Tide NT Chapman played 7 games with torn ACL

It was already safe to say that Alabama senior nose tackle Josh Chapman -- the anchor for one of the greatest rush defenses of college football's past decade -- was one of the nation's best players this past season. It turns out he may also have been one of the toughest.

Chapman revealed Wednesday that he had undergone knee surgery the previous day and would be missing both the Senior Bowl and most of the upcoming NFL Draft Combine. The surgery repaired both a torn ACL and a torn meniscus in his left knee.

But neither the details of nor the fallout from Chapman's injury are nearly as attention-grabbing as when that injury occurred: October 1, in the Crimson Tide's 38-10 victory over Florida.

"Normally I can deal with pain pretty well, but after three days I needed an MRI," Chapman told the Birmingham News. "Dr. (LyleCain said he's never seen a guy that can have a torn ACL and still stay that stable."

How stable? Despite the injury, Chapman missed just one of the Tide's final eight games, an intended light workout vs. FCS Georgia Southern that turned much more serious when -- thanks in part to Chapman's absence -- the triple-option Eagles ran for a stunning 302 yards.

The late surgery won't allow Chapman to be at his best for the pro scouts, but given what was at stake for the Tide, he says he never considered a premature end to his senior season.

"I didn't really want to give up like that," he said. "I enjoyed playing. As long as it stayed right, I could play."

Chapman played all right, returning from the absence vs. GSU to help the Tide allow zero offensive points over their final eight quarters (Auburn scored touchdowns on defense and special teams) and win the national title. Despite finishing the season with just 23 tackles, 3.5 tackles-for-loss, and one sack, Chapman is still ranked the 77th prospect overall by NFLDraftScout.com, the 20th-best defensive tackle, and a possible second-round selection.

Not bad for a guy playing on one knee for two-thirds of the season.

Eye on CFB named Chapman to its 2011 All-SEC team. See who else made the cut by clicking here.

Tide NT Chapman played 7 games with torn ACL

It is a shame these posts have to turn out this way. Here is a story about a kid who showed increditable desire and indured terrible pain to help his team and ask noboby for a shoulder to cry on. I am a Razorback here who has no love for Bama, but certainly respect them as all teams and kids who give their all to do what they do. Anyone who can't respect what this kid did is very small. God Bless him in his future

@bandwagon... your response would mean more to me without all of the misspelled words, grammatical errors and overall nonsense. Congratulations, your sixth grade education and reasoning sure did put me in my place. And NO, it is not the kid's choice to play regardless of his health condition. Of course, I'm sure you're the smartest guy in your trailer park so you just keep on believing that.

Please point out the mispelled words for me so i can correct them, I was not aware we were being graded on spelling for these posts. I am acutely aware of the intense fact that you have not the slightest clue what slavery was all about with your comments, which is more glaring a problem than my inability to spell correctly. Where-as I might have used incorrect grammar or punctuation, mispelling is not the case.
Now for a life lesson for you, education means but one thing, that you have endured the time and effort it took to get a high level, not that you can spell or punctuate any better. I have a friend and colleague who is a doctorate level educated man, and he cannot spell to save his life. Does this mean he is uneducated....no, but according to you he would be sixth grade educated and full of a lack of reasoning.

I stand by my earlier post as it called attention to the fact that you 1. Have no basis of reality for what slavery was all about. 2. Should not make posts unless you do have a working knowledge of a subject, which obviously you dont. And i gues the final thing i would point out is that you clearly dont have a knowledge of slavery, but what we learned is that you can spell, punctuate and use good grammar, which tells me you might be good at needle point also because you could make those nice little wall art pieces that have fun sayings on them. Oh, i also learned that you clearly know what it takes to be sixth grade educated, since you clearly put me in my place with the whole spelling thing. Glad i know any number of individuals with Masters and Doctorates that cannot spell either or my self esteeem would be out the door right now. MORON.

He was probably just typing to you in a manner he thought you would understand.

Alabama should be penalized by the NCAA. They actually diagnosed the kid with a torn ACL and had him play regardless???

Talk about treating guys like racehorses - run them into the ground then turn 'em to glue when they can't run anymore!!!

The SEC actually makes my stomach turn. The fact people will think this is a somehow a good thing is mindboggling.

Slavery 2.0 - the only difference for blacks in the south is that now its televised, the courts are fixed to make sure they never get convicted of a crime and they let them have (nicer) shoes.

Wow, where to start with this one. I am going to cut and paste into a special folder for an award nominee for the whole year as this is one of the most idiotic things I have ever read on here.

First off, it would be the kids decision to continue to play if he felt he wanted to risk it, and he did, just like Maze in the Title game. He had an injury to his hamstring and knew if he tried to play it might injure it more severely, but he played, thats called dedication to your school, not slavery. Watch the title game and you will see tears coming from Maze after halftime, he wanted to play so bad he was distraught over it, thats love for a school and a team, not slavery.

The SEC making your stomach turn is a problem you can handle with some pepto bismol or maybe just take up needle point and dont watch college sports. Best to probably do the latter as it appears you are not near man enough to watch college football with the comments made in your post.

Now for the winner of the dumbest part of the post. I love this slavery issue that gets brought up. ***Now in order for this to work you have to envision this all being said in a deep southern accent like the one used by Andy Griffith***. Why, I remember reading about this in school, how the slaves would all line up on signing day and decide which master they would all want to become a slave for. They would have newspaper articles about the most talented slaves and how they were going to make headlines by making the plantation so much more productive by being the best slave possible. This is all sarcasm by the way for those who clearly dont have a sense of humor or any reading comprehension.
This had to be the best part and i love how people today liken something to slavery, when they have no concept of it at all. Take it for what its worth, but you people make my stomach turn if you think that anyone with free will to choose where they are going, what they are doing and the ability to quit said thing is comparable to any kind of slavery.

I feel sorry for you Oklahomo kid for not allowing your brain to have an original thought. Just because this dude played on an injury doesn't make him good. It also doesn't make him someone to look up to. He's an idiot.

tea bagger turns self in, I hope he does time, what an ass

Now if they can find the LSU fan who beat up a Bama fan who is in his 60's, causing his jaw to be wired shut for the next 6 weeks, we'll be 2 for 2. Seems to be another ass out there that needs to do time.

There are idiots in all fan bases. Seriously, if there was no video of this stupid act, I doubt that it would even be in the news. Not excusing what happened, but how many other incidents are there that few people ever hear about?

They should arrest the Bama defense as well, that whole game was a teabag on LSU's offense.
