REPORT: Urban Meyer to coach Ohio State next year

After weeks of rumors and speculation, the Columbus Dispatch is reporting the inevitable: former Florida head coach Urban Meyer will be Ohio State's next head coach. According to the report, Meyer's agreement is in principle, as contract details have not been arranged, but those are often not finalized until after a head coach has been officially hired.

Here's more from the Dispatch:

Two well-placed sources at Ohio State University confirmed for The Dispatch this morning that Urban Meyer will be announced next week as the next head football coach of the Buckeyes.

Also, the sources said that though interim head coach Luke Fickell has not been in the loop, he will be taken care of when or if Meyer accepts the job. In what capacity, the sources weren’t sure.

Meyer had been a head coach with Bowling Green and Utah for two years apiece before assuming the lead role at Florida in 2005. He led the Gators to two national championships (2006, 2008) before resigning due to health concerns after the 2010 season. Meyer made a similar resignation in 2009, vowing in December to coach the team's bowl game and leave aftwards, but he soon backed off that plan and coached the Gators as usual the next year.

Meyer is still only 47 (48 at the beginning of the 2012 football season), so youth would appear to be on his side. And yet, the health concerns that have dogged him at Florida have primarily been stress-related, so unless he takes a markedly different approach to coaching at Ohio State, it stands to reason that health may be a concern again. Of course, it also stands to reason that Ohio State is acutely aware of this fact and will adjust its expectations of Meyer accordingly. If both parties have agreed to an arrangement, the issue would almost certainly have to be resolved.

This report seems to refute Meyer's statement made Wednesday morning through ESPN, which read in full: "I have not been offered any job nor is there a deal in place. I plan on spending Thanksgiving with my family and will not comment on this any further." While it is generally agreed upon that there has been no formal offer of a job, to describe the situation as reported by the Dispatch as "no deal in place" strains the limits of linguistic semantics.

Ohio State is still awaiting word from the NCAA on its football program's fate; the Buckeyes have been rocked by allegations of widespread impermissible benefits to past and present players, and the program has seen the resignation of beloved head coach Jim Tressel, permanent ineligibility for starting quarterback Terrelle Pryor, 12 vacated wins, and over 30 games' worth of suspensions handed down to current Buckeyes this season (including 10 for star wideout DeVier Posey, who just returned to play last Saturday). There has been no indication from the NCAA when the Committee on Infractions will rule on the OSU program, though it is expected to happen well before the start of next season.

Therefore, you, as a Michigan fan, calling them the "Suckeyes" obviously doesnt make much sense does it?

When people call OSU the "Suckeyes", or call UM "scUM" they make themselves look like ignorant, classless haters before they even really say anything IMO. I generally dont even read anything further, because it is probably just an ignorant rant meant to get some attention and make others mad. I grew up in Michigan and love watching UofM sports, I have been to Columbus, OH 3 times to watch this great rivalry, and had a blast all 3 times. Michigan won 2 of those games, but after the games everybody I was with went out and had great times with Buckeye fans. Of course there was some trash-talking both ways, but none of these types of phrases ever came out. Mostly just talked about the game we had watched, and about the history of the rivalry.

And BTW OSUBUCKS!, I understand not liking it when someone says "suckeyes", but just because OSU has won 7 years in a row, doesnt mean OSU is good this season. Just sayin'. And Michigan still has the overall series (57-43-6), and they still have the longest win streak in the history of the rivalry, in fact, they won 9 straight once and they also won 7 straight twice,  while the Buckeyes are in the midst of there longest win streak, and I think the Buck stops here (pun intended)! Should be a good game, but I think Michigan has the better team and coaching this year. GO BLUE!!!

I love the morons who think that if you didn't go to a certain college your opinion should be lesser or you don’t know
what you are talking about. Guess what, I didn't go to Detroit Lion University nor did I go to Detroit Tigers University, yet I still know a lot about each
team and am able to root for them. I can post about them just like I can post about UofM and OSU. Sorry you got ripped and paid $60000 in tuition and have to justify it on message boards with your "superior" knowledge of a football team you DIDN'T PLAY FOR. You lose, good day sir(s)!

Class? The guy had over 30 arrests of his players during his short stint at Florida. He does not care what kind of people he recruits as long as they win. He did not go to ND because they would not bend the rules to get his thugs in and he knew he couldn't win w/o them. Urban Meyer is EXACTLY what is wrong with college athletics.

Urban Meyer would be a nice pick up for the boys in Columbus. I can't figure out his "health" problems that he had with the Gators which is kind of confusing that he would come back to the pressure so soon. He's from Toledo, coached at Bowling Green and loves the area, he'll bring some class and control to the Bucks. He also likes his players to graduate, he had 87% rate at Florida compared to the Bucks 62% - he always been a straight up guy. One thing I have noticed on these blogs between Michigan and Ohio haters is the radicals comments come from folks that didn't really go to the universities. Go figure and oh yeah Go Blue.

Meyer is a great coach and recruiter.  One must wonder if he has the fire in the belly to stay the course and get the job done.  His final 12 months at Florida were truly weird.  He was quitting because of his health and for the good of his family.  Oops, my bad, I'm staying.  Then Florida has by its standards a lackluster season and away he goes again.  Being head coach at Ohio State is demanding, not only based on wins and losses but it truly is a key public relations position for the university.  They need someone who loves the limelight, handles himself well and speaks with enthusiasm on the rubber chicken circuit.  There's no question that Urban Meyer can do the job.  But will he want to over the long haul.

If Meyer brings OSU a national championship like he did at Florida (twice) then if you add that to his success at BG and Utah, you have to consider the guy one of the greatest college coaches. The only knock that anyone can make on him (besides the arrest record at Florida) is that unlike the coaches that are typically considered great for establishing dynasties at individual schools Meyer's legacy will be short bursts of brilliance in many different places as he doesn't seem to like to stay in one place too long. That may hurt his legacy as fans and coaches equate longevity and greatness, but if he racks up a few more national championships I don't see how even that stops him from being in any "greatest college coaches" discussion.

As a Florida alumn who watched Meyer's years at Florida, it will be interesting to see if he can duplicate the success he had at Florida and prior with a new group of atheletes and a completely new set of coaches (all the guys he had with him at Florida and some even back through Utah and BG are gone - most are head coaches elsewhere now). If he can pull it off color me impressed....
