It's been 45 years since Penn State last had to conduct a coaching search, so you'll have to excuse the school if it's a bit rusty when it comes to the process. So not surprisingly, it seems the school is approaching a type of safety in numbers approach to the process as acting athletic director Dave Joyner announced on Monday that the school has put together a six person search committee charged with finding a new head coach.

Joyner will head the committee and be joined by Linda Caldwell, Penn State’s faculty athletics representative; Charmelle Green, Associate AD and Senior Woman Administrator; John Nichols, an emeritus professor who chairs the Coalition on Intercollegiate Athletics; Ira Lubert, a member of the University’s Board of Trustees and Russ Rose, the Nittany Lions’ head volleyball coach.

Joyner said the committee will meet for the first time this week.

Former Penn State head coach Joe Paterno, who was first hired as head coach in 1966, was fired earlier this month in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse scandal at the school.

Free Safety- thanks for your defense of the football ban, it is stupid to think this will happen and clearly they are confident it will not by holding this coaching search.

This is still a premier job in America as the oven is at its hottest now, it wont heat up to the boiling levels it was before simply because of time, the fact that people will move on to fry someone else (syracuse bball, obama, etc) and the fact that any who truly played a part are no longer there.

The hot name right now is Dan Mullen.  Lets not forget, Urban had a great chance to go here but once this came out there was no chance so he went to a school with less issues at the moment.

I believe it will be Mullen if he wants it and we counter the Buckeye move so to speak with the architect of Urbs offense.  Mullen knew the Miss St job was just a stepping stone as he can never win at that school with the LSU, Floridas, Bamas, and Georgias to compete with in recruiting.  Up in Penn State he cant take Urbs left overs.  Perhaps Bradley stays as D coord though i doubt it.

Still would want Dungy, but his age and non experience at the college level may be too much to overcome.  Then again, cant see a kid with dungy sitting in his living room or his parents not thinking he is the best guy to go play for and learn about life.

I would not be unhappy with Mullen, just get on with it and move on so we can attack the recruiting trail and keep our solid class we have now.

I know Bradley is out there now talking to every one of them.  As bad as this PSU team was this year (well their qb play), they still are a top 25 team with a lot of talent who were a fg miss away from playing this Saturday in the big 10 title game at 9-3.  Amid all these kids had to deal with for their 3 biggest games of the year, i am very proud of them.

PSU will come back stronger than ever, i dont think we have went anywhere yet either did we?

Before you attack, remember 99 percent of people associated with our school, whether fans/alumni, students, players, coaches had not a clue this was happening.  And we still dont know what Paterno really knew, other than some feel morally he could/should have done more.  But hes gone, Penn State is not!

This is the most ridiculous conspiracy theory I have heard yet.  Get your head checked.

Why do they have to drop fb to restore their rep?   99.9% of the fb program wasnt a part of it.   the two dudes who were a part of it - mcqueery and paterno - should have been more aggressive in bringing sandusky to light/justice, but even they did not directly molest anyone.  sandusky will get his day in court.   the victims hopefully will see justice.   i am just missing the logic train where keeping the fb program going on is bad for PSU's dignity or hurtful to the victims.

...on to coaches.  how about butch jones from cincy?  he had uc at 8-1 before collaros's injury.  with the big east looking a mess, he may be willing to take a chance on going to an elite program, albeit in a weird and unsavory time for said program.

IMO a big name is out of the question, a big name will want NO part of the mess going on at PSU right now and you never want to follow a legend anyway so that wont happen.

Schiano is actually a good suggestion, he had been mentioned as a replacement before all this happened and his style fits the BIG perfectly, also he brought a TERRIBLE Rutgers program to at least a level of respectability so hard times are nothing new to him and with the Big East burning to the ground Rutgers may well be on the outside looking in as far as BCS level before long so he just may take it on.

Interesting theory, but way off base.  You have to put alway your PSU swag for awhile or get treatment.

This guy:

Tom Bradley is the Jeopardy answer to the question "Why Mike McQueary did nothing beyond...".  I think McQreary held his knowledge of the Sandusky incident as a way to blackmail Joe Paterno into staying long enough such that the now 59-year old Bradley would "age" out of consideration for the head coaching job.  A 90+ year old Paterno would then be conveniently succeded by a 39-year old McQueary.

I think this will be a poop job for several years and if were a hot coaching prospect I'd stay away with a 11 foot pool.  Dungy would probably make a better AD then coach.

Maybe they can get Dick Cheney. He's clever at getting out of situations. Penn State needs someone who can make the contributors think that the school did nothing wrong. He has a history for damage control
