Robert Griffin III is your heavy Heisman favorite

With the Heisman votes already in and tabulated, there's nothing the candidates can do between now and Saturday's announcement but wait ... and watch certain votes (mostly from the media) become public. And based on those public votes, one candidate has to be feeling better about his chances than ever.

The website StiffArmTrophy.com annually aggregates and tabulates those public votes, a system which has led the site to accurately predict the Heisman Trophy winner each of the past nine seasons. And it already looks like Robert Griffin III is going to be that projected winner in 2011; of the first 189 ballots tracked down by the site, 118 of them have named Griffin their top choice and only 26 have omitted him entirely. (On the three ballots issued by writers at CBSSports.com, Dennis Dodd, Bruce Feldman and Brett McMurphy have all placed Griffin No. 1.)

At that pace, Griffin is projected to win the award by 982 voting points over runner-up Andrew Luck. Though that would get Luck closer than he was in his runner-up finish 2010, he wouldn't be that much closer; Cam Newton won the award by a 1,184-point margin last season.

That Griffin's margin could even be mentioned in the same sentence as Newton's shows how much support the Baylor All-American garnered over the late stages of the season, and it's not just StiffArmTrophy that's noticed; Griffin is now a runaway betting favorite amongst sportsbooks, with his 1-to-5 odds easily bettering second choice Trent Richardson's 11-to-4.

Put all that available evidence together, and we'd argue that Griffin and the Bears can go ahead and start clearing out some trophy space. It's done.

rxpjkt,

Yes you read that correctly. UF, Auburn, Tenn.,  Miss. State, and Arkansas are all worse than they have been in years. I am not saying they are horrible on defense I am saying they weren't as good as they have been in the past 5 years. And all of those teams were on Alabama's schedule. The only legitimate defense that Alabama faced was LSU. If Trent can't lead the nation in rushing with the schedule Bama had then he doesnt' deserve it. I bet he finishes third behind Rober Griffin and Andrew Luck. Montee Ball should finish above him but he doesn't get the publicity that an SEC running back does.

"I have to laugh, Montee Ball had more touchdowns than RGIII."
OK...Griffin threw for 36 touchdowns and ran for 9 more. Total, 45. Ball ran for 32 touchdowns and caught passes for 6 more. Total, 38.

Two fantastic college players, both of whom I'd love to have on my team. But if your criterion is who produced more touchdowns, you've just made a case for Griffin, not Ball. But my favorite argument for Griffin is the one others have made: he's *everything* to that team.

It's debateable if Ball is even the best player on that team. There is no question that Wilson's accurate passing attack draws the defense off the run significantly. Griffin IS Baylor. Baylor would probably win 3-5 games without him, and instead, they are one of the top teams in the Big 10/12. Take Ball off Wisconsin, and they still win 9-10 games. Ball is a product of Wisconsin's success, while Baylor's success is a product of Griffin.

I have to laugh, Montee Ball had more touchdowns than RGIII.  Rushing and receiving more TD's than a QB.  You know this award is a joke.  Surprised

SEC defense sucks?  Really? Then how is it when the top tier SEC schools play in BCS bowl games they hang 20+ on their opponents? How is it that usually these games are extremely one sided?  The SEC dominates the BCS. As for Missouri bringing something to the SEC, well I surely hope so, or they will most definitely turn into the Kentucky of the SEC West...irrelevant.

Wow, are you guys dumb or something? I am a huge Andrew Luck fan, but I can see why RGIII could win the award too. As for TR, I'd be surprised if he doesn't finish 4th just ahead of the Money Badger.

The flash in the pan player comment is laughable at best. Richardson is no doubt a top tier player but without him Alabama is still a top tier team. As an LSU fan, my vote would go to Griffin for the Heisman. When was the last time you saw Baylor's team be relevant. Without him they would be lucky to have three wins. My opinion, but without the Honey Badger we still have a great team. Cmon folks, look at the award for what it means not just your conference or team.
