Mike Stoops to join Oklahoma staff?

Late in the fourth quarter of Oklahoma's 31-14 victory over Iowa in the Insight Bowl, ESPN's sideline reporter Heather Cox broke some news, saying that there were "strong indications" that former Arizona head coach Mike Stoops would be joining Oklahoma's coaching staff. Cox reported that Stoops had been on both the Oklahoma sideline and in the coaches box during the game.

Mike Stoops, of course, is the brother of Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops. He was relieved of is head coaching duties at Arizona earlier this season.

While it's not official, Cox also reported that there could be a possible announcement in the coming days, and that Stoops would serve as a co-defensive coordinator with Brent Venables.

Stoops' name has been mentioned at quite a few schools since he lost his job at Arizona, including at Iowa, ironically enough, as Iowa defensive coordinator Norm Parker coached his final game with the Hawkeyes on Friday night. Both Mike and Bob Stoops went to school at Iowa, and Stoops was an assistant at the school in the late 80s.

Stoops spent five seasons with the Sooners as an assistant under his brother from 1999 to 2003, including Oklahoma's last national championship in 2000.

Mike Stoops to join Oklahoma staff?

Funny how Bob Stoops continually denies this.  I suspect it's to not shake up recruits Willie Martinez is working with.  Of course, he could end up not at OU, but for him to pass up being D-coordinator at OSU and Nebraska was quite surprising and got me thinking he just might come back to OU.

OU's defense has clearly not been the same since he left, and it started the moment he announced he was going to Arizona (see KSU debacle in 2003).  The offenses in the Big 12 are now different, and there's more quality athletes across the board, but aside from the defensive play calling, it's the attitude I've noticed more than anything else.  Playing without intensity and the currently position coaches not keeping a fire under the players butts during practices.

To respond to an earlier poster, Venables does use man, but OU was burned pretty badly in the first quarter against Mizzou doing just that.  However, that was more the players playing out of position than not being fast enough.

I hope OU does get Mike back, and returns to a more physical style of defense.  I'm tired of seeing us getting gashed against quality runners, and if the front 4 do their jobs, then there's not second guessing in the secondary, where it's too late to recover from biting on play fakes.

I Agree.  YES we need help. We need backs like LSU has coverage and Venables doesn't have a clue.

I can understand going back to OU and working with family, but hope he is given a chance to come back home to his alma mater as well, he would look good again in the black and gold at Iowa.

OU needs Mike Stoops back.  Venables sucks.  OU has the athletes to play more man coverage and blitz more.  Venables zone gets shredded year after year.  Classic example was Texas Tech... OU should never have lost to Texas Tech this year.

No wonder Venables can't get a HC job, he's awful.
