Mike Stoops in at OU, Venables out?

While it was first reported that former Arizona head coach Mike Stoops would be returning to Oklahoma to coach on his brother Bob Stoops' staff after Oklahoma's win over Iowa in the Insight Bowl, nothing had been announced officially on the subject. That is, until now.

“I'm on my way to Oklahoma this afternoon,” Mike Stoops told The Oklahoman. “It's just going through some formalities at this point.”

It's what those formalities are that cause a bit of confusion. When it was first reported that Mike Stoops was returning to Oklahoma, it was said that he'd coach the defensive backs and be a co-defensive coordinator alongside Brent Venables. Whether that will end up being the case or not has now been brought into question.

The Tulsa World reported on Thursday that Venables has talked with West Virginia about its vacant defensive coordinator position. Jeff Casteel left Dana Holgorsen's staff on Wednesday to reunite with Rich Rodriguez on his new Arizona coaching staff. If Venables did leave Oklahoma for West Virginia, he'd likely be co-defensive coordinator as well, but unlike at Oklahoma where he'd have to defer to Mike Stoops -- blood is thicker than water after all -- he'd be the lead defensive coach on Holgorsen's staff.

So it's clear right now that there will be some shakeups on Oklahoma's coaching staff this season, though we don't know how big they'll be just yet. Though, in my opinion, it's hard to see Venables staying at Oklahoma at this point where he'd suffer a sort of demotion rather than taking the West Virginia job.

Mike Stoops in at OU, Venables out?

Whoever made the statement that WV can't afford both Venerable and DeForest better think again. WV is out to win the BIG 12, not just participate.

Mike Stoops in at OU, Venables out?

This is almost humorous! For the past two years or more, everyone has been blaming Brent Venables for the defensive problems at Oklahoma and screaming for Brent Venables to fired, and made the scape goat for the Sooners defense not winning another National Championship. The fact is, Brent Venables and Mike Stoops are two of the top defensive coaches in College Football and have a history of working very well together and Mike Stoops returning to OU is by no means a demotion for coach Venables. The reason for the decline in defensive talent at Oklahoma is not because of any one coach, but is the result of the offensive schemes being run in the Big 12. With the line up and air it out offense that is so prevelant in the Big 12, defenses all across the conference are targeting the quick defensive backs instead of the line em' up, smash mouth run defensive players OU was so well known for back in the 70's, 80's & 90's. When Bob Stoops arrived at Oklahoma and implemented the hurry up passing attack offense and realized immediate success, all of the other teams in the conference followed suit. Now we will most probably see Oklahoma moving to a more even mix of run and pass, and see more of the dominant offensive and defensive line players arrive at OU and across the conference. One thing  Coach Switzer always said and has always proved to be true, is that defense wins Championships. Just look at the types of team that have won the National Championship, not just the past few years but back the the modern era.

The media is who and what has made this a Brent Venables vs Mike Stoops issue, just like so many other issues that arise in college sports because the media has to have something to write about and are known to create something when there isn't anything to write about. I believe the 2012 and 2013 football seasons will prove this to be true and Oklahoma will have another dominant defense and another Sears National Championship Trophy to add to its impressive showcase and resume. Sure, both are excellent defensive coaches and both were always on the top of the short lists for head coaching vacancies and both always will be until one or both are offered the right head coaching position where they will be successful. Until that time comes, it is a benefitial situation for both to coach at Oklahoma where they can together put a dominating defense on the field and take the Sooners back to the top of college football. These guys are friends and we will see them work well together and as long as they want  to coach at Oklahoma.

Mike Stoops in at OU, Venables out?

The only surprise here was that it took a fortnight to announce the move; when Venables saw Mike Stoops at the Insight Bowl he probably called his realtor at half time, and told her to put his house up for sale before he returned to Norman.  Besides, nobody on the planet Earth could be a Co-Defensive Coordinator with Mike Stoops for more than fifteen minutes.

Looks like the Clemson DC job is open too, though I'm guessing he wouldn't make as much $ at either WV or Clemson as he was at OU.

Mike Stoops in at OU, Venables out?

I'm sure Venable's will find greener pastures that he'll cultivate into a bitter pill for the Stoop's to gnaw upon...

Talented and capable guy there, would love to see him come to WV

Mike Stoops in at OU, Venables out?

There is no misunderstanding here ... Bob Stoops re-hiring his brother Mike Stoops is undercutting Brent Venables, and Venables should search for greener pastures before he is put out to pasture in Norman, OK.

Now, Mike Stoops may be a better football coach, who knows, but it is a battle Venables is sure to lose.
