Tim Beckman treats his players to porridge

If you were wondering what Illinois football would be like under new head coach Tim Beckman, it seems the program has taken on a bit of a "Goldilocks and The Three Bears" feel.

As part of Illinois' "All-In Banquet" this week, players who had followed Beckman's rules this semester were treated to a nice meal of steak and eggs. Those players who weren't showing up to all their classes ten minutes early or missed a rep during winter workouts were given porridge.

Some players complained the porridge were too hot, others said it was too cold, but Beckman felt it was just right.

"I think it was a little bit of an eye-opening experience for some of them," Beckman told the Chicago Tribune. "We ask our players to be above and beyond … and compete at a level that we think is a championship level."

Now, it's important to point out that Beckman holds himself to the same standard that he does his players. Since he missed a winter workout while attending an alumni event, he joined the Illini players who found themselves with a bowl of porridge placed in front of them. In all, 21 Illini players were treated to the steak and eggs.

Homers- Right on! Besides this team could use a hard liner coach. He may end up good or bad, but he wants to let them know who the boss is.

So...the two people who posted below me are bashing a coach for rewarding the players who showed up for classes and showed up for all their winter workouts? Let me make sure I understand this right, you two, who apparently are so much more wise than the rest of us, hate on a coach who holds his players accountable? Maybe you would only praise a coach who rewards players for commiting crimes off the field and never going to class right? I sure wish I was smart like you two and that I had it in me to hate coaches who are trying to keep players on the right track. The sad part for Illini fans is that only 21 qualified, if I were an Illini fan I would be hoping that next time the number is closer to 50 or 60 since that would mean guys are doing what it takes to get better both on and off the field.

Agreed. Beckman is an idiot and a bad hire, but typical for the Illini.

Cliched and condescending motivational tactics wear thin fast. He should have a very short tenure in Champaign.

The players still have those lasagna dinners that he made a point to mention in his hiring press conference to look forward to.

In a state with three FBS programs, the Illini are a FIRM #3.

This guy is an idiot. Another terrible hire that will keep the Illini in college football hell for the foreseeable future. I give this guy 2 years before no players want to play for him and no coaches want to be on his staff. It's sad really.
