Big Ten head coaches already upset with Meyer

It appears that the grace period for new coaches in the Big Ten lasts for 65 days or only one National Signing Day. That's how long it took for fellow Big Ten coaches to publicly speak about being upset with new Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer.

Not surprisingly, the complaints from Wisconsin's Bret Bielema and Michigan State's Mark Dantonio are related to Meyer's recruiting tactics. Particularly the part where he just shows up, swoops in and then causes recruits to suddenly change their minds and flock to Columbus.

“There are a few things that happened early on that I made people aware of that I didn’t want to see in this league, that I had seen take place in other leagues,” said Bielema on Wednesday. “Other recruiting tactics, other recruiting practices that are illegal.

“I was very up front and was very pointed to the fact, actually reached out to Coach Meyer and shared my thoughts and concerns with him. The situation got rectified.”

Michigan State's Mark Dantonio was a bit more to the point.

"(Ohio State has) a new coach, and it's different," Dantonio told the Detroit News. "I would say it's pretty unethical, in the end."

It seems that Bielema and Dantonio aren't used to the recruiting tactics Meyer has brought along from his days in the SEC, where the gentlemanly rules of the Big Ten do not exist. It seems SEC coaches know that no commitment means anything until a letter of intent is signed, so the race for any recruit they might want doesn't end before February.

Question the morality of it all you want, but you'll notice the SEC has won the last six national championships while the Big Ten has been rather uninspiring.

Meyer's first class at Ohio State was good enough to finish ranked third in the CBS Sports National Signing Day Top 25. In that class of 24, 10 of the commits didn't come on board until after Meyer became head coach at Ohio State. Of those 10 players, eight had previously given commitments to other school.

Including offensive lineman Kyle Dodson (Wisconsin) and defensive end Se'Von Pittman (Michigan State). Hence the reactions of Bielema and Dantonio. Still, of the other six, four had been committed to Penn State and two to Notre Dame. You don't hear Bill O'Brien or Brian Kelly crying foul about it today.

Not that complaining will do anything to deter Meyer. He's a head coach that realizes in order to build a successful program, not only do you need to have a good coaching staff, but you have to have good players. Players that are found through recruiting.

So whine about how he does all you want, he's seen the fruits of his efforts and has a couple rings to show for it. Nothing anybody can say will change that.

Other Big Ten coaches can either get on board, or run the risk of being left behind.

Big Ten head coaches already upset with Meyer

I would cry if I was MSU and Wisconsin too.  Its just the beginning of the smackdown.  They don't have to worry this year, it will likely be a down year for OSU as they install the system.  But you don't see Michigan crying.  Its OSU and Mich back on top of the big 10

But Meyer most likely will quit on these kids like he quit on all but one of his recruiting classes over the last 20 years.  And based on the complete lack of NFL prospects at Florida the last couple of years, I hope none of those kids want to play in the NFL.  I think Meyer put more kids in prison than in the NFL over the last few years.

They make hundreds of millions off these kids, and the majority of them dont see a dime from it.
Unless they play for Ohio State...just ask Sport Illustrated:  http://sportsillustrated.cnn.

How about you give some back to the kids.
And follow the example and precedent for winning that tOSU has set for all to model after.  Oh and if you can make it sound like you care about the kids and are really compassionate then it's only sort of bad for fudging on the rules...because deep down you're not really thinking about winning or the money...it's because you really care about the kids and you want to set a great example for them.

What The OSU players and coach did was wrong, and they got punished.
Wait for it...there has to be more OSU fans can't just accept the crime...they've always got some excuse or whine about the crime or the punishment....wait...wait...it's coming...

I disagree with certain aspects, such as the ones who miss out on the bowl this year are not even the ones who did the deed!! How is that fair??
And there it is....How is that fair?? (sniff, sniff)  How about, wow we were really lucky to get off the way we did.  We probably deserved worse than what we received.

OSU is not cheaters
Um, yes they are!  That's why you've been penalized.  It was called, "Failure to monitor."  It was more than just one guys...which makes it plural...so it's not cheater (Jim Tressel) it's cheaters (OSU).  You can't tell me that OSU didn't get away with more and are lucky to get off with what they got.  Furthermore you can't tell me that others weren't involved and administration didn't know about it...they just didn't get caught.  Again refer to SI investigation: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/20

Oh boy!!
There's gonna be a bunch of crappy coaches who will be crying for a long damn time. I mean it's not as if he took any of the kids from  the States of Michigan or Wisconsin. They were Ohio boys and they went where their heart wanted them to go.
Both Wisconsin and MSU had their run and now it's over. This will be another two team conference for another 10 -12 years, just like the Woody and Bo days. Just not sure who the other team will be!!!Laughing

And I guess recruiting hard is cheating? Tattoo gate was bad. but each school lately has had some issues... and will continue to untill the NCAA changes how they do business.  They make hundreds of millions off these kids, and the majority of them dont see a dime from it.  How about you give some back to the kids.  What The OSU players and coach did was wrong, and they got punished. I disagree with certain aspects, such as the ones who miss out on the bowl this year are not even the ones who did the deed!! How is that fair?? OSU is not cheaters, is it different then how some schools recruit, sure is.  But dont tell me Wisconsin, or Michigan ST werent quick to point out to certain recruits Hey look at OSU they are gonna be banned for 2 years from bowls, come here were not.  Please quit your whining and grow up.

Well I guess Jim Tressel and his shennanigans weren't enough for the cheating Buckeyes, Oh that's right Jimmy's boss is still there.  Just remember Bucky's the NCAA has a new sheriff in town and he doesn't look like a pushover.

WOW! Love to read some of these comments, especially the ones say that The OSU is on an island and all alone.. So basically just like when The OSU was the only team in the conf. with national title aspirations??? I agree that Urban has changed what the conf. is.  Especially with recruiting.  Is that bad? For someone who has been recruited before, I enjoyed having other people come seek me out, tell me how they are the better fit.  A highschool Junior or Senior does not have all the information on all the programs he might be interested in.  Let them present their case to him, if he tells them to stop calling, im sure they do.  That OT recruit that decommited from The OSU for that team up north, he admitted Urban called, he took the call, was not rude, and told him Thanks for the call but no thanks,  Kudos to him.  We will see how Noah Spence and Co.  react to his comments, but hey thats what this conf needs.  Great job to all the Buckeye coaches and cant wait till next season.

Big Ten head coaches already upset with Meyer

I'm gonna take a "wild" guess and say that the majority of people on here hating on Meyer and Ohio State are fans from some sucky lower tier football program right? Bielema and D'antonio are just crying cause they know their' one year of feeling they were on top of the Big Ten is over. Anyone who agrees with these 2 whiners are a bunch of whiny crybabies who wish their' sorry program knew what elite felt like. Waa waa waa! Go get a truck load full of tissues you little babies. No wonder why Ohio State, USC, Texas, Alabama, LSU, Oklahoma, and Oklahoma were among the select few who won a BCS national championship the past decade...alot of the rest of the teams are filled with little girls who only cry and make up wussy excuses for why you can't win, "oh poor me." Bielema needs to worry more about how to win a BCS game before that fat slob goes to the media about some "gentlemen's agreement." Now grow up and quit all of your' complaining

Now UF has a class coach that had as good a recuting class as mervin and he will run UF with class. You people at OSU enjoy the sorry azz POS.
Dang, dude!!!  Don't sugarcoat it, tell us how you REALLY feel..........(sarcasm)

I'm on the fence yet whether his ways will be better or worse, but I still liked Tress and think he was thrown under the bus for a misdemeanor that his bosses didn't want reported.

Oh, too bad.  The Big 10 schools thought they were on holiday while the fortunes of Ohio State were on the rocks.  But that period was short-lived.  What were they expecting when Meyer took the Ohio State job anyway?  This is probably only the beginning, but ask Meyer if he cares.  It's a real world out there and if the the Big 10 wants to play like the SEC, they will have to work like the SEC.  You won't see Saban or Miles takng anything for granted when it comes to recruits, for sure.  After all, they are trying to sell recruits on a chance on the national championship, not some country club.  More power to you, Meyer, if you upset all the OSU-haters.
