Pinkel suspended one week without pay

Following his arrest on Wednesday night for suspicion of DWI, I wrote that Missouri head coach Gary Pinkel should not allow himself to coach his team against Texas Tech on Saturday. My reasoning for this was that it was only fair that a head coach who had suspended players for two games earlier this season for the same offense he committed be held to the same standards.

Well, according to our Missouri Rapid Reporter Dave Matter, that's exactly what Missouri is going to do.

Matter reports that Pinkel has been suspended for a week, including Saturday's game against Texas Tech, without pay. He'll be allowed to return to coaching on Thursday next week before Missouri's game against Kansas.

Defensive coordinator Dave Steckel will fill in as head coach in Pinkel's absence.

Matter also reports that Pinkel's weekly salary will be donated to the MU Wellness Resource Center, and that he will not receive a bowl bonus or social responsibility bonus this season. His salary will also be frozen for a year.

Athletic director Mike Alden also warned that any other arrests like this could result in Pinkel's termination.

"This has been an isolated incident and we do not expect any further issues such as this with coach Pinkel. But if in fact anything like that would ever happen again in the future, then further disciplinary action would be necessary in the future, up to and including termination," said Alden on Thursday evening.

Pinkel suspended one week without pay

Pinkel is a standup guy.....really like the way he accepted responsibility.

Anyone see the Texas Tech postgame conference?.....moving.  Steck and Yost are still behind Pinkel and so is the team.  If the guy was a drunk, I do not think that would be the case.  It's going to make the team stronger is what one player said.....adversity.

"Idiot" Mike Alden was also the guy in charge during the Quin Snyder fiasco. He's seen firsthand what happens when you allow the athletic department get out of control. I don't believe for a second that Pinkel is a serial drunk or that he'll do this again, but Alden had to publicly send the message that the Good Ole Boy Network won't save you at Mizzou. I think this has been blown up a bit because of all of the stuff going on in college sports right now, but I absolutely support the AD on this.

Pinkel suspended one week without pay

Should Missouri suspend Pinkel one week without pay? PSU did not stop paying their child molester. In the United States you are insistent until proven guilty unless you are in sports.

Pinkel suspended one week without pay

Pinkel deserves something, no doubt.  But the irony in this story is nimrod Mike Alden's threat that additional transgressions could result in Pinkel's termination.  Look, I'm not delusional enough to think that Mizzou is going to pummel most SEC schools in football.  However, I do think that Mizzou, while having a down year currently, has been at least good the last few years.  Not BCS bowl good, but 10 wins a season good.  You just don't turn your back on the coach that has been responsible for that success.  Conversely, idiot Mike Alden was responsible for bringing in Frank Haith as our new basketball coach, a guy who's never won anything, really didn't compete in the ACC when he coached Miami, and has brought a huge scandal with him.  If any of these guys are really on the chopping block, it should be Haith first, and Alden second, and both should be long gone before anyone even thinks of giving Pinkel the ax.

Pinkel suspended one week without pay

I have to laugh when I come on here and read someone say "Well according to my sources", which typically means...A) I just read the article above or B) The guys at the water cooler told me.  Kills me everytime!

According to my sources....Pinkel will be allowed to go home and watch Black Gold on the Discovery channel, and reruns of What not to Wear on TLC.  Also according to my sources....Missouri is leaving for the SEC.

Stick around, after round 3 of the Presidents Cup my sources will let you know who's leading?

On a serious should have known better.  Hope you learn your lesson and make something positive out of it.

Hate to see this by Pinkel as I think he would make the next great coach as Ohio State should the University decide not to stick with Luke Fickell.  Pinkel is hungry to win, he can recruit Ohio and is an excellent strategist.

Go figure that he'll be allowed back for the Kansas game. It would be a more appropriate punishment to make him miss a rivalry game;

LMAO at the silly Jayhawker.   Its not about you man.

I guarentee he would much rather miss the Kansas game than the Tech game.   First of all, the Tech game is Senior Day and all our seniors will be graduating if they haven't already.   That day is very important to Coach Pinkel, much more so than pounding the Jayhawks again.   Second, we probably could use a head coach against Tech.   To beat Kansas this year, we could probably put the headset on one of the Golden Girls and get the job done.

Big12: Problem with that reasoning has always been that we are demanding people make good decisions when they're in a bad state to make decisions. Part of Teres Minor's post was apt in that you gotta take the decision out of the person's hands rather than demand they do something they are not well equipped to do. In education that's called 'setting them up for success.' As for the retort that they should set that up ahead of time....well, that's not always possible either. Maybe he didn't plan to stay. Maybe someone new showed up and got him the proverbial 'one more.' Did you see the photo? Kudos to Pinkel for keeping his composure. This was no Nick Nolte shot. I don't want to make excuses for what could have turned out really serious. He'll get to pay his penalties, and he should. I'm just saying sometimes our anger is still kinda misdirected.
