The drama surrounding conference realignment and the Big East conference seems to be revisited on a daily basis with a new wrinkle popping up by the hour. Earlier Wednesday,'s Brett McMurphy reported West Virginia and the conference are close to a settlement worth at least $20 million that would resolve all issues between both parties and allow the school to leave the league.

The Mountaineers are headed to the Big 12 and have insisted they are doing so for the 2012-13 season. The Big East has previously maintained that they will remain a member in the conference so that there will be eight football members this fall but that is something leadership is apparently wavering on.

The latest twist, according to McMurphy, is that both are working together on an agreement that would let West Virginia out of the league with both parties asking around to see if a future conference member could join this year instead of in 2013. Boise State has been a school that some are speculating could be option number one.

What happens if a school can't come to the Big East-to-West in time? Well, it appears the answer is to play two.

According to The Star-Ledger, one contingency for a seven-team league seems to be schools playing a home-and-home in the same season to make up for the lost game with West Virginia. The highly unusual move could have Rutgers and Syracuse playing twice, with the second game in Yankee Stadium. The Scarlet Knights are set to host the Orange this season if the Big East stays with eight schools.

The paper also mentions that Rutgers is close to finalizing a home-and-home deal with Arkansas, starting this fall. Rutgers would travel to Arkansas this year with the Razorbacks returning to Rutgers Stadium in 2013.

All things considered, if the worst case scenario is a Rutgers-Syracuse double-header this season, they should play the second game at a baseball stadium. At least that makes a little sense.

BigDaddy - actually Rutgers needs both to get to tweleve games.  Arkansas to replace TCU on their schedule and Syracuse (part deux) to replace WVU

I do not blame Rutgers for trying to get a home and home with Arkansas.  They have nothing to lose.  Everyone knows that Arkansas has a superior team, so Rutgers would be huge dogs.  If they lose, who cares?  Does anyone expect Rutgers to be in the running for a shot at the BCS title game?  If they win, it would be a major upset and could boost recruiting.  The Big Least is by far the worst AQ conference in the NCAA.  Now each school must find a game to fill in for the departed West Virginia.  Playing Arkansas is a much better idea than playing Syracuse TWICE in one season.

Yes, plenty...what if Syracuse, Pitt and West Va didn't leave?  TCU might have stayed as well.  You could say that those two leaving started this problem.  I still believe the proper solution was to have the 8 Football Schools (9 if you count TCU) separate from the 8 non-football schools and pick up Memphis, UCF, Houston, and SMU (or some combination) to form a new 12 team conference.

But who knows what happened behind closed doors.  Maybe that was suggested and rejected by the other Football Schools.

I'm glad to see that you buy into all this Big Least crap, hook line and sinker, like the Liberal Media and Obama, however, the ugliest abortion that you will face, is when, Rutgers not only makes the game competitive, but beats you're beloved Razorbacks and their across the board SEC overratedness Jersey style.  Forghetaboudit!

Is there anyone out there still knocking SU and Pitt for wanting to get out of this clusterfark of a conference?

I admire Rutgers for their faith in their abilities and their competitive instincts, but they are going to have a hard time holding Arkansas under 60 points.  It's funny how mid-level Big East teams turn out to be tomato cans when they play elite teams or even mid-level teams from elite conferences.  Those Arkansas-Rutgers games could turn out really ugly for Rutgers.
