Marcus Coker, Iowa's leading rusher on the season, will not be joining the team as it travels to the Insight Bowl to face Oklahoma on December 30. The school announced on Tuesday that Coker had been suspended from the team after violating an unspecified policy in the school's Student-Athlete Code of Conduct.

Coker was the workhorse of the Iowa offense in 2011, rushing 281 times for 1384 yards and 15 touchdowns. He also caught 21 passes for 157 yards. Coker led the Hawkeyes in rushing in each of their last 11 games, and ranked second in the Big Ten in rushing yards (behind Montee Ball) while placing third in rushing touchdowns (behind Ball and Denard Robinson).

Incidentally, it was a teammate's suspension going into the Insight Bowl in 2010 that gave Coker the breakout performance of his freshman year. With starter Adam Robinson suspended after "failing to comply with team policies," Iowa turned to Coker in its game against Missouri, and Coker responded with a scintillating performance: 33 carries, 219 yards, two touchdowns, and several broken tackles.

The Hawkeyes' first option at tailback in Coker's place would have been freshman Mika'il McCall, but McCall was suspended for the team's season finale at Nebraska for a violation of team rules and remains suspended, according to the Iowa athletic department. Additionally, even if McCall had been eligible to participate, he suffered a serious ankle injury in the season opener against Tennessee Tech; since the injury he has seen two carries -- the second of which was a lost fumble.

So without its top two running backs, Iowa has De'Andre Jackson, a redshirt freshman who has rushed for 79 yards on 18 carries in mop-up duty, and the athletic but smallish true freshman Jordan Canzeri, who has nine rushes for 56 yards. Damon Bullock, another true freshman, has rushed for 22 yards on eight carries, but seven of those came against Louisiana-Monroe and he has not seen action at RB since. Iowa may also turn to walk-on junior Jason White, who has split time between safety and running back in his time at Iowa and has three rushes for 12 yards this season.

Iowa RB Coker suspended for Insight Bowl

Hey Hawkfan673!  When exactly was Iowa 10-2? And what year did the Hawkeyes get any sniff of a Big 10 title? Bro, I think you're the dude who doesn't know the difference between a quality coach (Urban Meyer) and some stiff collecting a $3mill paycheck by simply getting Iowa bowl-eligible and beating the dreaded Cyclones every other year. I know life in Iowa ain't all that grand, but you are sounding delusional.

3 big ten titles in 9 years, top 3 most most drafted NFL players the last 9 years,(Its true check it out) with way less talent than Richt at Georgia but Ferentz isnt a good coach? Set down moron but thanks for playing. Know a little before talking, as late as 2009 season Iowa was number $ in BCS and 9-0 when starting QB goes down, but they don't compete....?

Its funny how you say shred the defense, when Oklahomas offense has been stagnant in the passing game since losing Broyls...I mean I love Okie State, but they are not known for defense and they made OU look real bad....Losing Coker may just what Oklahoma needs, but look out last time I watched OU's pass defense it was giving up a ton of points and yards....Iowa QB very capable of carrying Iowa especially against OU defense...look for McNutt and Davis to have huge recieving games.....OU should win this game, but my guess is they are not going to destroy anyone.....Your post border on ignorant sometimes. Iowa was 10-2 with a 3rd string walkon running back and tied for the big 10 title. Count em out again genius........

Hey Hawkfan4life! Bro; you can't be serious. Even Big Game Bob Stoops can't blow this game. If Kirk Cousins can shread your defense, just wait til Artesia, New Mexico's Landry Jones and his teammates put up 50 on the Hawkeyes on a fast track. My man, my family was so poor in my childhood that we used frozen terds because we couldn't afford a real football. Things got a bit messy when the temperature rose above 32 degrees. Do yourself a favor son and lay the 16 on the Sooners, get a bottle of Wild Turkey and enjoy the bringing in the New Year's.

bigdaddy, agreed. Iowa has been very Jeckyll/Hyde this year. This game against OU felt like a blowout before they announced that Coker was out. Now, it looks worse.  But, they show up for bowl games and Stoops seems to have a hard time motivating his players when they are not playing for a top-tier bowl (and often FOR top-tier bowls). McNutt is a game changer if they let him loose and Iowa's line can probably protect Vandenburg early in the game to get him going.  The problem there is, I've seen too many games that they essentially forget to get McNutt involved early in games.

If Iowa jumps out early with a couple quick scores (maybe a kick return or a defensive touchdown thrown in) they can make it a game.  They use their tight ends about as well as any team in the country. But if OU doesn't make any dumb turnovers and plays them toe to toe, it could turn into a beat-down. Losing your leading rusher/touchdown scorer does not bode well for any team.

Iowa RB Coker suspended for Insight Bowl

Iowa has always been one of those strange teams that decide on a weekly basis whether to show up or not.  They beat Michigan, but lose to Iowa State and Minnesota.  Peole think that Ferentz is the greatest coach alive, but in reality, he is not a good coach at all.  He cannot keep his team up for an entire season.  The one thing Ferentz is able to do is get his teams ready to play in bowl games, having won the last three they have been in, two as dogs.  While Iowa may not be a legitimate threat to win any Big 10 titles anytime soon, they an be dangerous in bowl games, especially against a team like Oklahoma, which is known for "mailing in" their bowl game appearances.

I am guessing since finals week was last week Coker failed a class . It is not criminal/Steroids? Where do people get this stuff. In iowa City you have to pass your classes, if you fail it is a violation of the student conduct and you will be suspended.

Heard the same from the Tiger fans last year. Fact is you are just another loud mouth(dk13beso) who doesn't know the difference between a terd and a football. Iowa should really be worried about facing the pre-season number one team, that at times looked so bad a high school team could beat em. Still alot of players on Iowa's team, McNutt may hav 200 yards recieveing on the sooners defense that is weak, and don't worry about the running game, it will be ok...If its all the same I think we will show up, big question is Will OU?

Anyone know what the "team policy" violated is? I've heard rumors of criminal activity (jailtime?) and steroid use, though nothing confirmed. My guess is that he didn't just miss a meeting.
