Badgers interest in O'Brien likely to increase

In 2011 accepting a transfer quarterback from the ACC worked out well for Wisconsin when Russell Wilson helped lead the team to its second consecutive Rose Bowl and a victory in the first Big Ten Championship Game. Now it looks like the Badgers may be looking to take that route once again in 2012.

Former Maryland quarterback Danny O'Brien has said already that he'd consider Wisconsin when he transfers.

What is likely to increase Wisconsin's interest in O'Brien, aside from his ability, is that quarterback Jon Budmayr suffered a setback in his recovery from an elbow issue that has been bothering him last summer. An issue that puts Budmayr's future as a quarterback in serious doubt, and leaves the Badgers without a lot of depth at the quarterback position right now.

From the Wisconsin State Journal:
The situation is desperate enough that the Badgers are expected to make a strong push to land O’Brien, who announced he is transferring after the spring semester and has expressed interest in UW.

A UW source indicated the Badgers would like to get O’Brien, but Bielema declined comment when asked about the chance of bringing in an outside quarterback.
O'Brien graduates from Maryland this spring, so just like Russell Wilson, he won't have to sit out a year before being able to suit up with the Badgers. Which is important for Wisconsin as adding O'Brien would make them the clear favorite in the Big Ten's Leaders Division as Ohio State isn't eligible for postseason play in 2012.

How can you honestly say he isn't interested in "the education Wisconsin has to offer" when he will graduate from UM in less than 4 years? Clearly he is a motivated student.

So, please, stop acting like the buckeyes are bowl season killers when they gave the B1G a black eye in big games for almost a decade.

Dalemite, get back to me when Bucky wins its 6th BCS bowl game.  OSU is 6-3 in BCS bowls, so while the Buckeyes have taken a couple of black eyes, they've also done the Big Ten proud at a 2:1 clip.  Wisconsin is 2-2 in BCS bowls.  At this rate, Bucky won't match OSU's 6 wins until the year 2039.  But by then, OSU just might have another 15 BCS bowl wins.  The trend is not your friend.

Thanks for the laugh, there sure a lot of those types in my region. No wonder I don't go to Portland.
Regarding Wisky's QB search..........good luck.
See you in Corvallis soon enough.

what is with teams like lsu and wisconsin, thst csn put togethergood defensive teams and a good running game, but cannot draft and develop a decent qb. if you are a goo coach you put together the whole program.
Yeah and one could say if you're a really good QB you simply don't go to Wisconsin.  You go to the SEC, the ACC, Pac 10 and even if you do go to the Big 10 you go to Michigan or Ohio State.
Its a dog eat dog world out there and Bucky has to do anything it can do, within the rules, to stay competitive.
Listen, if this kid is looking to transfer then any other college team has a shot at him.  If your school isn't interested why is that Wiscy's problem?

Come to Wisconsin! The land of cheese and rent a QB. This rule to allow players to transfer to another university to take "graduate" courses at another school without sitting out is totally bogus. It isn't about graduate school education. It is about graduate school football. Just read what the Wisconsin State Journal wrote, "the Badgers are expected to make a strong PUSH to land O'Brien." Jake Bequette graduated from the University of Arkansas after his third year in school and because he redshirted one year finished his graduate degree this year. Bequette could have transferred, but stayed loyal to Arkansas and was rewarded with a top 5 finish and both an undergraduate and graduate degree. These are the kind of things the NCAA should sanction, not rent a player. O'Brien has absolutely no real interest in the education Wisconsin has to offer, only who the starting left tackle will be who will protect his blind side. The NCAA has a blind side on "graduate student transfers."

I agree with comments below.  I would be interesting to see what O'Brien can do without a supporting cast.  The mention of Michigan and Ohio State in an article ostensibly about Wisconsin is kind of just gratuitous.  So is O'Brie really going to go all the way with grad school or is he just looking for another year to play and extend numbers?

Badgers interest in O'Brien likely to increase

I can see the Badgers interest in getting a healthy QB that's ready to start every game.  I comprehend he can't stay at Maryland because one just doesn't get a Masters degree from the same university the bachelor degree is from. Is he serious about getting a Graduate degree and is hoping to use football as a scholarship to pay for it?   Or is he wanting another chance in college to get a call on NFL Draft Day?  If he's hoping for a call from the NFL some day, Bucky has probably gotten more QBs to the NFL than Vandy.  Some of the best jobs the world has to offer is being a journeyman backup NFL quarterback--make good money without taking the hits.

Nobody cares about Michigan, and it was a story written about Danny Obrien in a blog by Tom Fornelli......and he'll make a great QB and i'm sure Wisconsin will continue their winning ways with or without him.
