However, as we saw this past offseason, it doesn't take much to manipulate the salary cap and make room for these guys
So how long before it catches up to them or they suffer the hit of dead money?  Ben, Harrison, Timmons, Woodly, and Polamalu all received big contracts recently and all, if I recall, let the team move money around for this past season.  If I'm not mistaken, they moved around a cap hit of something like 15-20 million combined.  That money has to hit the cap at some point.  If it could just disappear forvever then every team would do it every year.

And it will, when the cap increases dramatically in 2014 from the new TV contracts and the Steelers still have all of their primary guys under contract.  Its not as if the Steelers have made a habit out of this until the last couple of years.  Its no coincidence that they started doing this right after the new TV contracts were announced.

Alot of teams will use the new found TV money to spend big money in the FA market, but that isn't the Steelers style.  They will keep their own.  The new money will drive the FA prices up, making it more expensive for them to sign their own, but they shouldn't feel the effects of that for a year or two, by which time these restructures will have settled out of the cap.

Not a big issue, really.

Browns president meets with media, talks QBs, his role, brown jerseys

BEREA—Mike Holmgren addressed the media before the Browns go into the slow time before training camp starts up in late July. Holmgren answered a variety of questions on a variety of topics. Here are some of the highlights.

Q: Do you plan on moving one of the quarterbacks before training camp?:

Holmgren: “Right now, the plan is not to. The first two years, we’ve had to go to the third quarterback because of injury. Something might happen as we approach training camp or go through camp.

“Between now and the start of the season, we’re going to be talking about a lot of things. I think we’ll be open to listening to a lot of things

Q: Have you seen enough to think Brandon Weeden can be the Browns franchise quarterback?:

Holmgren: “That term is a tough term. A franchise quarterback? Are we talking Tom Brady or Peyton Manning? He’s a rookie and if you pick a player in the first round you are saying something. In saying that, nothing is handed to him, but he is going to have to show us where he has to come in and play.”

Q: Do you think the starter should be named now?:

Holmgren: “Right now, it’s a healthy competition and at some point moving forward you have to name one. Pat was asked and he said ‘We’re not ready.’

“I don’t know and don’t think anyone can tell you, but when the time comes at some point you have to make the decision to get the guy ready for the regular season.”

Q: Could it be a potential problem to have all three quarterbacks still on the team at the start of the regular season?:

Holmgren: “I don’t think so. Whoever the third quarterback is, he gets his feathers ruffled a little bit because they’re all competitors and they’ve all played.

“You make decisions and there’s ways to do (avoid controversy). You should be able to avoid them.”

Q: You’ve said you are not a proponent of having a quarterback controversy. Have you changed your mind on that?:

Holmgren: “I have not had a change of heart. In our situation, Colt hasn’t played much, Seneca has played and Brandon is an older rookie. I’m more of the mindset to let it play out. When you draft a quarterback in the first round, you draft him to play, but when he does is the question.”

Q: With the possibility of Trent Richardson and Brandon Weeden starting as rookies, how unusual is that?:

Holmgren: “It is a unique situation but if you have to do it these two young men are two that can do it. Trent, as a runner, running is running and the learning curve isn’t as great. His challenge will be as a pass blocker and he can certainly handle it. The quarterback, to have a rookie quarterback, will be a challenge. He is going to see things he hasn’t seen. A good running game will certainly help the quarterback. You can certainly help young players with your game plan.”

Q: What has impressed you most about Weeden thus far?:

Holmgren: “He has the skill level to play and is able to pass the ball. He has the maturity level because of his age and after playing baseball, played football. He is as prepared to start as a rookie as any quarterback I’ve seen in a long time.”

Q: What do you see as his biggest adjustment?:

Holmgren: “His biggest adjustment is playing under center as he didn’t do that in college. He seems to be a fast learner and seems to have absorbed the play book pretty quickly.”

Q: What type of record do you expect this year?:

Holmgren: “I don’t want to make the same mistake to put a number on it. I expect us to take a good healthy jump this year (in record),” Holmgren said. “I know we’re a better team. We have a good off-season and we are more talented.”

Q: Do you see the receivers to make a bigger jump this year?:

Holmgren: “Besides Greg Little, who I think will take a big jump this year. He had too many dropped balls last year and I think he’s corrected those. I think (Mohamed) Massaquoi will make a big jump. I don’t think he will admit this but I think getting a (concussion) last year set him back. He’s healthy now and he can play. I like (Travis) Benjamin. You factor (Josh) Cribbs in there, as well.”

Q. Are the Browns for sale?:

Holmgren: “The Browns are not for sale. I talk to Randy all the time and I assume he would tell me. There’s no truth to that.”

Q: Do you think Colt McCoy has been fairly evaluated?:

Holmgren: “It was hard. He got knocked around and it wasn’t fair. What was fair is, he got to play and how did he handle it? Moving forward, I like Colt McCoy, I’ve made no secrets about that. If you’re asking him if it’s fair, I think he had a tough go of it, but life’s not fair always.”

Q: Would you like the Browns and Jim Brown to be on good terms once again?:

Holmgren : “Jim is one of my childhood heroes. He was a fabulous player and one of the first people I met when I came here. I would love to see Jim Brown come in and be part of the legends program. I can see why Jim would be upset at me because his role changed a bit. I would love to see Jim Brown be a part of (the Browns) and I would welcome him with open arms.”

Q: Are the brown jerseys coming back?:

Holmgren: “Yes they are. We will wear brown at home and split it with the white.”

Notebook

Holmgren More Accessible: Holmgren said he has decided to be more accessible this season in his third year with the Browns. He explained that he felt from his own experience that he felt the head coach should be the voice of the team.

“I feel it’s important to have one voice from the organization and tried to do that for a couple years,” Holmgren said. “Not that I’m hard-headed, but I’ve listened to some people around town and people have said they’ve liked to hear more from me and that’s what I’m going to try and do.

“I don’t know how that will manifest itself and I’ve talked to both Pat (Shurmur) and Tom (Heckert),” he said. “They have to know the President is on their side. They have to know that. The hard part at times, there will be a danger that he said this or they said that, but it’s important they know I have their back. The bottom line is I’m going to try and be more available.

“I have a great young coach and a great general manager, but in listening a little bit when I’m out and about that’s what we’re trying to do today.”

Holmgren was asked if some of the criticism he’s received for being on Seattle radio stations was unfair.

“I don’t know, “he said. “That might be part of the reason I decided to be more accessible.

“You have to have thick skin in this business, and when I heard that I wasn’t committed, that bothered me,” he said. “I’m committed here to the community. Kathy and I are like it here. My birthday is (Friday). I will be 64, but I have some more kicking to do. I’ve said this is my last great adventure, but I’m committed to get (the Browns) turned around.

“I feel bad about that and that is one of the reasons why I’ve shifted gears.”

Legends: Former Browns RB Ernie Green and DB Clarence Scott are to be inducted into the Cleveland Browns Legends program during the Alumni Weekend Sept. 22-23. Green played with the Browns from 1962-68, while Scott played from 1971-83.

Preseason Single Game Tickets on Sale: The Browns started selling single-game tickets for the 2012 preseason on Wednesday June 13. Single game tickets for the regular season will be available starting August 1. The two home preseason games are on Aug. 24 with the Eagles and Aug. 30 against the Bears.

Now that says alot. I knew that quote was going to become news...  Pretty powerful statement, though not really all that surprising IMO.   They were running that line on the NFL Channel update bar all night last night....

I wish Pat Shurmur would just name Weeden the starter and let him have all the reps he needs.  We all know who the QB is going to be.  Why draw it out like this....I understand he wants to keep everybody motivated, but BW doesn't strike me as the type that will dial it down a notch once given the nod.  just my take...

TD,

I think you obsess too much.   Wondering who is going to be the starting QB for the Browns this year is kinda like wondering who hooked up with Eve and fathered Cain and Abel.

I have to believe that he is getting all of the reps he needs -and- (just in case he gets injured down the road) the two probable backups are also getting some reps so at least they know what the Center's rump feels like.

You know full well that IF Shurmur gave 100% of the 1st team reps to Weeden and he got dinged up, when whoever the backup is came in and stunk the place up due to lack of reps then this fanbase would be crucifying Shurmur for not planning ahead and getting the backups some practice reps.

TD,

really lym? (rolling eyes) thats funny  .....Not that it matters, but i don't think you know me well enough to make that call.lol  I'm a football guy that likes to talk football year round.  I'm not wondering who the QB is going to be....I'm wondering why Shurmur doesn't just say what all of us allready know, and then divy up the reps accordingly....Continuing to imply that there is a real QB competition makes no sense to me....

I have to believe that he is getting all of the reps he needs -and- (just in case he gets injured down the road) the two probable backups are also getting some reps so at least they know what the Center's rump feels like.
Well thats just it.  He's not getting the normal starters reps....They are spreading them around between all 3 QB's, which is why I made that last post in the first place....   Not trying to be obsessive, just throwing out my two cents on the matter, which is what I thought these boards are for....

You know full well that IF Shurmur gave 100% of the 1st team reps to Weeden and he got dinged up, when whoever the backup is came in and stunk the place up due to lack of reps then this fanbase would be crucifying Shurmur for not planning ahead and getting the backups some practice reps.
Now thats super funny!  Don't worry Lym, if this were to happen, the back-up in Cleveland wouldn't suck because of "lack of reps", he would suck because he sucks...We all know this (except for Crex maybe, but I think even he is coming around)..I mean, you saw them play last year.......That's why we had to spend yet another first round draft pick on a QB in the first place.   Seneca Wallace has been in this offense his whole career.  He knows how this works...If Weeden goes down to injury, then we will be in big trouble.  Just like almost every other NFL team....Look no furthur than last years Colts or Bears for proof,  and Dallas the year before.....When the starting QB goes down, it usually means doom...Not just in Cleveland.

You are right about the fans though....But what can ya do?  Every team has a ton of idiot fans.  It's compounded in Cleveland because we have our share of idiots, plus a whole generation of bitter and jaded fans...   Obviously Shurmur has thick skin, I think he will be under fire no matter what if this team doesn't resemble an actual NFL team this year...He's gotta win games, and injuries are just considered part of football.....

All I'm sayin is, if it were me calling the shots, I wouldn't be spreading out the starters reps among three guys....Colt and Seneca even know who is going to be the man....The more reps Weeden gets, the more comfortable he'll feel in the offense.  The better rhythem he'll develope with the recievers etc.....

You can't play football worrying about an injury....

The 49ers announced they released long snapper Ryan Pontbriand Friday.

He was one of three snappers in camp, along with veteran Brian Jennings and Kyle Nelson.

According to 49ers beat writer Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, the apparently diabolical Pontbriand struggled during minicamp.

And because I trust Maiocco implicitly, and would never suspect him of any character assassination, we’ll leave it at that.

The Cleveland Browns realized soon after the NFL Draft that they want to get rid of quarterback Colt McCoy. They had no takers, so they decided to keep him, reports ESPNCleveland.com.

“When Weeden was drafted, I was told by an NFL source that the Browns didn’t want to ‘pile on’ McCoy and just release him,” says Tony Grossi of ESPNCleveland.com. “They were sensitive to the fact he had gotten such a raw deal already. They would like to find McCoy a new team, a new opportunity, to spare him the ignominy of being released. They will not demand much in a trade.”

Browns team president Mike Holmgren said that McCoy has indeed had a rough time recently.

“I think (Colt’s) a wonderful young man, and a good football player,” Holmgren said. “And if you are asking me to say was it fair last year? He had a tough go and he didn’t get as much help as I thought he was going to get. But heck, that’s football.”

fans of the 31 NFL teams that did not take home the Lombardi trophy, this is the time of the year reserved for optimism.

Long before training camp and preseason begin to reveal a team's flaws, most fans are filled with hope for the unknown and the belief that the franchise they support stands as good a chance as any to to make that coveted Super Bowl run.

This has especially been true for fans of the Cleveland Browns. Despite suffering through disappointing season after disappointing season since the Browns re-entered the league in 1999, Cleveland fans are quick to spend the offseason basking in the bliss of their team's potential.

Browns fans consistently await the regular season with the hope that this will finally be the year their team returns to relevance, only to have their hopes crushed by October

However, this offseason has provided perhaps more hope than any other since the Browns were reborn as an expansion team, and even those outside of Browns Backers nation have started to take notice.

After all, Cleveland just drafted a number of potentially productive offensive players to pair with a Top 5 defense from a season ago. The addition of former Alabama running back Trent Richardson and Oklahoma State signal-caller Brandon Weeden has given rise to the belief that the Browns will no longer struggle to score points as they have in years past.

While virtually no one is expecting Cleveland to take home a division title in 2012, there seems to be a very real sense that the Browns are a team on the rise. With many analysts anticipating a decline from AFC North heavyweights Baltimore and Pittsburgh (though "experts" seem to say this every offseason), the time for a divisional power shift could be fast approaching.

While the mere thought of finally becoming competitive in the rugged AFC North is pleasing to most Browns fans, former All-Pro defensive tackle and current NFL Network analyst Warren Sapp has set the bar even higher.

The way Sapp sees it, the Cleveland Browns are destined for a Super Bowl title—and soon.

During a recent episode of NFL Network's Total Access, the question of which team will be next to win its first Super Bowl was posed. Sapp was only too quick to give his answer.

"It's the Cleveland Browns," Sapp said.

"They have a quarterback now, they have a running back—in Richardson and Weeden—this is what you need to jump-start your franchise," Sapp went on to explain. "There's no more fumbling on the 1-yard line, there's no more 'Drive' for you to cry over. ... It's the Cleveland Browns. They'll be next."

A total of 14 franchises—including emerging teams like the Panthers, Lions, Texans and Bengals—have yet to take home a Super Bowl title. While many of these teams appear more likely to earn their first Lombardi trophy before Cleveland, Sapp at least has a point.
A lack of offensive consistency has been one of Cleveland's biggest problems in recent years, but the addition of Richardson and Weeden provides the potential to change that. Team president Mike Holmgren and general manager Tom Heckert appear to be building the team the right way through the draft, and as football fans are well aware, anything can happen in the NFL.
Of course, this could all just be wishful thinking from a former player who holds an obvious respect for this recently downtrodden franchise, but most Browns fans will take it.
After all, it sometimes seems that wishful thinking is all that Cleveland fans have to hold on to these days—though, hopefully, that will soon change.

Hey gtar...the draft was two months ago, the DUI was a week ago and most importantly, Justin Blackmon isn't onn the Browns...all that said, he will still end up the best receiver in this draft and ultimately a top ten receiver in the NFL. So what exactly was that about?

Sadly, this is turning into a distraction as much as Colt has tried for it not to. I hope they find a new home for him pror to training camp. Not really sure what to ask for..Are there ANY teams, where he would be a clear upgrade? Seems like a backup trade to me, so most likely no players to trade for...?What like a 6th/7th upgradeable round draft pick dependant on playing time?

to his benifit he has done and said all the right things . its the first time in his life that there  are doubts about his ability . he was pampered in HS . He was pampered at Texas under Mack Brown . i think thats why Mangini & Dabol lit him up when he first hit Cleveland just to toughen him up mentally . he is physical tough . he has proven that .

i was hoping that he would be the back up here .but if this soap opera is going to cause issues then send him packing . maybe to the Packers ? as they lost Flynn and i dont think they have a solid back up to Rogers .

By Vic Carucci, Senior Editor

Here are some final thoughts on the Browns as they wrap up their final week of organized team activity workouts:

> Brandon Weeden is the real deal. He throws the ball with exceptional accuracy, impressive velocity, and tremendous consistency. He makes good decisions with his throws most of the time. And the fact the former professional baseball pitcher is a 28-year-old NFL rookie becomes less important when you see the way he carries himself, showing the maturity and command of someone who already has been exposed to the life of a professional athlete.

> Trent Richardson has the look of a dynamic superstar. He moves with speed and explosiveness. No, he hasn’t had a collision in the hole with D’Qwell Jackson or any other NFL defender yet. But it’s hard to imagine that Richardson won’t deliver the elite skills as a runner, receiver, and blocker that he showed while helping Alabama win a pair of national championships.

> The incumbent receivers appear to have used their offseason for much more than relaxing and/or wallowing over being the target of most of the criticism for the Browns’ 4-12 finish last season. The group that dropped too many passes and made too few big plays showed up in top physical condition and has generally performed with a much greater sense of purpose and urgency. The practice performances haven’t been perfect, but they’ve clearly been better than what we saw for most of the 2011 campaign.

> New offensive coordinator Brad Childress has taken a necessary load off of the shoulders of Pat Shurmur, who wore the additional hat of OC as a rookie coach last year. Childress brings a sense of depth that one would expect from a man with 33 years of football coaching experience. Shurmur looks clearly more comfortable knowing that he has someone who not only shares his vision of the offense, resulting from their time together as assistants in Philadelphia, but is capable of running offensive staff meetings when Shurmur is pulled away by other duties that inevitably require the head coach’s attention. Players also speak glowingly of what Childress brings to the table.

> New senior offensive assistant coach Nolan Cromwell also has taken a load off of Shurmur’s shoulders. Cromwell earned plenty of Shurmur’s trust when Cromwell was the St. Louis Rams’ receivers coach in 2010, Shurmur’s final season as their offensive coordinator before becoming the Browns’ coach. Shurmur wisely has Cromwell working with receivers coach Mike Wilson to guide the Browns’ pass-catchers. In every drill, Cromwell can be seen and heard challenging the receivers to give maximum effort while paying ultra-close attention to details.

> Without contact, it’s hard to draw many conclusions about the defense, but it is easy to see the injection of pass-rushing talent from free-agent end Frostee Rucker. He has quick off the ball and consistently gets into the backfield in time to be disruptive. The absence of big Phil Taylor at defensive tackle is noticeable, of course, because, well, he’s big Phil Taylor. But rookie John Hughes looks to have the girth and strength to hold his own in the middle.

> T.J. Ward’s return from a foot injury has brought a higher degree of energy and play-making to the secondary. As the old saying goes, you sometimes don’t know how much you miss someone until they’re gone, and Ward was sorely missed for more than half of last season.

> Before a good portion of the Browns’ football operation shut down until training camp, team president Mike Holmgren met with the media to let them to know that they will be seeing more of him in the coming months. It is all part of Holmgren’s efforts to “try to be more available” to reporters. He said he was motivated to change the original approach of remaining in the background as much as possible in order to allow Shurmur and general manager Tom Heckert to be in the forefront of the organization by hearing questions about his long-term commitment to the Browns. Holmgren stressed that he is fully committed to the team and that he and his wife, Kathy, are committed to Cleveland. Holmgren is the same guy now that he was when he became club president in 2010 – the same driven man that led the Green Bay Packers to a Super Bowl championship during a coaching career that should land him in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It makes perfect sense for him to allow more people to see that guy as often as possible.

I'm not sure what happened to my pitching the last two weeks, but they got it going a little this week.....I'm not chalking up anything though!   I've seen Sunday leads turn into close losses on several occassions this year...

I mentioned during the draft that I'd be surprised if McCoy was on our roster this season...I'll stand by that...Not just because his relatives speak too much, but also because of his performance....Seneca has better command, and he should be the back-up.  People don't like him because he didn't want to help Colt take over, but that's silly IMO....Why would he?  He's a competitive football player that wants to play...We have coaches for that stuff.

Irish, as far as trades go, I think he'd have been long gone by now if there were any takers....Maybe the Browns were asking too much back in April, and the realization that he just isn't in demand is finally sinking in...I really can't see why Green Bay would want him.  His first NFL experience came against them in pre-season a couple years ago, and he was absolutely dreadfull....He showed in that game exactly what he is,  a fierce competitor who has the heart and mind, but just doesn't have the arm to be a legit NFL QB....

That's true Jake....I just think it is becoming a distraction that we don't need.   I like Colt McCoy, but he's too underwhelming of a player to keep him around while his family continues to insult the franchise.  You just know that Case McCoy's remarks are not going to sit well with a lot of Colt's teammates...It just seems like a headache we don't need.   Just because he's affordable, that is no reason to keep him on the roster.....He's a replaceable player.

Chris Spielman's tribute to his wife is also a tribute to fathers and family: Terry Pluto

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- When Chris Spielman decided to write a book, he wanted to pay tribute to his wife, Stefanie, who died of cancer in 2009. But the former Ohio State star and Pro Bowl linebacker did far more than that. His book is an encouraging word to fathers.

"One of the hardest parts of Stef getting sick was wondering if I could do a good job as a dad to our four kids," Spielman told me this week.

Dads have doubts. No matter how strong they may seem at work, or even at home. Dads wonder if they are measuring up. They hate it when someone in their family is hurting, and they can't do anything about it.

"If I couldn't fix it immediately, I out-studied it, out-lifted it, out-ran it, but I had no control over [cancer]," wrote Spielman in his new book, "That's Why I'm Here

I had a great week Bluez, thanks in large part to Johnny Cueto,  but I still haven't put you away yet!  You've got a helluva team, I mean you're over 300 for the week anyway. Stop trying to get me to jinx myself! lol!

Honestly, I think I have a team that can compete in this league, but I'd sure like to see my top picks (Dustin Pedroia, Adrian Gonzalez and Justin Upton) start to produce.  I could be really dangerous if those guys ever get it going.....But it's been alot of fun so far, and it's kept me much more interested in MLB outside of Cleveland this year...Hopefully i'll get a spot next year because I really enjoy the set-up....

Thanks.

Doesn't Chase McCoy have his own team to try and run?  I don't believe it is set in stone that he is going to start all season.  I don't know where these guys get this idea that they are the greatest college QBs since John Elway.  It must be a Texas thing. Colt was very good at UT, but he really needs a wake-up call.  I guess he is too young to have any idea of the history of great college quarterbacks that didn't make thhe transition to the pros well.  The line is long and much more distinguished than anything he has done in his history I'll tell you that much.  He needs to get the hell over himself and a grip while he is at it.
He's not in Kansas anymore as Dorothy would say.  He is a guy on a professional roster. This is his third year in the league, and he should be thanking God that he touched the field his first two years.  THe fact that they were at anytime willing to put the franchise's future in his hands should be enough reason to tell his family to "Shut the Hell Up" as LeBron put it.  No offense intended to Ms. Gloria James btw.  Colt is a full-grown man and last I checked Mr. Texases didn't need other men taking up for them, or so we are always told.  Which btw I never believed.  I thought he was this rough and tumble kid that was gritty.
I thought things like this were supposed to roll of his father's and brother's backs.  It's not like the Browns came out and said he'd never play for Cleveland again or in any other way "disrespected" his legacy.  Guess what - he has no legacy in the NFL.  If he is as good as they love to tell everybody else he is, then he should be able ot beat out Weedon, a rookie, no?  He damn sure shouldn't have any competition with Seneca Wallace, right?  But yet here we are talking about him possibly being third string.  Give me a (sic) break.  Don't tell me how great you are cause I don't want to hear it from him or anybody else.  Pretend I'm from Missouri and Show Me!

from the PD.....

First off, I find it difficult to have a QB competition, when the QB best suited to win it, and lead the team, isn't involved, or barely mentioned? What has McCoy done in 21 starts, to even warrant being considered, let alone mentioned in a discussion for Browns QB? The competition he appears to be involved in now, is no different than the one he was a part of last year, only he's in the position Wallace was in, his fate already having been determined. I don't recall anyone emphasizing fairness last year, especially on behalf of Wallace. QB controversies only occur, when the best QB isn't playing. The best QB wasn't playing last year, and isn't getting an opportunity to compete this year.
I'm not sure what anyone else has seen, but not only did McCoy not win the job last year (it was given to him), he did absolutely nothing to stay on the field. While I get the concept of being able to finish what you start, but what was most important, his evaluation, and development, or what was best for the team, as a whole. He was allowed to stay on the field, through poor play, and adversity, with an opportunity to make adjustments, find his way, and he just never did. I think starting Weeden is a mistake, and makes just as much sense, as it did in starting McCoy last year. This isn't like Cincinnati, or Carolina last year, where Dalton, and Newton, were in fact, the best QB's in camp. McCoy was no different last year, than how he ended the season in 2010.
Seneca Wallace is entering his 10th year, and he really doesn't have a lot of mileage on him, I can't recall him ever sustaining a serious injury. He knows the offense better than anyone, and is best suited to transition the team into. said new offense. He's had 7 starts since coming here, and had a realistic opportunity to win all 7. Opportunity is what brought Wallace to Cleveland, and yet opportunity is the one thing, he hasn't gotten.
In 2010 Wallace was clearly the Browns most effective, efficient, and productive QB. He looked to be the better QB in camp, which should have been expected, because he had the most knowledge, and experience in the WCO that Holmgren wanted installed. Dellhomme was brought in, and handed the job, and after the Tampa Bay game, shouldn't have taken another snap. Tampa Bay was a team Delhomme had experience opposing from his days in Carolina, he was unproductive, shut out in the 2nd half, and nothing more needed be shown.
Wallace made his first start vs Kansas City, was limited by an offense that was designed to fit the strengths of Delhomme, led the Browns to a 14-10 halftime lead, led 14-13 entering the 4th quarter, as Mangini appeared to be playing to protect the lead, not extend it, and the Browns lose 16-14. Then Baltimore, in which Wallace led the team to a 17-14 lead in the 4th quarter, only for Eric Wright to give up TD #3 to Anquan Boldin (defensive failure to make the Wright adjustment), and Browns lose 24-17. Wallace then defeats Cincinnati 23-20, more importantly, you could see the team responding to him in the huddle, and displaying more inspired play on both sides of the ball. Atlanta was next, as Wallace was looking his best, you could see his confidence, and more importantly the confidence of is teammates in him. He was 11-15 139 yards 1 TD, clearly outplaying Matt Ryan, in guiding the Browns to a 7-6 lead before getting hurt, right before the half. Delhomme finishes the game, 2 interceptions later, the Browns fall 20-10, and yet most have tagged Wallace with the loss? Even starting pitchers escape losses when bullpens blow leads.
Clearly Wallace had separated himself from Delhomme and shown who the better QB was for this team. How did he not give the team the best chance to win? What changed? McCoy, until Holmgren came out, said he would make the team, red-shirting, while most didn't think he'd make the roster. He appeared to look that bad at times. I had no problem with McCoy playing when his number was called, he was the #3 guy, prepared to play, and his number was up. I viewed it as down right disrespectful to him, and the work he put in, to even consider bringing in a QB off the street, and play them in front of him. I thought he held up well vs Pittsburgh, and managed the games well in wins over New Orleans, and New England, but nothing to warrant him being the starter in 2011.
The way he closed in losses to Baltimore, and Pittsburgh, it was clear he had a long way to go, but the time on the field was beneficial. What 2010 confirmed, was Wallace should have been the teams starting QB, should be the starter in 2011, Delhomme shouldn't have been in Cleveland, and McCoy was worth developing, as the teams #2.
McCoy in being handed the starting QB job in 2011, being allowed to stay on the field through his poor play, had created more questions, than answers as most expected. McCoy has had 21 starts, and has showed no improvement. , or progression. You say he's shown the ability to lead, lead who, what, and where? He hasn't elevated a single person around him, other than put Dawson in position to attempt long field goals, resulting in his being franchise tagged. He has yet to win a division game, has looked awful vs Pittsburgh and Baltimore, who's on the schedule twice a year, and not much better in the 2nd halves of both Cincinnati games last year. He may have youth on his side, but he just hasn't been very good. What you want from your backup QB, is a person who has the ability to lead, maintains order, prepares well, and gives you an opportunity to win. At this point and time, that just isn't McCoy.
Wallace has been labeled unfairly as not being a team guy, or a cancer in the locker-room, and yet that's never been spoken within the locker-room, only by those on the outside. A perception, and assumption that's been media generated. Clearly the team has responded differently with Wallace, than with McCoy, and it hasn't been hard to see. McCoy has obvious limitations, which has inhibited those around him. All I've ever heard, on behalf of McCoy are excuses. If McCoy fails to make the final roster, he'll just be a casualty of his own poor play. Holmgren went as far as making references to the lack of a running game, his failures, short comings, and disappointments, were always the fault of someone else.
As a QB, clearly you could see that McCoy operated primarily from his strong side, basically cutting his options in half, opposing defenses pressed outside, taking away short passes, bringing pressure to his strong side, thus taking away run lanes in the process. The concept, was to speed up the thought process of a QB, that was slow in his reads, and progressions, teams didn't attack him back side, they came in his face. So whatever it is you've seen differently, by all means share with me.
I don't think ego has had anything to do with it, as a competitor its hard to watch, knowing that you're the better guy. What it does more than anything, is split the locker-room, other players know who should be playing, and they respect those that work hard, and earn it. Wallace wasn't brought here to mentor. For me, mentoring is for players who are at the point in their careers, when they provide (contribute) more off the field, than on it. They're more like coaches, who just happen to dress out on game days, just not quite to the point of team issued polo's. It's my opinion, McCoy would have gained more by sitting, watching, and learning, rushing that process, led to addressing the position with the #22 pick, The drafting of a QB, especially in the first round, ends the McCoy development project, what's he going to do, mentor?
He struggled in the offense himself, so how can he help others develop an understanding of it? At this point, what's gained, or what's the upside, by having him here? To have this farce of a "competition" between he and Weeden proves exactly what? That Weeden earned the job by beating out McCoy, which really isn't saying much. What would be worse, almost disastrous, is McCoy actually being better. Browns brass has said on more than one occasion, they expect Weeden to be "the Guy"
Simply put, Weeden is a 29 year old rookie, Wallace is a 9 year veteran, with the most experience, and understanding in the offense, with a TD/INT ratio of 31/18. He also has the ability to extend plays, as well as make throws to both sides of the field. It's not by accident that Cribbs, and Little had their best games with Wallace at QB. Hillis also had his best game as well. If Weeden doesn't come in and make an immediate impact, the Browns will be once again be faced with addressing the position. No reason too repeat the mistakes of last season. Same courses of actions, don't bring about different results. This will be year 3 for Holmgren, and the time for results, and accountability is now.

I thought that was an interesting take, and I agree with much of it....Not the part about starting Seneca over your #1 draft pick though.   Let's not get crazy...He probably is better suited to start as of right now, but that's just not how it works.  He knows that....It's an intriguing situation in Cleveland because Weeden is not only a #1 draft pick, but he's 28 years old....Weeden is the big investment, he's going to play...

Seneca Wallace is what he is....A solid back-up NFL QB.

IMO he should be our #2....
