Browns QB Brandon Weeden vows to sign rookie contract before training camp

By Nate Ulrich Published: June 11, 2012

Browns quarterback Brandon Weeden reiterated this afternoon that he will sign his rookie contract before training camp starts in late July.

Weeden, the 22nd overall pick, and running back Trent Richardson, the third overall pick, are the only members of the Browns’ 2012 draft class who have yet to sign their rookie deals. Of course, they’re also the team’s only first-round selections this year.

“I’m ready to sign it,” Weeden told the Beacon Journal today during the 13th annual Cleveland Browns Foundation Golf Tournament at Firestone Country Club. “I’m not gonna miss any time. I’m gonna sign before [training] camp. It’s just nitpick stuff, but we’ll get it done. I’ll get it done.”

Richardson also believes his deal is close to being finalized.

“As far as the business side, I think it’s pretty much wrapped up,” Richardson told 92.3 The Fan today during the golf outing. “I think everything is pretty much done. There’s just some language in there that they have to get done. But as far as business-wise, it’s pretty much done.”

The new collective bargaining agreement has streamlined the process of drafted rookies signing with their teams. Still, Browns defensive tackle Phil Taylor, the 21st overall pick in 2011, missed the first four practices of training camp last year because his contract was not done.

Weeden has made it clear for some time now that he does not intend to follow suit.

“I’d have signed two weeks ago if I could have,” Weeden told reporters on May 22. “I’m not going to hold out. We just want what’s fair for me. My agent’s doing that. I haven’t even talked to (the Browns) about it. Whenever the day comes, I’ll sign the paper and go on about it.”

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- It's summertime, and the QB decisions are easy. So we're talkin'...

About the Browns preparing a quarterback ...

Realistically, do you believe the Browns would draft Brandon Weeden at No. 22 and then not prepare him to be the starting quarterback? Sure, they can talk about "competition," whatever that means. They have yet to anoint Weeden as a starter ... and in the name of Otto Graham, it's already the middle of June!

What are they waiting for?

I don't really care what they say in public, Weeden is their guy. Just watch the body language when coach Pat Shurmur discusses his new quarterback. He's like a teenager who just got his first new car -- and he thinks it's a Corvette.

I don't really worry much about Weeden not always taking snaps with the first team -- and it's June already! And these guys are in ... shorts! I trust the fact that when it comes to preparing quarterbacks, Shurmur and offensive coordinator Brad Childress know what to do.

When he was offensive coordinator in St. Louis, Shurmur put Sam Bradford in to start as a rookie. Childress was the head coach in Minnesota, the offensive coordinator in Philadelphia. He has handled more than a few quarterbacks.

You can be sure Mike Holmgren and General Manager Tom Heckert -- two veteran football men -- are not about to allow anything in practice to sidetrack Weeden. They are heavily invested in making sure their 28-year-old quarterback is ready, because they were strongly second-guessed nationally for drafting Weeden too high.

This is not 2009 when Eric Mangini was the coach and was picking between Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn. Mangini really wanted to select "None of the above." Since that wasn't an option, he counted practice and preseason game snaps to make sure it was "fair" and evenly divided.

Nor is it Romeo Crennel "flipping a coin" between Anderson and Charlie Frye to select a starter for the first 2007 preseason game.

Shurmur already said Weeden has received the most snaps, and it sure appears that way at the OTAs and in minicamp the last few weeks.

About Colt McCoy ...

Questions about whether McCoy is happy are misplaced. He knows Weeden is destined to start, unless the rookie from Oklahoma State is injured or forgets how to play. McCoy wants to start.

The real question about McCoy is this: Is he disruptive around the team? The answer is no. Has he practiced as he should, done his work in meetings and everything else that is expected of him? The answer is yes. That's according to the coaches that I checked with.

There are better and more successful quarterbacks than McCoy (6-14 as a starter) who were starting a year ago and now are backups: Jason Campbell (Chicago), Rex Grossman (Washington), Kyle Orton (Dallas) and Vince Young (Buffalo). All but Campbell (31-39) have winning records for their careers as starters. Campbell was 11-7 in the past two seasons.

So it's not as if McCoy would leave here and compete for a starting job somewhere else.

Happy or not, he'd be wise to make it work here as a backup and be ready in case Weeden is hurt or severely falters.

About the Browns ...

1. Fifth-round pick James-Michael Johnson has impressed at linebacker, which is important. With Scott Fujita likely suspended for the first three games -- and ending the past three seasons on injured reserve -- there is a need for depth at the position. Johnson (called "JMJ" by coaches and teammates) has looked good at middle linebacker and on the outside.

2. If Fujita is out, Kaluka Maiava joins D'Qwell Jackson and Chris Gocong in the starting lineup. Johnson becomes the top backup. The Browns also want him on special teams. They like how Johnson has been able to get the players in the right positions when filling in for Jackson at middle linebacker. It probably would not be wise to play Jackson 100 percent of the snaps, as they did last season because of a lack of depth.

3. It's early, but I hear undrafted rookie receiver Josh Cooper has been more impressive than Carlton Mitchell, who has spent most of the past two years on the inactive list. The Browns like Cooper's hands. He caught 139 passes from Weeden the past two years at Oklahoma State.

4. Seventh-rounder Brad Smelley of Alabama has looked good on special teams, and as a tight end/fullback. A player in his spot needs to show he can play a few positions and be important to special teams. Cooper also has shown that he can help in coverage units.

5. While the Browns are very upbeat about Mohamed Massaquoi, I have doubts because of how he's played the past two years and because he has had two concussions in that span. Greg Little looks strong. After that, the receiver positions should be wide open.

OTA open to media Tuesday so QBs (of course) were topic du jour.

BEREA — Pat Shurmur still did not announce his timetable on proclaiming a starting quarterback, but he did say he likes the idea of keeping three quarterbacks, as opposed to two.

“I like that model,” Shurmur said. I favor keeping three.”

Shurmur said about half of the NFL teams use just two quarterbacks.

Although he wouldn’t commit to the pecking order, Shurmur admitted that there is room for Brandon Weeden, Seneca Wallace and Colt McCoy.

“That’s still a very real possibility,” Shurmur said. “I could see the scenario with all three on the team.”

Thaddeus Lewis, who is almost an afterthought this season was the third quarterback last year. He is the fourth quarterback currently on the roster.

“We’ll help him to get some reps,” Shurmur said. “He does a good job.”

Shurmur said he’s not worried about any distractions with the quarterbacks.

“I have no reservations however it works out,” he said. “I think competition in this sport and all sports is very real.

“Every year someone is coming in to compete and take your spot.”

Wallace was a bit outspoken about being the backup last year and said he didn’t really look at himself as a mentor to McCoy.

“Seneca is very competitive,” Shurmur said. “When he was competing, he was helping without knowing it.

“I’m well aware of what he said at the end of the season,” Shurmur said. “I’m glad he’s here.”

Wallace said the situation in 2012 is much different.

“I’m a realist,” Wallace said. “(Weeden) was drafted in the first round for a reason and at some point, he’s going to play.

“This is my 10th year,” Wallace said. “I know the ropes. I’m not naïve. We all know there might be competition, but at the end of the day we all know who will play.

“Last year was a different situation,” Wallace said. “Me and Colt were competing (to start).”

Wallace was asked if he thought all three players could be on the team.

“Who knows? Probably not,” Wallace said.

He was asked if he would be content if he was the third quarterback, behind Weeden and McCoy.

“Not really,” Wallace said. “The third guy isn’t active on game day. Can you say if you see all three (of us) here?”

McCoy is taking a different approach. He said he has not thought about being the backup or number three.

“I have not gone there in my mind,” McCoy said. “I’m going out there to practice with my mindset as the starter.”

McCoy didn’t respond to a hypothetical question about asking to be traded or released if he isn’t the starter.

“My mindset is to play and do my best,” he said. “I’m doing all things as if I’m the starting quarterback, but there are only certain things I can control and that’s all I am doing.”

McCoy said he’s not looking back at what could’ve been had the Browns had a full off-season last year and more offensive weapons.

“You can’t make excuses for things that happened in the past,” McCoy said. “My mindset is to get better every day. I look ahead every day as a new day a new opportunity.

However, McCoy did concede that Weeden is most likely going to end up being the starter.

“I understand we are trying to get Brandon ready.”

Weeden said he still doesn’t consider himself the starter.

“I can’t say that,” Weeden said. “Even though I’m getting a lot of the reps with the one’s, nothing is set in stone until it’s official.”

Weeden said it doesn’t bother him going to training camp not knowing he is the starter.

“That will all happen and it will take care of itself,” Weeden said. “I’m not up there making those decisions.

“I feel like I’ve come a long way since Day One,” he said. “I’m starting to be more comfortable and excited for what we’re doing.”

Notebook

Benjamin Has Mixed Day: WR Travis Banjamin caught a deep ball down the sideline for a touchdown from QB Seneca Wallace and caught a couple of other nice passes, but he had trouble fielding punts later in practice.

“That was just at the end of practice and a little lack of focus,” he said.

Shurmur said he likes what he’s seen in the rookie from Miami.

“What he can do is catch the ball in the deep part of the field,” Shurmur said. “He’s a good route runner. He has quickness and can get separation.”

Benjamin knows he can out run most defenders, but is trying to develop techniques to get himself into the open.

“I come out every day to get better,” Benjamin said. “Knowing my speed, I can run past the defenders. I need to work on technique and little things.”

Benjamin admitted catching passes from QB Brandon Weeden is different from what he’s used to.

“(Weeden) has a little more touch than what I’m used to.”

When asked to elaborate he said,

“He has a strong arm and puts zip on the ball.”

Benjamin says he hopes to compete to break into the lineup as a rookie, either as a starter or on third down.

“I’m ready to come in and if the coaches call my number, I’ll be ready.”

Last Go Around: Tuesday was the first day of the last week of OTAs. The Browns will have sessions until Friday and then the structured part of the offseason will be over. Training camp is set to start in late July.

“We have three more structured team practices,” Shurmur said. “The rookies will have a couple more weeks and then the break.”

The rookies will conclude on June 27 and then have a rookie symposium in Canton until June 30.

The rest of the OTAs are not open to the media.

Missing In Action: K Phil Dawson was the only player not present for OTAs. OL Stanley Daniels (undisclosed), FB Eddie Williams (back) and DL Brian Schaefering (sports hernia) did not participate in drills.

On the NBA: QB Brandon Weeden, who hails from Oklahoma State said the Thunder will win the NBA Finals in six games. WR Travis Benjamin, from Miami, says it will be the Heat in six games.

Although he wouldn’t commit to the pecking order, Shurmur admitted that there is room for Brandon Weeden, Seneca Wallace and Colt McCoy.

Thought I heard a report today that Wallace wasn't interested in being the #3 QB.  Add that to his stance about not mentoring a younger QB last year and I say cut his arse and his $3,000,000 contract.

I think we all agree that McCoy and Wallace are the same Quarterback.  At least their performance last year looked very similar.  So, all things considered equal . . . if (when) Weeden is named the starter, why keep 2 of the same guy when one of the two clearly has his own self rated higher than the needs of the team?

Unless, of course your real name is Aaron Goldhammer and you just want to hate on McCoy some more.
