Cincinnati starting quarterback Zach Collaros came close to seeing his career as a Bearcat come to an end when he suffered a broken ankle on Nov. 12 in a 24-21 loss to West Virginia. Collaros was ruled out for the remainder of the regular-season immediately, but his rapid recovery kept the door open on a return for the postseason. According to Tom Groeschen, of the Cincinnati Enquirer, the senior quarterback has already done some 7-on-7 drills and is "pretty optimistic" he can play in the Liberty Bowl on Dec. 31.
"I'm just getting as much rehab as possible. I've been living in the training room," Collaros explained on Wednesday. "I'm just going to keep doing whatever they tell me to do, and hopefully my body heals."
Collaros still has yet to run on the injured ankle, but head coach Butch Jones did say the quarterback is "way ahead of schedule" in his recovery. Jones explained what the coaches and staff will be looking for, and said it's about 50/50 whether Collaros would finish his Cincinnati career in the bowl game against Vanderbilt.
"The next week is going to be critical with some game-speed repetitions, and we'll see if he continues to progress," Jones said on Wednesday. "Each day he gets better and better. The big thing we're monitoring with his limited activity right now is the amount of swelling. The swelling has really been controlled, but it's really too early to tell if he'll be able to go or not."
The quarterbacking duties for the remainder of the regular season were primarily in the hands of sophomore Munchie Leguax, with Jordan Luallen serving as a change-of-pace rushing threat. Leguax finished the season 2-1 as a starter, helping the Bearcats claim a share of their third Big East conference title in four years. West Virginia claimed the three-team BCS tie-breaker with Cincinnati and Louisville, but the 9-3 finish was a huge step forward for Butch Jones is his second year with the program.
