Wulff fired; Leach on Washington St. short list

UPDATE: Washington State athletic director Bill Moos formally announced Paul Wulff's termination at a news conference in Pullman on Tuesday. Moos said the search for Wulff's replacement was under way and former Texas Tech coach Mike Leach is on his short list of candidates.

FROM MONDAY: As expected, Wulff became the latest coaching casualty in the Pac-12, the third of the week and fourth of the season for the conference. Vince Grippi of the local Spokesman-Review reported the news Tuesday afternoon:

That report was quickly followed by an official announcement at the Washington State website. Athletic director Moos said that despite Sunday reports that Wulff had already been dismissed, he met with the coach Sunday and again Tuesday before reaching a decision.

"I determined the best path for Cougar football moving forward is to have a change of leadership," Moos said in the statement. "I appreciate all that Paul has done for Washington State football. He was hired with the objective of rebuilding this program and establishing a solid foundation. For that I thank him."

Wulff leaves with a 9-40 overall mark in his four years in Pullman, the worst winning percentage in school history. But his teams had shown dramatic statistical improvement over those four seasons and 2011 was his best season yet--a 4-8 mark overall and two Pac-12 wins despite losing starting quarterback Jeff Tuel to an early-season collarbone injury.

Moos would not establish any timetable for naming Wullf's replacement, saying only that he "expect(s) to name a successful candidate as soon as possible."

High School Referee Incident

Mangino has had his share of controversies through the years, including the one involving the officiating crew that called the game where his son Tommy played in. On September 21, 2002, Mangino yelled at the crew assigned to the Lawrence High School-Olathe East football game after the said officials seemingly missed a late hit on his son, the LHS quarterback. LHS officials took undisclosed action against Mangino after the game for violating a Kansas High School rule barring abuse of game officials by coaches, players and fans.

Yeah, Mark Mangino is a real leader of men. After reading this description of his behavior at his son's high school game I shouldn't be shocked he is from New Castle.

Unlike this time last year, there are a number of schools with openings that will be smart enough to go after Leach.  Pitt and Maryland, how ddid those other coaches that you picked do this year, I'll tell you Pitt average and Maryland 2-9.  Remember when Leach and Richrod were both coordinators on the brink of head coaching and both considered for the Texas Tech job, they could end up playing every year in Arizona and we would find out who's better, Leach, trust me Richrod from a member of Mountaineer nation and we have one of Leach's proteges so we know what his system can do.  Sorry Washington State the only role you'll play is setting the price tag for ASU or UCLA.

Don't forget about Coach Mark Mangino who has been the assistant coach of the year while OC at Oklahoma and National Coach of the year at Kansas, arguably one of the worst programs in the country and WON.  He was the victim of a witch hunt and Lew Perkins should have been the one forced out when you look back at everything.  Coach Mangino got payed to step away when they could not find any wrongdoing.

People tend to forget Mark Mangino who won the Frank Broyals award for top Assistant Coaches at Oklahoma and National Coach of the Year at Kansas one of the worst programs in the country and WON.  He was the target of a witch hunt that led to him having to leave Kansas.  Looking back anyone could see that Lew Perkins is the one that should have had to leave.

Word has it WSU is ready to pony up to $2 Million a year for the right coach, they already have an $80 million restoration project for their stadium and Moos is really pushing the updating of facilities. I didn't ever think Wulff was the right guy for WSU but they had to statrt somewhere? - after Doba's wife came down with cancer he should have retired. He didn't have the time to address the recruiting issues and whatnot so the team suffered quite a bit before Wulff got there? (This by no means excuses Wulff after four years with nothing to show for it) Mike Price was able to make it work there (3 - 10+ win seasons in a row) so a solid program can happen there? Getting a good coach will be a challenge though ever for the $$$? - I'm a firm believer if anyone can make that happen, Moos can do it. He's a good AD and a huge bonus for WSU in general....

I think Moos & WSU football are going to be screwed on trying to find a new coach. There are way too many better programs out there looking for head coaches. When all is said and done WSU will not be able to hire their first, second, or third choice... too many vacant jobs and WSU will not be able to offer enough money compared to everybody else. Leach is a pipe dream... he made $2.54 millions a year at Texas Tech while Wulff was only making $600,000.

A new TV contract is nice but how does the lowest athletic budget in the Pac-12 compete for Leach? They can't plain and simple... I hope they take a look at Dave Christensen from Wyoming. He is a local guy with a winning resume
