkel should do. He should not allow himself to be on the sideline on Saturday against Texas Tech. Consider it a self-suspension.

Earlier this season linebacker Will Ebner and tight end Beau Brinkley were both suspended the first two games of the year after each was arrested for DWI over the summer.

Isn't it only fair that the man who handed down those suspensions to his players hold himself to the same standard?

Gary Pinkel had a spotless record at Missouri before this incident, and has been a great leader of the program, but that shouldn't excuse him from the same standard of behavior he's held his players to. In fact, that's exactly why not coaching this weekend would be the right thing for Pinkel to do.

"I have already met with our staff and communicated with our players and have apologized to them. I accept full responsibility for my actions and will abide by whatever course of action our leadership deems appropriate," said Pinkel in his statement.

Accepting full responsibility should start this Saturday, coach.

Gary Pinkel shouldn't coach this weekend

chjohnst2, this is what I posted to another genius such as your self:
Are you kidding me???!!!  No respect for the community he lives in for arresting a drunk driver??!!!  I hope you are joking because if you are not you are probably one of the most clueless individuals on the planet.  Sooo, you don't arrest someone who is driving drunk because they are a college football coach???  It's o.k. because he didn't KILL ANYONE??!!  You need to have a nice tall cup of shut the hell up and get a clue about the realities of the world.  You break the law you pay the price, end of story.  I guess in your world as long as no one is killed then it's no harm no foul.  The Police have a job to do and this officer did his job.  If anyone needs to be blamed for "hurting the football program" or "hurting the community" how about blaming the man who showed a complete lack of judgement and yet is supposed to be a "leader" and set an example.....Gary Pinkel!!

He is already to be suspended for this weekend and most likely the Kansas game as well.  Clearly someone over in Columbia has at least a small sense of ethics.  A "real cop" did his job and arrested him just like any other drunk citizen would have been arrested.  Being a coach does not make you above the law, you have to be a politician in washington for that.

Again, a media guy that doesn't know or even care to check all of the facts. Both of those players were suspended last year, 2010. In addition, not only were thet sited for DWI, they were both underage. Last I checked, Gary was at least old enough to have a drink. Yes, he had a lapse in judgement, but let's make sure we get all the facts straight before we start to hand down our own ideas of what the right thing to do is.

Gary Pinkel shouldn't coach this weekend

A real cop would have driven Pinkel home and ignored it.

Pinkel is not missing Senior Day or the final KU game.

I say he misses the Bowl game and nothing else.

You are entitled to your opinion of course but a more fitting punishment would be the Kansas Game and and potential bowl game.  Team should not suffer for the bad decision by coach, but the message would be just as strong to miss the last 2 games.  Maybe a dontation to the MADD or AA group as well and a PSA to further show how serious MU and Coach Pinkel feels about his actions.  Lets make it a deterrent and a lesson for all.
