As has been expected since the moment USC finished their 50-0 demolition of the Bruins Saturday, UCLA has officially fired head coach Rick Neuheisel. Athletic director Dan Guerrero announced the decision Monday afternoon.

Neuheisel will, however, be allowed to coach the Bruins in Saturday's Pac-12 championship game at North division winner Oregon. Following the game, offensive coordinator Mike Johnson will become interim head coach and would presumably coach the Bruins in any potential bowl game, including the Rose Bowl. (Barring the massive upset in Eugene, the Bruins would need a waiver from the NCAA after finishing with a 6-7 overall record--a game short of the .500 mark normally required for postseason play.)

In his statement, Guerrero said that he had "great respect" for Neuheisel and "the manner in which he has run this program," but added that he felt the time had come to make a change.

"Decisions such as this one do not come without a great deal of heartache," he said. "However, it is apparent to me that a move was necessary at this time in order to give UCLA the best chance to enjoy the success that we all desire."

Neuhseisel leaves with just a 21-28 mark in his four seasons at the Bruin helm, one bowl appearance, and a 13-23 mark against the Pac-10/12.

Apparently, Guerrero neglected to let Neuheisel inform the team the decision had been made before the news became official. A tweet Monday from from junior tight end Joseph Fauria expressed his frustration:

Can't say this is a real surprise after a 50 to 0 thrashing by your arch rival that just tops off 4 years of no growth in the program but many firings of assistant coaches offered up as sacrifices. What is surprising to me is the stuffed shirts in the administration are going to allow the same person to search & recommend yet another coach after 10 years of failure. This AD originally fired a coach winning some 70% of his games and preceeded to hire two UCLA alumn buddies. Mind you, this AD had no experience in football as an AD when he was hired on. You don't think that didn't tell followers something to think about? So is it any wonder this last fired coach claimed UCLA cares more about its basketball program? Well duh....... we've been saying that for over 20 years now. The next head coach needs to be someone from outside the UCLA family and put an end to the laidback attitude that has been allowed to foster too many years.

When you don't have the financial resources needed to put together a competitive football program you can't expect to be competitive. Hence UCLA Alums and fans can either give me money to the program or expect to be USC and Oregon's b**** for years to come. Not what any of you want to hear but that's reality. Ask ASU.

I was lucky to have the opportunity to work with Rick when he was with the Baltimore Ravens. I wish him and his family all the best. PSU is looking for a head coach, Rick could do well there by improving the QB production and they already have a solid defense.

"Tricky Rick" has dismantled every program he has ever coached? Colorado, Washington and now UCLA..... hopefully his coaching days are done for good this time? (At least he leaves this program without massive NCAA sanctions, UCLA was smart enough to avoid that)

Another one bit the dust. Two of my favorite schools are not notre dame and ucla. They might hire anyone they would like. They might keep the same AD as they have. I am not political correct and could care less if the bruins or domers ever become competitive in any sport.

I enjoy beating them, and beating them badly. I want them to show up on the field and know that this is gonna be a beat down.

They had a good coach in Dorrell, but they decided they wanted Slicky Ricky.

What did that full page ad in the local newspapers say when he was hired? The Dynasty was over or something to that effect.

@Riomouse

SC like the horseshoe, we came there with a freshman quarterback and took the quarterback with all the tats who also drove a different car each year he was there and beat the buckeyes. What is a buckeye any way? Oh and all his other brothers that had the tats and were trading them for cars, money and other items of value.

We play in an arena we like and win in. You are not required to come there or any reason.

Now if there are Trojan alum, fans or students that would want to wish them well, that is ok by me.

I Like nothing better than to know that the two teams playing for the South Division champion was eaten by us.

Growing up I used to think the Rose Bowl was the game between the winner of the OSU-Michigan game and the USC-UCLA game. Been a long time since that was the case. I like Neuhseisel, but maybe he isn't a head coach. Or is it UCLA? None of the players coming in high school remember the glory days of UCLA - it's the age of what have you done lately. I hope UCLA can rise to its former glory. With Oregon, Stanford and Cal together up north, I don't want the PAC-12 championshp game to be "who gets to play USC this year".

Of the open coaching jobs, would UCLA be your top pick?

Only in athletics will you find a fired coach able to coach his last game. If I or anyone else were fired from their job...it's adio amigo, see ya!!!Hopefully a new coach will be found before spring practice. Neuheisel never had a solid coaching staff and disagreements abounded. Let's hope the new guy will do better and not embarass the program.

Sure hope UCLA gets another coach like Rick! Its wonderful to see UCLA suck so bad and USC not being able to play for anything! Arizona done got a good coach in Rod (he will stab them in the back in 3 short years) but does a good job none the less and if ASU is smart they will grab Mike Leach that will leave UCLA with less than quality coaches to chose from. They will be lucky to see a Rose Bowl foe the next 20 years. Kiffen does to good of a job with USC and the Arizona schools will get the good ones. Good Luck in the 2025 Rose Bowl if your lucky enough to get there before then.

The Football Monolopy in Los Angeles is Officially Over... THERE!  (Pointing East towards USC)

FIGHT ON!

As a Proud and loyal Trojan, I have to say that I look forward to the day when UCLA becomes competative.  I miss the days when the USC vs. UCLA Rivalry game actually had more than just the pride of victory on the line.  I hope to see the Pac-12 South decided in this game in the very near future.  I say Neuheisel was a dissapointment not just to Bruin fans but to USC fans who were hoping to see much more challenging games from the Bruins.

FIGHT ON! and hopefuly UCLA actually hires someone worthy of Los Angeles.
