Brent Venables still with the Sooners, for now

Ever since it was announced that Mike Stoops would be returning to Oklahoma to join his brother Bob Stoops' staff, there have been questions about defensive coordinator Brent Venables' future at the school. Mike Stoops was officially announced as Oklahoma's new defensive backs coach and as the co-defensive coordinator along with Venables, but since the announcement, Venables' name has come up at a few other schools.

Last week Venables was reportedly interviewing with Dana Holgorsen at West Virginia after Jeff Casteel left the school to go to Arizona. Venables then took himself out of the running and left with Mike Stoops on Friday to do some recruiting in Florida. Instead of returning back to Norman, though, Venables then spent the rest of his weekend interviewing with Dabo Swinney about becoming defensive coordinator at Clemson.

There had been reports that Venables had accepted the Clemson job, but upon returning to Norman on Sunday, Venables would neither confirm or deny being offered the Clemson job.

According to the Tulsa World, Dabo Swinney still wants to interview former Miami head coach Randy Shannon and maybe a few others before making a final decision.

Whether or not Venables takes the Clemson job probably won't be known until later in the week, but the signs seem to be indicating that he's either set on leaving the Sooners. He has interviewed for head coaching positions many times while at Oklahoma, but he'd never interviewed to be a defensive coordinator at another school during that time. Now he's done so twice in the last week.

I just don't think that happens if he's happy with the idea of splitting his coaching duties with Stoops.

Brent Venables still with the Sooners, for now

Brent Venables has had some interesting defenses at Oklahoma since he got here but the combo of "Stoops & Venables" was hard to argue how good they were. 1999-2003 Oklahoma had a good run yes they only won one NCG in 2000 but the defenses were actually good.

However since Mike Stoops left for Arizona and Brent took over full time and not to say anything bad about Brents defenses but some games they couldn't do any wrong and other games they couldn't do any right. Now this isn't all Brents fault, players get injured, and when its your key players who have significant game time and you put in someone who hasn't had much game time other teams will exploit your weaknesses. You can't blame anyone really.

Is it a slap in the face? I dunno. But if Venables wants to take another job at either WVU or Clemson then I wish him the best of luck. I just don't see him going anywhere if he's on recruiting trips now. It would be weird to for him to recruit for Oklahoma and then just take a job somewhere else.

However next year Mike Stoops may be a solo act and Venables may be at another school.

It's rediculous the expectations that these coaches have to live up too anymore, instead of giving them the time they need to build a decent team with recruiting colleges are firing coaches after the 2nd year. And if a college is doing too good after a year all these other colleges come calling in and hiring away. This coaching carousel needs to stop and coaches need to honor the contracts they sign.

Skibum I'm with John Hightower on this one. Bringing Mike Stoops back is both a slap in the face and a demotion to Venables even if his defenses have slipped in recent years. It's also weird that Mike couldn't or wouldn't get a defensive coordinator job somewhere else. Venables has every right to be upset especially since you don't get that far in the coaching profession without a little bit of ego and a ton of competitiveness.

Brent Venables still with the Sooners, for now

Both Brent Venables and Mike Stoops started with Bob Stoops in 1999. Yes, Mike Stoops left for Arizona, but Venables has been in Norman for 12 years now. While change can be good, and Brent's name comes up for other jobs all the time (he was once offered the Mizzou job before they gave it to Pinkel), I think Brent likes living in Norman and likes both the Stoops brothers as they have 15+ years of history together among the three. Venables is great with the linebackers and DL, but I think he honestly could enjoy the help Mike Stoops would bring to the secondary so he can continue to concentrate on what he knows best. He was a former LB at K-State and is the "Associate Head Coach" of the Sooners in Bob's absence. Perhaps Bob will keep Brent in that role to try to keep him in town. The bottom line is it worked great in 1999-2003 between Venable
s and Mike Stoops, and I don't see any reason why it couldn't work again. Venables may just trying to get a little more money out of Boren by interviewing elsewhere. The fact Mike and Brent went on a recruiting trip tells me all will be fine and he'll stay. Venables may feel relieved by being relieved of the secondary. I think the Venables-Mike Stoops combo would excite them both just thinking about how much better the Sooners defense will end up being under such a scenario. It sure excites me as a fan. Just my $0.02.

That's interesting.  There is a rumor around Morgantown that Randy Shannon is coming to WVU.  I have no idea which is the better coach, but I have heard that Venables is one of the best recruiters in the Big-12.  With WVU moving to the Big-12 in the near future it would have been nice to land one of the conferences top recruiters.

There is always the bottom line......Venables defenses have ended ranked very low in recent years! Now to say he is not a good coach, but I think he needs a change!

The simple truth of the matter is that Oklahoma defenses have not been the same since Mike Stoops left after the 2003 regular season. As for Venables, it's obvious that he sees the writing on the wall. Oklahoma clearly has major issues on the defensive side of the ball (especially in the secondary) and I'm sure most Sooner fans think it was time for a change.

Can understand Bob wanting to support his brother Mike.  But its a very public slap in the face for Brent Venerable.  And if it can happen to Brent, could it happen to the other coaches at the school?
