If there's a head coaching vacancy, odds are that Houston head coach Kevin Sumlin has been brought up as a candidate to fill the position. Arizona State had been one of the many schools interested in Sumlin, but according to a report from a the local Fox television affiliate in Houston, Arizona State is moving on.

The report says that Arizona State has broken off talks with Sumlin's agent, Trace Armstrong. The school never had any direct contact with Sumlin during the talks.

"We've dropped from further communication and moved on," a source told the station.

There is no indication as to why the talks have come to an end, but as for where Arizona State will turn next, former Oregon coach Mike Bellotti has been mentioned as a candidate, and current Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz has reportedly expressed interest in the job as well.

... AFTER SEEING THE SCORE OF THEIR GAME TODAY AFTER 3 QUARTERS OF PLAY!!

Wow, all those points and yards and a few posters defending Keenum playing late in the 4th quarter when there were 70 points on the board.

I hope USP drops 63 on them.

Bellotti would be a very good choice for Arizona State.  He certainly has a record of success in the Pac 12.  He would immediately bring some respectability to ASU.  He would also help ASU in the recruiting wars, which are always critical in the Pac 12.  Arizona made their move and grabbed Rich Rodriguez.  Washington State grabbed Mike Leach.  No one knows exactly what Sumin is going to do, but odds have it that if he moves, it will not be out West, to the Pac 12.  Both UCLA and Arizona State are looking for a new Head Coach.  If ASU is smart, they grab Bellotti now, before UCLA has a shot at him.

Aggies please don't hire Sumlin

I am hoping Kevin Sumlin sees the dysfunction in College Station and realizes that he can't win there.  A&M, with all it's resources, has been the 4th best football team in Texas over the last ten years -- maybe the 5th.  Texas, Tech (under Leach), TCU, and maybe Houston are all better football teams.  A&M is fools gold, supposedly great potential, rabid fans, unreal expectations, too many bosses, and consistent mediocrity.  Just say no Kevin, I like you too much to see you ruined by this dysfunctional program.

Sumlin's Air Raid offense is exactly like Mike Leach's with the one exception of putting a guy in motion before the snap, in order to try and throw the defense off a little bit more.  It works.

If Texas A&M does not grab Sumlin right now, they will continue down the path of mediocrity and the revolving door of coaches.  Probably every skilled positioned high schooler in Houston would jump on the chance to play for him especially if he is at Texas A&M.  And the talent pool in Houston is SO big, that a good coach would never have to go beyond there to recruit.

If Texas A&M doesn't get him, it will be just as stupid as when they fired Slucom.  The residual affect will be long lasting.

Given that he worked under RC Slocumb in the 90's I'd say he's going to Texas A&M.  Now is the perfect time for him to leave Houston with Case Keenum going to the NFL.

Best jobs available in order - Texas A&M, Penn State, Arizona State, UCLA, UNC, Illinois, Ole Miss, Kansas, Memphis

Sumlin should grab one of these while he is the "it" guy.  Who knows he may the next genius to turn around a program.

because he is going to A&M....... A&M would not let Sherman go unless they had Sumlin  locked up  at least i would hope not.  Sumlin is a former Stoops assistant like Leach and Mangino who are football wizards

I'd be willing to bet the talks were dropped because Sumlin is going to A&M. :)
