Kansas hires Charlie Weis

We have our early leader for most surprising choice of the 2011 Coaching Carousel.

Kansas announced via its Twitter account on Thursday night that the school has hired current Florida offensive coordinator, and former head coach at Notre Dame, Charlie Weis to be its new head coach.

Weis hasn't been a head coach since 2009, after spending five seasons with Notre Dame, going 35-27 and three bowl games. Unfortunately for Weis, most of those wins came during his first two seasons.

He spent this season as Florida's offensive coordinator, and Florida's offense wasn't exactly a juggernaut this season, finishing in the bottom half of the FBS in yards and scoring.

Weis will be announced at a press conference on Friday.

And as surprising as this move by Kansas is, none of us are more surprised than Will Muschamp.

According to CBSSports' Brett McMurphy, Muschamp had no idea his offensive coordinatorwas even interviewing for a job with Kansas, so he learned at the same time everybody else did. Muschamp was on his way to a press conference for the Gator Bowl when the news broke.

Kansas hires Charlie Weis

Those of you that don't live in Kansas City and didn't get to read the several excellent aarticles in the Kansas City Star, will not
appreciate the humanity of Weis. I look for a definate improvement in the KU football program.

Good points Bid Daddy. This is the same University that hired Gill, a .500 winning percentage coach in the Metro conference and thought he could be successful in the Big 12. Who knows, maybe the lack of expectations and pressure will enable him to be more successful than people think. But even if this scenario comes to fruition, how long will he stay? He isn't really known for staying at one place long. He sort of reminds me of Larry Brown in basketball, only less successful.

Charlie Weiss is a fantastic NFL OC.

However, his history in college is not good. His poor performance at Notre Dame that eventually led to his firing is well chronicled. And his one year stint as OC at Florida can only be described as disappointing. Yes, there was a lack of offensive talent and Florida, but you would expect a brilliant OC to be able to overcome that to some extent. Look what Boise St does with 3 star atheletes. If you can't bring the performance of the players you coach up, then you'd just a mediocre coach. Any coach can win with top notch all five star talent. Show me a coach who can make 3 star talent play like 4 star talent (like Boise State, Baylor, and others have done this and other years) and I'll show the coaches I would go after if I were AD.

Charlie Weiss is not on that list. He bring name recognition and a very large butt, but I don't see him as an effective recruiter or a guy who can raise the performance level of college players. Plus how much credibility is he going to have with college recruits when he was fire from Notre Dame and left Florida after only one year. Would you trust Weiss? He could change his mind again next year.

OMFG.  I can't believe that there are that many people who care that much about Kansas football or dislike Weis that much.  Being a Jayhawk I was initially dissapointed in the hire but hell I'm on board, we're still Kansas, coaches are not lining up and taking a number.  Weis probably gets too much credit in NE since they have not missed a step since his departure.  He obviously interviews well or would have never gotten the ND job.  He is a good family man and runs a clean program.  He has probably learned a lot in the last four years and his legacy will depend the quality of OC & DC he brings on board.  He was actually a pretty good recruiter at ND.  He can be an obnoxious, arrogant a$$hole but there is no law against that or there would not be any of these message boards.  That the expectations are modest is an understatement.  We just need to be competitive, Weed Eater Bowl here we come.

Why is everybody so high on this hire. He didnt cut it at Notre Dame or as the OC for Florida. He made it off what Bill has done in New England and used Ty Willingham recruits to win his first couple years at ND then what happened when he got his guys there, got he butt sent packing. Kansas Is a basketball school and always will be plus no big time recruit is going there.

I am amazed at how blind most of you are to the positives that are apparent to this merger.  Kansas cannot recruit in the Big 12.  A name and proven QB producer in Charlie Weis immediately brings credibility to signing decent QB and WR recruits to Kansas.  Have you watched the Big 12 lately?  Its an offensive conference vs. Big 10 and SEC which dominate defensively.  You need to be able to put up 50 a week in the Big 12 to survive (unless you are Bill Snyder who I have the utmost respect for)  Even OU needs to put up numbers every week or they cannot compete...ask UT how it has been since they cannot put up 30+ a game anymore...case in point here is the 2011 Baylor squad and a continued amazing offense in Stillwater.  Anyone know who Crabtree or Blackmon are...the only 2 time Biletnikoff award winners if I heard it right last night....now dont just respond right away but think for a minute what I just said.  And dont kid yourselves...Weis will draw top QB's and WR's will follow.  You just can't argue that.

Charlie will be given some rope at KU too.  Expectations will not be immediately high and KU has been looking for a coach in FB to match the stature of Bill Self to make the BB team part of the recruiting process with the possible power of both programs.  In my mind that is huge because they wont fire him in 2 season like Turner "the fish" Gil.  If he wins consistantly he will be given a long term chance which is something KU rarely has allowed in their FB program.  Charlie has been under a mega-microscope since his time in NE at the NFL level and I actually think that if he is given the time to create a culture (which takes 5-7 years which he did not get at ND) there could be a decent outcome.

I understand his shortcomings, not gonna bring big D recruits but anything better than the 225 D-lineman and high school talent level LB's we run out every year will be an improvement in my eyes.  GT ran for 625 yards on us this year because we have all 1 and 2 star (maybe) recruits on our defense....period.

I am not saying that he is going to set the world on fire this year or next or will we challenge for a BCS championship in the next 5 years, those things take time.  If he can be consistent in producing and gaining credibility for our program year over year that is a HUGE win for a KU program that has always been the redhead stepchild of the Big 8 and Big 12 FB conference.

Welcome Charlie, I for one am glad to have you!

The Patriots won their championships due to their defense.  However their offense became better after Weiss left!  Talk about a guy who is being credited with a whole lot of success for being at the right place at the right time.

Could McMurphy and the CBS staff be anymore inept?

Per ESPN

"In the recent days, he was contacted about the job and we talked about it and he told me it was an opportunity he wanted to take," Muschamp said. "Any time, and our profession is no different than the business world, when you're able to take a step up, I support it.

"I asked him, I said, 'Is this something you're really interested in doing?' He said, 'Yeah, I want to talk to `em. If I wasn't interested, I would not talk,'" Muschamp said. "So I said, `I support you 100 percent if that's what you want to do. I think that's great.' Now, when guys make parallel moves, I don't necessarily agree with that. When guys can further their career, I think it's great."
